Could sleep all day. Certainly not because of exercise. I remember the good old days a couple years ago when five was good enough to function.

Tough weekend ahead - pretty busy and my parents have snacks.

It will be no surprise to anyone that today's performance review at work went something like:

+ technical excellence
- communication
- leadership

Sounds like one of my o meets. I'm happy to scout points for dozens of hours and make countless course revisions while conforming to the guidelines, and I find all that fun. Less so the permits!
7 PM

Erg rowing 44:00 [1]

One of these days I'll figure out the little screen so I can get some fictional distance number.

Wednesday Jan 23, 2013 #

Note
slept:8.5 weight:197lbs

30 + 15 + 15 push ups.

Temptation to cheat on food has been higher lately. Not sure if some sort of depressive coping because work hasn't been great, or depressed about leg or what. Time to buckle down so I won't put as much load on the old leg when I start back up.
7 PM

Erg rowing 45:00 [1]

More Survivor season III.

slept:7.0 weight:198.2lbs shoes: INOV8 285

AR training course (except #1) with Barbara. She made some interesting route choices, so it kept me on my toes as far relocating. :-) We also played with routes to a couple points, notably using the side hill from 7-8. It started off flat, but then became sloped. We saved elevation, but the footing was not great. Hiking it was probably okay, but if you were running, the elevation cost might be worth it. An interesting experiment. Also she chose a nicer line to #7 - the reentrant has a walking path, so it leads right down to the flag. I came over the top which was tougher walking when I set it.

A single pair of wool socks in my INOV8s was not adequate! If I can't find my sealskins before Cabin Fever, I may spring for a Goretex pair at REI or something. :|

Thanks to whomever propped up #4 as the branches must have broken. I retied it.

Sunday Jan 20, 2013 #

Note
slept:6.0 weight:199.2lbs

100 push ups over the course of a looong program. I suspect the vat of popcorn I ate during Skyfall explains the weight bump.

8 PM

Erg rowing 45:00 [1]

Started Survivor season 3. My wife and I haven't seen it. She uses the treadmill whilst I row.

My attempt at eight hours of sleep was foiled by pup #1.

Friday Jan 18, 2013 #

Note
slept:8.0 weight:197.8lbs

Stayed up a little to watch Lance.
2 PM

Walking 20:00 [0] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Work was frustrating so I walked to the other building rather than drive.

Thursday Jan 17, 2013 #

Note
slept:7.0 weight:198.4lbs

Discomfort is down. I note the right calf is significantly tighter than the left. Hopefully I can loosen that bugger up.
5 PM

Note

Well the Rocket is in pieces. I can either salt up the Dragon or spring for a trainer or just row a lot.

Wednesday Jan 16, 2013 #

Note
slept:9.0 weight:197lbs

Let this serve as a reminder to myself on the efficacy of calorie counting.

I have lost more weight in ten days of counting than I did without counting during 12 weeks of 24-hour race training where my volume was easily 50% higher.
10 PM

Biking 53:23 intensity: (6:24 @0) + (13:36 @1) + (21:23 @2) + (12:00 @3) 8.14 mi (9.1 mph) +3m
ahr:141 max:163 shoes: Old Red Schwinn Rocket

A failed experiment. I thought maybe night riding would be the solution to all of life's problems, but it was not. I was, for one, exhausted. Adding to the lack of fun was a bike that refused to roll. I stopped 1/3 of the way into the planned route to see if I could diagnose it - nope, the back wheel just doesn't spin free. It's like going up a hill, everywhere. It may be great exercise, but it is not as fun as bombing around on backgrounds at 15 mph like last fall.

In conclusion I should suck it up and starting getting my lazy bum up in the morning, and also figure out why the wheel is dead.

Tuesday Jan 15, 2013 #

Note
slept:8.0 weight:198.4lbs

Time to consider late night exercise, as I seem to not be getting up early.

On a brighter note....

100 push ups completed over the course of the day.

I think I under ate a little yesterday, as I am pretty hungry today. I may have binged slightly. :(

Dear wife wanted to hike, and I figured the main path would be semi-dry. It was passable. Most of the side trails on this half of the park were okay because of leaves.

This also includes two passes through the zig zag to see how it compares to the map.

I should do some Cabin Fever hill work out here. I scouted some nice spots.

Peach Mountain Trail Update and Boulder Survey Phase #1.

I walked the new trail near the usual start, forward and backward, so Igor can add it. Later I also double walked the junction that is out of date after some brush has people routing around it.

Boulder surveying was not as simple as it sounds. I took a bunch of pictures for the Boulder Review Committee. I also couldn't even find a couple of them. I am curious how close I was. Then, you measure some .3 m boulders that are on the map, turn a corner, and see three .3 m boulders that aren't on the map. :| Well now what do you do with that!

Wife was talking about a hike tomorrow - maybe we can do the main trail at Peach Mountain and that would give a gps track to tweak the one wonky trail bend on the main drag.

Kensington has two paddling events already:

7/27, Stand up paddleboarding
8/4, Canoe race

So maybe an end of August time frame would be best for canoe o, like 8/24. Kensington has a mud run or something on 8/25, but maybe that would still work. It's a week after Wilderness Traverse and not Labor Day. Something to work towards anyway.

Note
(injured)

Leg seems to hurt the most just as you put it up on a stair and go to push off. I have a hunch I could run on it without discomfort. It seems to be focused for a strain, but not painful enough to be cracked. :\

Erg rowing 43:00 [1]

Ah, basement. You are so warm, you have television, you don't require me to run around the house finding enough clean layers....

Weights 10:00 [1]

a few pushups, situps, curls

Note

Stopped at the resale shop and browsed xc skis. Unfortunately the selection of crazy old boots did not match the much wider selection of old (three pin) skis. They only had a few more modern types, but only 1 pair of boots for each type.

7 PM

Erg rowing 42:00 [1]
slept:10.0

Before today started, I pictured a pre church or afternoon mega ride. Instead I slept in, then took a three hour nap after lunch.

Leg still feels off when sitting around. I could probably run on it and it would feel fine, just achy when you have the time to notice these things. Tempted to treat it as a tendinitis issue, do more warmup, and hope for the best.

I should have my tire changed here in the near future, since it seems to have a consistent slow leak.

Note

Some twinges from my right leg near the stress reaction spot of c. 2006. ARGH. I am extremely envious of people who can go out and run all sorts of long distances. :( I thought I had a modest build up this fall, am not super fat, and wasn't drinking much soda. why why why

Orienteering 3:47:53 intensity: (3:08:25 @0) + (23:34 @1) + (12:27 @2) + (3:27 @3) *** 8.69 mi (26:13 / mi) +249m 24:05 / mi

Hid 10 flags at Bishop Lake. I thought they were easy on Purple Pen, but it seemed more challenging in the field.

Jeff and Shadow joined me.

Lots of issues - my printer went into twenty minutes per page mode. Also, it is apparently out of some ink colors. So I had a not very legible, faint, mostly blue thing. I took some pictures of the Purple Pen screen on my phone, but the one that turned out blurry naturally had four controls on it.

All flags have a reflective stripe so they can be used for night practice.

Excellent practice anyway. Hopefully I will tidy up the maps and get them out tonight or tomorrow.

Harder to get out the door today. Maybe more sleep needed....

Cool until 20 minutes in, then roasting!
7 PM

Note

Tried to double, but I picked the wrong show so you couldn't hear a damn thing if I used either of the available pieces of equipment. Maybe a different show for next time. Maybe a cheap stereo for the basement to relocate speakers closer.

Brrr. Boots were a good choice! I was dragging on the fourth lap, which made it easy to rationalize calling it there under the guise of "getting to work early."

Front tire was completely flat at the start, and headlight battery was of unknown charge, so I kept it local.

Wednesday Jan 2, 2013 #

Walking 40:00 [1] 1.5 mi (26:40 / mi)

Hiked with boots and dragging a sixty pound sled. Swamp was the hardest part. Very easy to stay warm. I should rig up a harness for this. And do it at Huron Meadows.

Note

Objectives for 2013:

19:59 5k
1:34:59 half
Top 3 at SMOC meets
Competitive finish at a 24 hr AR
Host canoe o

Enabling goals:
180 lbs
3000 bike miles
1000 running miles
750 controls (can include setting/scouting)

I may come up short, but I tried aiming right at the mark in 2012 (finish 24 AR) and it was not successful. If I aim higher, and fall short, I'll still beat where I would be with less ambitious goals.
8 AM

Biking 50:51 intensity: (2:32 @0) + (9:01 @1) + (34:40 @2) + (4:38 @3) 7.91 mi (9.3 mph) +16m
ahr:142 max:163 slept:7.0 weight:204.2lbs shoes: Old Red Schwinn Rocket

Snow is a great sandy two track simulator.
