Finally got out, inspiration provided by m-i-l firing up some awful family movie for dear daughter.

The slow pace is from two events: one, a lengthy story at Park #1 from a guy who had been looking for his wallet for three hours. He had lost it drinking there on a previous night, and it also had the title for the truck he just bought, so he was hurting.

Next, I took a two track north from that park, and the soft, deep mud ruts, soft, deep sand, and soft, deep snow made jogging a more better option.

A raccoon was not happy to see me on the two track.

Water seems high:

Lots of deer after that. Two dozen by the church where I got married, two dozen more on another back road, a half dozen a half mile from the in laws, and another half dozen just before their place.

Argh, in scramble heading out I left the practice map on the counter. Hopefully hikes and bikes are enough this weekend. Also, will look at calorie counting after the long weekend.

No map, so I elected to bike down to my father in law's place of business. I was originally going to take the White Pine trail, but it was way too soft so I bailed out on some gas company two track and risked life and limb on old 131. Happy with cruising speed given my gearing.

Brian Matthews is likely to join us in whatever config we put up for the Rage. His wealth of experience will be an asset.

Note

Planning some training for the weekend. Cannonsburg Game Area had great terrain, and I only saw half, and it was covered in snow, so I'll go back with a different course tomorrow after I drop off dear wife and daughter.

I'm trying to find some nice seasonal road/two tracks by my in laws for biking. I know of some shortcuts, but a nice long haul would be great. Other than the rail trail.

I'm back in the gravel again.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

for some nice easy aerobic base building. Saw deer cross the road just meters ahead; many fat raccoons; some possum, and another skunk on Dixboro. The skunk was the scariest.

Jeff was not sold on the "Think Ford Third" concept, and the Lost Islanders are awol.

Note

4th overall at Raccoongaine, missed third by just one medium control, so if I can prepare a more point dense finishing route...well, something to think about for next time.

At least had I gone for 30/40 for the 30 points, I still would be 4th because I couldn't have done it in four minutes to beat 3rd.

Awaiting Raccoongaine results. EXHAUSTED.

2nd in Elite Men to the overall winners, who were unstoppable (Team SOG), 46 of 50 points; I am guessing they are in the high 20s for distance, since I had ~29 controls with 17 miles (AP sometimes rounds up a bit). Brain fuzzy; so no confirmation of overall placing.

Rick took 1st in Super Vets. Cooper was nursing a swollen ankle, amazingly grabbing 22 controls in 5:15. Shane returned on time, but not in the money in a competitive masters division.

Biggest error was to #63. I thought I followed a bearing, but got pushed around by crappy briars, didn't check my compass on the trail, went back down the hill a bit, before finally figuring it out and fighting the fight to the right spot. Lost my number en route! Thankfully that was it save a few bobbles. Felt great through three hours, then started to fade a bit, certainly was low energy in the last two hours. Perhaps went out a shade too hard, plus lack of trekking fitness and hill work.

When the woods were clean, they were awesome. When they were green, you were getting scratched.

Great road trip, would do the whole experience again.

Orange line is intended route, but I found myself ahead of schedule so I changed plans for better or worse. Green is my timing targets assuming 2 mph, but Raccoon Creek is more of a 2.5-3 mph park. I should plan better for a range of possible distances, with better pre-set finishing loops depending on pacing later in the course, so I can keep the last hour more lucrative than I did.

Cold and icy. Hard to keep your heart rate up while walking in 17° on flat ground.

Testing some newer equipment. I couldn't find my kitty litter, so I ran the pack with 135 oz of Mountain Dew, and the pouch with 35 oz of Mountain Dew. Water bottles were full, and stayed that way when the tubes froze. Thankfully walking in 17° doesn't use much water.

Also used my new Roclite 319s. Perhaps a touch stiff; we will see. But feet not tenderized by the aggressive sole on hard ground, so +points.

Might be on the edge for ramping up bike miles, so maybe a canoe and hike before the next ride.

Note

My Roclite 319s arrived. My 295s leave my feet a little tender on extended treks, but my cushy Cascadias don't have enough traction - hopefully this is the best of both. May not use them for Raccoongaine since there's not much time to break 'em in. I would still like to try spikes, but with the Oroc 340 being replaced by a goretex only Oroc 380 at a staggering $180 list, that won't be anytime soon.

I was spooked by the ice I saw on last night's hike, so I stuck to pavement, although it probably would've been okay with today's afternoon temps. For variety, I went up to Brighton, kissed the south end of downtown, then headed over in the general direction of the Green residence before heading home via Hamburg. I overdressed, but at least I got out.

Trying to break in my o nerd goggles for Rage use. Worst case I go back to my old cable temple glasses and tape the one lens.

Merely participating in the Rage sounds less interesting with each day, but racing it sounds more interesting. So I spent the whole time considering what ifs for various changes to last year's execution. Would my prospective team be down for sustained high speed trekking? Will I be in shape to bike tow early and often; would potential recipients be on board with being towed early and often? Will 72 hours of orienteering between Rage #1 and Rage #2 be enough to clean up the mistakes and give a shot at clearing the course? How much more should we push at the start while still having enough left for the end? That sort of thing.

I really wish it was in September again. I want to do more testing first!

How are there enough days/weeks/month to ever field check a map? This is a route to check boulder heights....in just the northeast corner.

This won't even address vegetation updates, like possibly needing a little green striping north of the radio tower.

Very slow walking- foot broke through crust every step. Cut original route short to make lunch. Excellent terrain.

1 - no problem, easy to see the hill and then the saddle. Saw #2 hill on the way as I skirted private property
2 - interesting land shape; I didn't realize it until I got on the hill
3 - luckily found a trail to make the snow walking easier!
4 - hard to read the hill just west of the swamp, but you could get to the swamp anyway
5 - my most confused moment, hard to trust the $4 back up compass I had with me today. But it was still right. Just hard to read the flattish terrain until I finally got near the small hill west of the target ridge/hill
6 - woot, hoped I would find it, got it!
7 - trivial, just a path out

I now realized I had no chance, at 2 mph of snow hole punching, to do the whole thing, so I hoofed it up 4 mile to do the back half

14 - saw 15 on the way from the road. Even walking the road was good practice on understanding the topography. Woods were awesome and open in the first half; here they were a bit thicker
15 - nice hill climb
16 - second most confusing part. It's clear that flatter, more subtle terrain is not my strong suit
17 - bah, track shows high but I went to the low part of the depression :-)
18 - nice view

Dropped 19 for time as well to make lunch. Made new #19 the hill I walked over en route to the finish.

Sure, they were all orange-y, but it felt good. Wished I had snowshoes!

Friday Mar 8, 2013 #

Note

Plotted 1.5 dozen points around Canonsburg game area for tomorrow. Hopefully comparing with the MMBA map kept everything on state land. Similar travel time from the in laws, and it looks drier than Haymarsh. I hear streams can be deep.

On an unrelated note, for fun I messed around with "what if" for forest sprints at Huron Meadows, and it seems possible. A test case made for a 15c/2.3 km course, and there was a lot of terrain still available, so you could run concurrent unique courses between Hammel and the Huron, if you were going to say, have an A meet.

I will have some free time Saturday near Big Rapids. Thinking of doing some nav training in that area, maybe Haymarsh? Hard to say how wet it would be - I did a barebones rogaine type thing there in my very formative years, so I never made it far from the start. USGS shows a lot of streams.

PLRA streamer course: spoiler alerts below! You are warned.
.

.

.

.

#1 - nice location. I got pushed a reentrant over, but the nice topography made that obvious and I corrected
#2 - panicked, checked an earlier depression, but then recognized the ridge and popped over into the wrong deep depression (unmapped?), but figured I was in the right area and popped over to the west one
#3 - awesome hiking over there, luckily was on the hill I thought. Great terrain for figuring out the map
#4 - got nervous, but luckily had followed the high ground correctly
#5 - more fantastic terrain, loved it. Small error by not realizing the marsh I hit was not the lower part, so I sniffed around north before realizing the western spur was south, so then I charged down
#6 - walked right to the right spot, but didn't see the streamers. Checked south, nope, passed by again, checked north, nope, came back...doh!

1-6 was my favorite part - all off trail, all great woods

#7 - the bee line is horrifying. I got pushed around quite a bit just trying to fight through. Also, I couldn't find the streamers, even after grabbing my phone and checking the clues. There are tracks; maybe the hunter removed it.

#8 - No troubles, took road since I already walked the ridge
#9 - missed the ridge, but when you have a road as a catch, not a big deal. I was losing concentration.
#10 - panicked into wrong depression, honestly got a bit lucky and found the right one. I was not in top form by them

Sprint finish to beat three hours.
