Made up a little bit for the aborted Cherry Hill effort.

We tried to wait out the heat. It was cool by our house, but got muggier near the lake.

Seemed to spin faster. Maybe I'm finally getting in shape a little. Daybreak #8

Walking 21:00 [1] 1.3 mi (16:09 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Ghost Blue

Tried to do Cherry Hill after the parent meeting. A bust. Dusk rolled in, and dear wife was having trouble seeing, and nearly face planted on a tree root.

They have done a wonderful job opening up the middle section with whatever they are cutting down all that vicious green with. It'll be awesome for sprint woods o if they keep at it!

slept:8.0 (rest day)

Woo hoo! Night O permit approved. They do want us out by 8 pm on the nose, so I'm thinking with sunset at 5:15, that maybe a 5:45 - 7:30 format would work. Hopefully 105 minutes will satisfy cravings. Then 30 minutes to kick everyone out, and I can pick up flags in the morning, since I have the last meet of the season...which also means that with the equipment I have free reign over any winter activities....muah ah ah! (Oleg, Igor...ski o if you want! Or maybe a sno-gaine at Island Lake?)

I think the course will be clearable, since it won't be longer than what Voit did in 90 minutes flat for the summer, but maybe darkness will add 15 minutes of difficulty?

Canoeing 1:45:00 [1] 7.25 mi (14:29 / mi)
shoes: Pirate Canoe

Jeff bailed, and I was too lazy to take the canoe off the truck. Cooper was up for a paddle, so I jumped in the front and we bombed up Kent Lake to the bridge at the north end, then back to Island Lake. Gorgeous night for it! Some wind made for chop in the way out that was a lot of fun; the way back featured amazing hues in the water, trees, and sky as the sun started heading down.

ahr:149 max:168 shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

Mostly gravel trip out to Hudson Mills Metropark to hand deliver the night o permit application. I forgot what a rollercoaster Walsh is!
8 AM

Biking (Mix) 57:49 intensity: (2:55 @0) + (15:42 @1) + (23:56 @2) + (13:27 @3) + (1:49 @4) 15.07 mi (15.6 mph) +77m
ahr:144 max:170 shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

Strawberry Lake is a fine backroad, until it gets paved. Too much traffic, not enough paved shoulder and I don't like the shoulders for paved roads. One wrong turn off M36 since I was doing the Google route from memory, but I recovered. At least M36 has nice shoulders, then back to dirt roads up to Winans Lake.

Funny - I got confused and though I had just 45 minutes to do the trip to Huron Meadows, but really I had an extra hour, which was good as I would've been a few minutes late. Instead I was able to relax and have a cookie in the club house.

11 AM

Orienteering (Instructing) 1:29:24 intensity: (1:28:17 @0) + (55 @1) + (12 @2) * 2.36 mi (37:51 / mi) +23m 36:44 / mi
ahr:99 max:141 spiked:9/9c shoes: Salomon XT Wings

I missed the first...0.75 mile / 30 minutes? Oh well.

Very nice people for my 2nd "welcome to orienteering" lesson of the summer. The schedule worked out that I had a guy and a woman and her friend just do it at the same time...and they knew each other! Small world. They seemed to get the hang of it pretty well, and seemed like really cool laid back people. Perfect orienteering candidates. Hopefully I will see them at the fall meets. Great day to be in the shady woods. The meadows were a bit warm! We just worked most of the points north of Hammel. Huron Meadows is much, much easier to instruct at than the permanent course at Pontiac Lake - sure, the HM map has a bunch of outdated trails (since corrected, but not on the permanent course map), but PLRA has more changed vegetation and worse visibility.

Swamps looked very crossable, although I let them veto the one crossing because one of their shoes was just to nice and white.

1 PM

Biking (Road Bike) 34:08 intensity: (37 @0) + (3:01 @1) + (18:05 @2) + (11:31 @3) + (54 @4) 8.03 mi (14.1 mph) +38m
ahr:148 max:171 shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

OMG, this was awful. The 1:45 of morning biking, plus two hours of nav instructing (in the sun and noon heat), plus a decided lack of lunch really took its toll. In my original plan, o instruction was done at noon, but one of the groups had been running behind so we were 45 minutes late getting rolling, but they seemed to be enjoying the woods so we hit a lot of points. I was really, really dragging, even though my HR was higher than target. This route has no relief from the sun, the roads are crappy and have too much traffic, so it's as much mental as physical.

I could use a nap!
9 PM

Canoeing 2:28:01 [0] 6.86 mi (21:35 / mi) +55m 21:03 / mi
ahr:88 max:118 shoes: Pirate Canoe

Jeff said, "If you asked me a year ago if I would be paddling a canoe at 11 o'clock at night, I'd say 'no way'". And here he suggested it! We met up at the Lee Road Park and Ride, then took the truck to McCabe and put into the Huron. It's a very nice put in, all things considered.

Highlights: Scaring the crap out of myself when we woke up a giant carp...by hitting it with the boat. A fish or frog darn near jumped in the boat. Some animal swimming out into the river, seeing us and then turning right back around.

Holy deadfall! This was an obstacle course! At one point, I had to lay flat back, and the tree we went under rubbed the life vest. It was easier to negotiate the obstacles on the way up, but we made a lot better time on the way down.

I woke intending to do more, but it took a considerable amount of time to find my glasses, which turned out to have fallen onto the floor.

Some paved, some gravel, and I got my sewer bill dropped off at the township office.

Bike computer measured 14.42, so it should be just a small tweak to match it up it and be ready for the Rage.

It was nice to finally get in a proper workout finally. The crisp cool air, the mysterious eyeballs off the side of the road, the mist near Brighton Rec....

Mostly paved, but with a good chunk of gravel during the loop around half of Brighton Rec, with a mile or two of Murray Lake singletrack, Cooper's Bauer-to-Maltby shortcut, some dirt road past Huron Meadows, then paved to bring it home.

I accomplished my primary objective - drop off the frog food and filters at the frog owner's home. We forgot on Saturday at the b-day party.

Note

I originally intended to add a bike ride, but Dog #1 got me up at 5 am and that was just too much.

Then, while I was in the woods, my new boss called, so I figured it was some quick question - no, I had to check out a car for work. So I had to drive from fracking Pontiac to Taylor. On the way, my old boss called and said maybe my calibration was wrong. I got there, checked out the car, and it's not my fault. Hardware guys have issues. Were hardware guys on site, wasting away a Saturday? NOOOOOOOOOOooooooo. :-P

Instructing at PLRA from the beach up through some yellows. Maybe I'm off my game, but those yellows seem way to hard compared to the course guidelines. Maybe it's the vegetation. There's crawl-on-your-knees in white. Note to self: Scout the damn posts beforehand! On the upside, I was able to let them have at it without any unintentional leading.

This couple is looking to set up a program with some scouts, so that should be pretty cool, especially if they are able to join some SMOC meets. I think they are looking at Highland or PLRA since they are out that way.

~75% gravel, 35 psi.

This was originally scheduled for Saturday, but I slept in that day. So I did it on Sunday. Out the door around 4:45 am in order to make it to Big Rapids and back before waffles. Some highlights:

I saw a horse on the road. Not with a person, just a horse. It ran off into someone's yard.

Still fearful of skunks, I got nervous seeing seven sets of eyes on the trail, but then it was just six kittens and a mother.

I almost wiped out in some sand.

Check out the perfect splits - 1:55 to the park, five minute snack break, and 1:55 back to the barn.

Just before getting back, I saw a crop duster. I am being dead serious when I say he was no more than 30' off the ground on some passes. I'm not sure how he didn't hit powerlines or trees. Remind me never to ride along with a crop duster.

I only saw three other trail users in the ~3 hours on the White Pine trail - a walker, a runner, and an Amish buggy full of Amish.

Great ride, although I can feel some soreness in my quads already today.

I was curious what I could do for a reasonably flat mile. So I did the 2.5 mile warmup (probably too long!) and then tried to shoot for 6:00/mile, but that was not happening. Somewhat depressing, since I used to be able to split this 6:50 in a 5k. :( At least I know what the problem is, I think. I immediately went inside and reread the Hadd training thread, and will try the run slow to go fast heart rate training method. Hopefully it works!

The SMOC Equipment Retrieval Team has had its first failure. I heard that there was an abandoned flag near my #2 red control from the May meet.

Knowing some crap was out there, I geared up with a thick shirt, tights, gaiters, and floppy hat + bug mask. This impeded the running a bit. The bugs weren't out so I could've foregone the net. Gaiters were a good choice given some of the prickery bits.

I tried to sweep back and forth, but I couldn't find it. I may try again in the winter, since one of potential control sites is currently completely grown over; also, the distinct tree looks like it fell. So maybe it's there, but just not visible in these conditions.

After I got back to my truck at the fishing parking lot for Hudson Mills, I wandered down to the river and crossed it, then crossed back and hiked up a little bit.

Canoeing 2:00:39 [0] 5.84 mi (20:39 / mi) +17m 20:28 / mi

Paddler at work suggested a group outing, which sounded cool but given this phase of Rage prep, it was way way way too timid in pace. I hardly put the blade in the water and we were leaving our more leisurely kayakers behind. Nothing wrong with that approach to paddling, I just felt a bit pent up.

The Huron is definitely different here. Water is murky, river is wider, and has a bit more kick in the current. Nothing unbearable for novices, but you can feel it a bit.

We will have to go back sometime and go hard so we can make it up to the rapids before turning around, just to see what they look like (the white spot on the Google satellite photo upstream ~3 miles from our turnaround ).

Jeff's steering, already better than mine from Day 1, improves with each outing.

This is the Lakeland rail trail. Google shows it starting up on a curve on M36, but slightly before 6 am, I couldn't find the trail head.

http://goo.gl/maps/LxsuT

So I knew I could probably find it in Hamburg proper, so I continued up M36 and then veered off where M36 goes north by a gas station. There, I did find it easily, and that would be my home for the next many miles.

The first bit is paved, so other than slowing for cross streets, it's hammer time. Shortly after a sweet underpass of M36 by Cap'n Frosties (even lit!), it turns to dirt, but it is pretty smooth and has fun rolling whoops.

Then at some point, and for awhile, it's crushed stone, but the top is so fine that it feels like riding in 1/4" - 1/2" of sand, killing your momentum. And whatever they mow with leaves tiny chatter bumps, so with some tenderness from Friday's antics, that was very mentally challenging.

I made it Stockbridge at the end of the trail - a marathon in less time than the world record...but not by much!

Then it started to drizzle, and even rained pretty well, then drizzle.

On my way back, I was determined to see if it did come out as Google suggested, so I took the trail past where I started on it. The pavement ends, gravel = no problem. The gravel ended...problem. It was massively bike whacking. I was on my knees for a decent portion of that. It does come out where Google says, but is unridable and wouldn't even be nice hiking. Unless it was trimmed, then it would be fantastic - the base is smooth. I wonder if it extending it is in the plans.

Talk about a brilliant way to start the day! Up before dawn, bike lights charged and ready, I made my way up to the Green Oak entrance to Island Lake, rode most of Blue, bailed out via the Badlands to McCabe, and then took it home. Nice weather, little traffic, just fantastic....UNTIL....

I pulled into my garage, went to put the bike against the wall, and noticed my seat bag was open. No no no no

In a panic, I jumped in the Escape and retraced my route to ILRA. I didn't see anything. :(

I debated whether or not I should head back and grab my bike, as that would be much faster to loop the single track, but then I thought maybe walking would make it easier to see. I thought about jogging, and did at the start, but then remember that five miles last night + more this morning = not a great idea, so I tried to speed hike it.

I hoped my loot was by the downed tree, where I laid the bike down. No.

I was hopeful with every drop and bouncy climb. Nope.

Finally, after 80 minutes of hiking, by God's grace I saw a tire lever. A few dozen meters later, my phone. A few dozen meters later, my multi tool. Hooray!

There is probably still a lever and maybe some tire patches out there, but I was already horribly late for work so I jumped out to the road and tried to speed hike back. I missed the shortcut, but it doesn't matter all that much. I must've looked rough, as a couple of biking ladies asked if I was okay. Yes, quite relieved actually, but pretty miserable from being bit dozens of times by deer flies. They were pretty bad at walking speeds.

I finally had a chance to run around Bird Hills, which would make for some sweet orienteering, with the epic ravine, boulders, and reentrants. And no wonder Al can stay in good orienteering shape. They are nice rooty trails too, with some elevation change here and there.

Too bad that would either trample the native plants, or spread invasives, I forget which.

I seemed to get around okay for a bit, no idea if I did a good route, and then I got very turned around near the end, then the funny part was I asked a couple for directions, and the guy laughed since I was by then about three minutes from my target.

Somewhat warm. And I only really can jog okay for 20 minutes, can muck through until about 40, and by the end I was pretty wiped.

Note
(rest day)

I am no longer interested in being fat. I see the challenge for the next few weeks being that wife and daughter don't get up at 5 am, so they are not ready for dinner at 5 pm. It's so easy to knock back a mega snack then. Need moar discipline.
