Dear wife wishes to do another Mackinac run.

This one does not have a companion longer race, so all of the faster runners are lumped into the 10k, which has all off the climb of my recent 5.7 miler plus a bit more, as it starts from ~lake level and not 1/3rd of the way up the hill.

The open M35-39 is thus much faster than the 5.7 - both 1st and 2nd were sub seven (6:36 to win!), despite the tougher course than the 5.7.

However, there are three Clydesdale categories. At my current weight I would be in the middle one, and first in that slows to 7:05/mile. Even if I dropped 3-18 pounds, I would still be eligible for the lightest of Clydes categories, where first was faster than me at 6:48, but 3rd was already down to an easy peasy 8:40. Or I could bulk up. 220+ is 7:36 to win. I could do that with an extra 17 lbs, eh?

Note

Also I should suck it up and start riding in the rain, or get a trainer. :|

Chilson was well above the number of starts of other meets this season, landing it third place in starts for 2012-present, just four out of first. Besides Barbara and Ali being wonderful, why? Is Sunday a better day in our market? Is Brighton a better location? IFFAC as a marketing tour de force?

1st M35-39, 15th overall (~1400 participants? May include some walkers). WOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Turns out I was the second fastest M35, but the other guy was ten minutes faster to take the overall win, and the results printing doesn't double dip.

The nature preserve SE of Ford and Prospect. Cute little wooded section of the trail with some hills, a saddle, some marshes, the odd spur. I enjoyed those bits. Wet jogging though on the east cornfield edge.

Tried to wind it up a bit, two quarters below 7:00/mile. Not sure how long I could hold it and what that means for pace on Saturday. :/

I am tempted to log this under orienteering - I ran with the Bird Hills map to practice map reading at speed. I do too much scouting and setting at 2 mph and not enough at 5 or 6 mph which shows up in some big errors out on the o course.

Interesting trail network. I lost it at one point and walked around for a few minutes. But the trail I did follow in the woods was great. The woods are very open, but unfortunately nearly featureless, save a few small hills and a cool big ditch.

I am most intrigued by the 800 meter loop right by the parking lot. I wonder if it would be a good idea to sort of do an orienteering-oriented interval - hammer around the flats, and up the small 12 m hill near the end, peaking at the 750 m mark, then walk slowly back down the hill to recover and do it again. Repeat a few times. Certainly not enough hill for rogaine training, but something anyway.

Also, I see there's a nature area up at the corner of that road and Ford, but just a few small loops. I'll have to try it sometime.

Fantastic well-set course in amazing terrain.

My favorite day of the weekend, in part because the design played to my strengths - pushing as best I can and getting lucky near the circle.

Big dumb mistake to #2. I was timid to #1, got overconfident after finding it easily, and enjoyed the scenery too much en route to 2, and couldn't find my way around the hill. ARGH. But, I recovered and plugged away.

Took trails to #4. The split worked out, but I should have enjoyed the terrain and gone more directly.

Almost took trails to #9, but figured I should enjoy the woods, and I loved running along the creek. I nearly ran into a turkey - as I passed by it just appeared out of some brush about 2 m away.

It felt very good to run to a spot and find a control, unlike yesterday. :-)

Lesson learned was that I should step off the beeline a bit and go back to stringing together more reliable, easier navigation routes until my skills improve. In the meantime I can get faster and buy the time it takes to meander.

3rd of 300 for finish split, woo woo!

Another 10/10, would race again!

Disastrous middle on an extremely well-set course in fracking fabulous terrain.

Stayed slow and safe 1-3, thought I was on line to 4, misread and added five minutes. Saw Igor but wasn't sure if he had four or not so I couldn't even cheat.

Bonehead to 8- proceeded as if I was leaving nine. Dumb!

Knew ten would be the killer, and still did not give it proper respect. Found a half dozen controls from other courses. Fifteen minutes of errors before I finally brute forced from the embankment to catch.

Missed thirteen a bit. I cannot run on a bearing to save my life. Dogged fourteen and fifteen in order to kick for the third fastest of 317 finish splits. Woo woo

I have so much room for improvement!

I am thinking I will be conservative in the long.

Ouch! Fortunately, I am willing myself to use a growth mindset, and am brimming with all of the possibilities I can do for training to fix the myriad mistakes.

Jens: "After last week's bad run, I was hoping this would be a confidence booster."
Igor: "You don't need confidence. You need training."

Very true words!

1 - well, I was close. Then ran off.
2 - argh, I thought I made it down around the second pond. No clearings left uninspected. First pass from the trail bend was semi-clear, imho. I'll forgive myself for that part of the mistakes.
3 - meh. Almost overshot, but these were my kinda of features, so at least I knew when to check up.
4 - To cross...the uncrossable swamp...... then blow the landing, argh.
5 - How did I miss this?
6 - woot, spike. Green was not very green
7 - ran hard, missed circle, but checked up at the right time
8 - Ugly! I swear I tried to go north. Vegetation shoved me around? Not good. In hindsight, I think the best option for a hack like me was to take the road south of 7, then run fast all the way around, and then attack from the road as I eventually did.
9 - easy, follow Igor
10 - seemed easy, follow Igor, but missed west a bit
11 - I should've cut the swamp. If uncrossable wasn't bad, that should have been fine. Still barely read the reentrants rights
12 - Argh. At this point, who cares, walking around. My only chance for a fast split was to F anyway, so why try to get to it at speed.
F - deep breath, then hammer! I saw 5:35/mile; Training Center says max was 5:03 pace. It felt like flying. Highlight of the day!

You are welcome to point and laugh. I'll be back in form one of these weeks. Maybe once when it doesn't rain so I can use glasses for more than to the first control.

Control pickup with Michelle. They seemed much easier, except 8 which is still really tough - vague terrain, my arch nemesis. Nice to chat with Mrs. Green.

I see why I missed #10 in the race by a little - the swamp to land transition was much less distinct here than at your usual SE Michigan venues - Silver Lake, Highland, etc. So trying to use that edge was not as reliable. I should have noticed this earlier on the course.

tl;dr I found a person in a ditch.

I kicked around going...not going out. Then I kicked around what route...maybe I could sneak up to ILRA and do a few hill climbs...nah, it would be after 10 when I got there, and I should probably not be the permit holder who gets busted.

I decided to go nice and easy - my knee doesn't hurt per se, but after Saturday's big ride, I know it exists, which isn't the best. But maybe a little longer than the standard 15 mile loop.

So I went up to 9 Mile, then back to 8, over to Dixboro, but down to 5, rather than 6, to pad it out two more miles.

Coming up Spencer from 5 to 6, I was cruising along and saw a small figure in the ditch, sort of fetal position.

Odd.

I continued up towards 6, but then decided to check things out. Maybe he was injured and not just randomly camping.

I went back, and fortunately, he was not dead and responded, groggily, to some questions. He had walked up from Ann Arbor, goes to EMU, was 22, and named Jeremy. As I was wondering how and if I could get him home (bike to my house for my truck? Call the township police?) some people drove by. Then stopped, then reversed. The guy asked me what was up, and I mentioned I saw this guy sleeping here. The young lady (guy's gf) had a good manner and was able to get some more info out of him. They got his address and then loaded him up to drive him home.

Looking at his address, he took several random turns to end up where he did. And I took several random turns to end up where he did. I don't know if Will and Paige also took random turns to end up where we did. I don't think they would have seen him; my bike and position on the road were suited to it and theirs (opposite direction) was not.

Hopefully it all ends well. My hunch is he was maybe on some drugs, or something. He never quite got to coherency like you'd expect if he had just normally taken a nap in a ditch.

Send in the balance owed to ILRA for night o. Did not figure out how/when to ask about if they care if I rent some bathroom facilities, or if I just let people deal with it. There will be two on the course....

I should start scouting that soon, and grab more trail gps tracks, especially for the periphery.

Also finally got the proceeds sent in from Spring Mill. After Adventure Day printing, and by the time SMOC pays the insurance fee to OUSA, it will be about break even. Good thing we are a non profit!

Which reminds me that I am wondering about picking a meet or two and maybe trying a cheapo facebook ad. I wish I had the courage to do so when they offered some credit.
