Possible Waterloo map updates required in the future. MMBA gets to put in a trail.

Orienteering (mapping) 1:10:10 [0] 3.55 mi (19:44 / mi) +34m 19:10 / mi

Scouting around the Adventure Day venue. Hopefully I remember everything by the time I have a chance to draft some markups.

I'm thinking of scaling it waaay down, having everything right up by the building.

A bit too many flies and rain for comfy mapping though.

Trying to maximize our DINK opportunities this week.

Nice walk around Belle Isle. My favorite parts were the westish end with the view of Windsor and Detroit:

and the crushed gravel out and back around the Blue Heron Lagoon, where we saw this guy:

What is now the standard route around the north side of Huron Meadows. Nice enough exposure to typical features. I think they were getting the hang of it, and they sounded like they would be back.

I think I will condense all lessons to HM, just so convenient.

Trying to make up for not biking nearly enough in the last month. Kind of a sightseeing tour - over to Murray Lake for a little single track, then up to Brighton High School where I see they are putting in a new track and football field, even though my wife still doesn't have a projector in her room (shades of a half billion dollar corporate welfare hockey rink while the DIA has to pawn some art), then through a middle school that is also getting a new track and field. I think I should have tried what looked like a shortcut into HM but I'm not sure if it's cool or not. Maybe I'll walk it first sometime.

Not my finest orienteering, but I used a wrist compass, which was a stupid idea..

Icebugs worked well, other than like every other shoe, I failed to keep them tied. Awesome on logs. Noisy on blacktop. :)

I really scaled back my ambitious plans. But a small sampler is streamered. Hopefully they are in the right places.

Walking 41:00 [0] 2.37 mi (17:18 / mi)

I list these things not to count them as training so much as to give an excuse for why I didn't do proper exercise - when you are only home for 15 minutes between 7 am and 8:30 pm, you sort of run out of steam to do a 30 mile bike ride.

Orienteering 43:00 [5] 2.0 mi (21:30 / mi)
spiked:4/5c slept:4.0 shoes: Brooks Cascadia 8s

4 point starting course. We chased the lead pack around rather than swimming to #1. Then swam the big gap to #2 - I was super, duper slow, probably had us nearly last. We made up good time to #3; many were confused by the spur - Cooper's night training course sure helped. We overshot #4, but realized it and backtracked and went right to it. Whoops. But only a couple minute error, no harm no foul.

Biking 46:00 [3] * 7.0 mi (9.1 mph)
spiked:3/3c shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

I forgot to start the gps tracker so all distances until later are approximate.

Started with a run around the park to some singletrack in the dark, then roads over to Waterworks park in Holly.
5 AM

Canoeing 4:05:00 [1] 15.0 mi (16:20 / mi)
spiked:7/7c shoes: Pirate Canoe

Quite a challenging paddle. Five CPs scattered upstream of Waterworks. Dawn was only coming up, which was a mixed bag because you could sort of see some stuff, but the CPs pop less as the darkness fades. We went 9-12-11-10-13.

Almost over shot take over for 12-11, but I thought the terrain looked right, so we ignored the other teams. Today's success was largely determined by how much we ignored other teams.

Hoped to find a shortcut from 10-13, but the stream on the map ain't there that I saw!

It was fun to be up with a lot of strong teams heading back to 14 for the Shiawassee stretch.

We had mixed moments on the Shiawassee. I am a terrible sternsman. Sometimes I could get the boat turned around, sometimes I could not. Maria was cool with it, phew. I was okay for the first 4-5 miles, but it got a little grueling the last two into Fenton.
9 AM

Running 45:00 [3] * 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
spiked:2/2c shoes: Pearl Izumi Hikable Clipless B

Jogged back to the start/finish from the canoe take out. I started to get concerned - I felt very lethargic, just no energy. We negotiated that we could walk the uphills. We followed CP 6 trail into the mountain bike trails - it washed with the guys that took the roads and was more fun. But I was having trouble finding energy and I was getting warm. If we weren't shaded, I was a little miserable.
10 AM

Biking 1:10:00 [3] * 14.0 mi (12.0 mph)
spiked:5/5c shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

We took the park road and roads to bike CP 18, but I think cutting up and taking the new two track might be faster. I wonder if anyone did it? I didn't see many bikes so maybe everyone did.

I was dragging and felt bad about slowing Maria down, especially when we turned south onto Fagan.

Orienteering 2:10:00 [3] ***** 4.0 mi (32:30 / mi)
spiked:3/5c shoes: Pearl Izumi Hikable Clipless B

After dragging on the bike, I figured I could go alright on the o section, and that's my specialty, so time to do work!

Then I fouled up #23 right out of the box. ARGH. In my defense, Maria read me the wrong clue. But we didn't overshoot too bad, and nearly tripped over it when we fought our way back north.

Did well on #26, and #22 was about right. Now I still am dragging, but my mood is really up. Hoo ah!

#28 was very challenging. Looks trivial on a map, but you cannot run a straight line - the vegetation was CRAZY. We stalled out in a thicket or two, eventually discovering that areas near swamps were not as overgrown. Good call, Maria. So instead of a beeline, we took the north edge around.

HafkeMRA? gave us a nice trail through the swamp to #27, and when we hit I saw Mark Voit walking swiftly away from a reentrant in the approximately right area, so I figured they bagged it. We didn't see it, so we went for high ground and then saw the correct bigger reentrant to the north. Then we headed for the road and saw them scouting around reentrant areas to the south.

To #25 was a mess. We tried to cut through the woods, but they were too thick, so we went down to the swamp which was dry on the edge. We were pretty lucky on this one, ending up on the right very shallow spur, and wandering up and spotting the streamer on the correct tree.

#24 looked like an out and back, and we were overtime so we skipped it. Luke said it was only knee deep, no swimming. Bah! USGS maps and bingo routes. :-P

I really wanted to clear it, but there was just not enough time with those crazy thick woods.

1 PM

Biking 1:00:00 [3] 11.0 mi (11.0 mph)
spiked:4/4c shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

We arrived at the singletrack too late to do all of them, so we jumped at the mandatory points. Hike a bike was an option, but the woods were so thick I missed the first chance, and Maria rightfully cursed me for the second chance. But we were quickly off. I perked up a little - couldn't fly, but could move a little. I drafted Maria a LOT in this race. Not as much draft as Jeff, for sure, but it helped.
2 PM

Orienteering 50:00 [3] ** 2.0 mi (25:00 / mi)
spiked:2/2c shoes: Pearl Izumi Hikable Clipless B

Tricky score layout for the rogaine finish. I originally thought about trying for four, but we quickly realized that at our travel speed, and fearing thick woods, that we would bag the minimum two points and lock it up, getting back as soon as possible. #33 and #34 (iirc) looked very topographically solid so we went for those. Finally, nice woods! I've been waiting all day for that.

Our plan paid off as MarkVT and his wife also nabbed the same number of points, but were four minutes back. Phew, very close.

4 PM

Adventure Race 1 [0] 0.0 mi +297m null / mi

Race less the opening run/swim loop, bike to paddle, paddle, and hike back.

Very happy with the results. If AR doesn't teach you to hang in there and hope for the best when you feel lousy for 4-6 hours, I'm not sure what will.

Key areas for improvement:

* paddle technique
* bike speed
* run stamina
* gut reduction

Note

Race looks pretty long. We hope to fly early before the heat. We will not clear it. Lots to keep track of as well - long multi discipline legs.

After the bugs by the river, we elected to revise the post-breakfast portion to an urban, bug-free setting, so we wandered about the pre art fair environment. On a whim, we found the Fourth Avenue Birkenstock store, but it wasn't opening for a while, so we decided that we would just kill time and wander about for a bit. Nice, not too many people yet and a bit of shade near buildings. I've never cut through that section of campus before so that was novel.

Then we returned to the shoe store. No IceBugs on display, so I broke down and asked. They had a 12. Some interesting design choices, but the dobs looked cooled, so I decided to chance paying full price and hoping that I adored them for orienteering. I mean, they even mention orienteering on the tag!! Then dear wife picked up some sandals, and they called the owner, and he said the IceBugs could also be on the art fair sale, so they knocked off about a 1/3, woo hoo.

One of the things that's still odd about living in a metro area versus the small rural town of my upbringing is the proximity of news to home or work. There were rumors about darker types of matters, but it was largely kept under wraps and certainly never reported to the tiny local classified-driven papers - if you didn't know cops or EMTs, you were never finding out about things. Anyway...

Here:

Slightly west of Igor's latest map addition in another chunk of Brighton Rec, a body was recently found. Not a warm fuzzy story.

Earlier today I retrieved the canoe for the Fury. So far it looks like the rack system will work okay. If you shake the canoe, the truck shakes.

And we are registered for the 5.7 on Mackinac, no turning back now.

Saturday Jul 13, 2013 #

Note

Dear wife is eyeing up the 5.7 mile race at the end of the tourist season on Mackinac. She ran the half marathon there a few years back. If I could get back to ~December 5k shape by then, a projected 5.7 mile time would be competitive (ie top 10%). It's several months, which seems possible with some token discipline.

One of the people who did a first event at Ali's Bishop Lake meet. Very nice guy, hope we see him again. From Jackson.

Had a 2 pm session as well, but canceled this morning for illness.

Mixed feelings about these sessions - they are fun, but they have been tougher to schedule lately and the retention rate has been low. It was high when I dragged my friends around; random people less so. Would there be a more productive way to grow the sport?

Nice walk on the part of the Hudson Mills paved trail I hadn't tried before west of the river. Exciting news - it looks like it will extend the final 2.7 miles to Dexter! That should be a nice setup when done.

Should've broken an hour had rocks not plagued dear wife's sandals. Also, very muggy and buggy.

Nice wildlife - several colorful birds, a doe and two fawns just three meters off the path, and this guy, who I don't think was in danger of breaking the 10 mph speed limit.

Great training exercise, thanks Igor.

#1 - thought I was doing well, figured I was north of line, so when I saw wrong depression to south I headed for it. Couldn't quite figure it out, decided it was too small and went north, phew!

#2. - good with this

#3. - run off the hill and around the swamp

#4. - Intended to take high ground between two reentrants, but missed a little north and noticed the large amount of flatness, easy tweak to the line

#5 - Teased by small pocket on way up hill, then stared at correct depression but streamer was on other side of small tree, got confused, then rechecked.

#6 - intended to go straighter, but recovered

#7 - whoops, was distracted by trails, then got a little lost, was ready to bail, decided to pretend hill was correct hill, woot

#8. - as intended, mostly

#9 - wow, so no kidding, that sure is a fence, ouch. Not sure how I got off line, got into the flattish area, was confused, saw #11, figured it must be #11, corrected. Very nice area.

#10. Should have kept going straight, but chasing it down is okay for me.

#11 - not sure why I drifted SE of line, but easy correction

#12. - follow the fence, follow the reentrant.

#13. - went to right depression, didn't see it, checked around, eventually saw scraps on ground and retied them.

#14 - Whoops, veered south but easy correction.

#15. - like intended

#16. - there are better routes, but I was tired.

F - awful route out. Not sure how I missed the one trail.

Soooo....many....spiderwebs....
