190s here I come

Thursday Jan 30, 2014 #

Note
slept:7.0 weight:202.4lbs

I have to get better about jumping right on evening exercise when I realize the original family exercise plans have been scrapped. Which is usually done more as an eventual "well I guess not" than formal declaration. Especially if I eat for it ahead of time. At least I think I managed about break even, which is better than say, Fall '13.

Also, I hate packing for races!
4 PM

Note

If I intend to keep biking on public roads, I should stop looking in other cars as I drive the freeway. Two cars, left lane, 80 mph, one car length gap....both playing on phones.

Running 33:00 intensity: (7 @0) + (2:15 @1) + (8:38 @2) + (17:00 @3) + (4:52 @4) + (8 @5) 3.25 mi (10:10 / mi) +73m 9:30 / mi

Around Bird Hills w/ Igor. Fun stuff! IceBugs were a good choice. Much easier drive to pick up the daughter. :)

Erg rowing 29:49 intensity: (2:32 @0) + (24:55 @1) + (2:22 @2) 2.0 mi (14:54 / mi)
ahr:116 max:144 slept:7.5 weight:202.2lbs

Tried to make it higher effort since I hit snooze too many times and tonight doesn't look so good for activities.

Tuesday Jan 28, 2014 #

Note

I can still feel those lunges! No new strength stuff in the last week or two before a race!
5 AM

Erg rowing 45:05 intensity: (1:31 @0) + (43:34 @1) 2.25 mi (20:02 / mi) +1m 20:01 / mi
ahr:107 max:128 slept:5.0 weight:203.4lbs

Had a higher effort portion near the beginning, but couldn't quite get back there after one of the commercial breaks.

As much as I like watching tv/movies in the dark, there was something to be said for convenient viewing of my hr to keep it a little more on boil.

Stopped by original location of my lbs to get a sport chair wheel looked at - they plan to have a lot of rides out of the new branch near my house which sounds awesome.

Walking warm up/down 7:32 intensity: (1:10 @0) + (6:22 @1) 0.5 mi (15:04 / mi)
ahr:91 max:101 shoes: Brooks Ghost 5s

I have discomfort where one of my big toes meets the foot. I'm not sure if it's over stress from poor xc ski technique used twice vigorously back to back, or from when I stepped on a hanger in my basement. But I can run on it and bike and row, so not much of a setback for now. Nervous about skiing again, though I did splurge for some glide chemicals for the next outing.

Running 30:41 intensity: (6:54 @1) + (23:47 @2) 3.0 mi (10:14 / mi)
ahr:138 max:146 slept:8.0 weight:203.2lbs shoes: Brooks Ghost 5s

Weight seems stuck. Maybe I've been eating back too many exercise calories, or else it's just the nature of fluctuations.
6 AM

Walking warm up/down 7:32 [1] 0.5 mi (15:04 / mi)
ahr:96 max:138 shoes: Brooks Ghost 5s

Miserably lethargic. I should have done this earlier as well. The Bling Ring was a bit slow which didn't help, although they did mention kitten heels.

HR seemed high for the pace. :(
1 PM

Biking 1:54:24 [2] 16.69 mi (8.8 mph)
shoes: The General

I had one of those days where you have a plan, and mean to get somewhere by say, 12:30, and then just before, you get mixed up and think you need to leave by 12:30, and then by the time you get to A2 you are cursing the city and the parking....(and then cursing yourself repeatedly when you are halfway there and realize no Garmin)

But I made it with not more than two minutes to spare. I was a little confused, but eventually figured out that the "16 mile gravel road ride" was the 20 mile ride, just modified due to conditions. I left last, woo hoo.

Kind of fun to be in a big group of bikes in A2; I do not believe motorists felt the same way!

I made a lucky move and passed half the field turning into the Argo Cascades, and then I saw a single speed cx bike ridden by someone in Wheels in Motion kit, so I had located Paul S. Had a nice ride with him.

Paul saved his big slide. I wiped out spectacularly on Joy Road as I hit ice on our surge to catch the next clump. Paul's friend runs 80 mpw, which piqued my interest, so I was chatting with her as she hit ice and dumped; luckily I didn't run her over, managing to get feet down and having only a brushing contact.

Good hill work in Barton Hills; good bike skills everywhere else. Fun stuff, and I do not begrudge anyone who skipped the drive!

ahr:134 max:158 shoes: Rossignol skis

Back to Maybury to explore some of the smaller trails. Some more demanding spots meant a few extra falls, but nothing too bad. The more exposed main trails were noticeably colder, and as 6 pm rolled around, I started to head towards getting chilled. Very fun!

Over a frozen creek...because I could!

Note

Registered for Raccoongaine - it's already half full and I wanted to lock in a spot. I am hoping Double M will join so we can make an assault on Elite Mixed. Last year I had enough points to win Elite Mixed, but lacked the Mixed part. Instead I was stuck getting wailed on by mayer22. I think he covered 30% more distance!

Chasing Igor around Maybury. He's soooo much faster! Then I bailed because I don't trust traffic. Good call - some FedEx Ground truck was idling down 50 mph roads at a blazing 25 mph. Only hit parts of the big trails; I will have to go back for some of the smaller ones.

Caffeine mostly detox day #3. Cold turkey on MLK as we ran out of caffeinated beverages. Some headache throb later in the day. Just one soda yesterday with tolerable headaches, and targeting one per day here on out. History says this will last two weeks tops.

Note

woo woo, my lbs opens in just ten days.

Yeah, eight hours of sleep, if the part where the dogs pestered me counts.

Still a bit early to tell, but using the first 19 days of data points, acceptable race weight for WT is on track. The signal is very noisy though, so more time will tell for sure.
8 PM

Lazy treadmill walk. Right shin has been feeling a little shin splinty so I'm not sure what's up and am backing off slightly. :(

1% and 6% alternating on the halfs.

Note
slept:6.5 weight:204.2lbs (rest day)

Unintentional rest day. Needed to squeeze Ortonville in during the early AM, but halfway up 23 it was carnage everywhere, so I was concerned I would either be at risk of spinning or stuck in such traffic as to not get dear daughter to her appointment. Then the afternoon got away.....

An exceptionally lazy rowing session. Skipping was tempting, but I had already eaten for it. I need more travel food discipline. And it would be easier if we didn't reward our buddy for favors by taking him to places where stuff other than salad sounds good.

Busy schedule didn't let me walk the trails near the tournament venue. Almost was too tired to head down to the fitness room, but since I already ate the calories for the exercise, I figured I should hit it.

Then a couple squats with dumbbells after just because they have a nice dumbbell rack.

Road running shoes were not the best choice. I should just keep the IceBugs in the car!

Excellent o physical training, what with the uneven footing and good climb in Bird Hills on the great route Igor chose.

Only negative was that I misjudged travel time. It took 48 minutes to get to Dixboro, not 45. Although I was not the last parent to arrive.

I should commit all of my energies to finding a job that lets me stay at home as much as possible. I cannot handle the traffic anymore.

Oh, I now see the error of my ways. Should've gone up Whitmore Lake Rd, then east on Warren. Twice as far but no lights and maybe a lot less traffic.

Made arrangements and raced over to Ortonville Recreation Area to take on the 10 CP sampler course from Ken and Jeff.

GPS grabbed the TA from the Summer Quest, so woo hoo. The last few miles of roads are all hardpack snow/ice, so use caution.

Jogged up to Fox Lake Road and plunged into the woods. I thought I would try to stay off trails, taking the best roads ignoring the presence of trails.

Whew! Tough going. The lightly crusted snow easily postholed, and scratched at your shin as your leg rocked forward. Slow going. But I thought I should eventually hit a big low area. Hm, looks a little odd. I'm rusty!

Continued on more. But no low area. Only a mess of hills. Do I know the right contour interval? This depression should be on there, but there's nothing east of my start that looks like that.

Aw man, I buggered the first control again. So I bailed out to the road to reset. I arrived an intersection. This was not the intersection I started from...so I cheated and checked my phone. Whoops! This was the actual start. ARGH.

Clean after that. Did some on the SE portion. 9-10-6-8. With the botched start and tough foot of snow, progress was slow so I saved the other six for later. Fun stuff, several cute creeks to cross, excellent terrain, only a few scratchy spots that could be avoided with different routes. Not sure how it greens up though.

Great workout. I fear I did not add in enough hill training for Cabin Fever. Maybe next year.....(or for Raccoongaine....)

I see my no exercise triggers are: lack of sleep. Mainlined Mountain Dew to ensure alertness driving back from Windsor last night, but then I was wired when I got home. Dog #1 stood on me at 4:30 am for breakfast, and wouldn't leave me alone, so bleary sleep until finally getting up without much time to do anything before practice. Bless him, but sleep in, bro.

I am going in a different direction regarding trainer videos.

I will "badger mile" the bike trainer at around 14 mph. Close enough for estimates. Feels like jamming along Whitmore Lake Road in the zone.

Also, more poor dinner choices so hopefully that burned some off.

Friday Jan 10, 2014 #

Note

Yeeeouch, looks like dinner blew the doors off responsible eating. Better choices next time. Wouldn't have been terrible had I gotten up and gotten in a run. Hopefully Saturday compensates.

Originally thought about targeting 2 lbs per week of weight loss. I've done 1.8 before. But now considering that my focus race is just over 26 weeks away, and I have about 26 lbs to go, that maybe 1 lb a week would be easier and all that is needed.

2400 calories, expected more exercise, managed time poorly. Also, I think we try to fit too much in.

Note

Didn't have daughter pick up, so made my best stab at budget used xc skis. Store #1, owned by an AR type, even had size 46 boots! And not a used ski in the store that would fit them. sad face Their new skis were in the "go see Hil" price range.

Store #2 had all manner of skis but boots for toddlers. My lack of xc ski binding familiarity prevents me from determining if boots from Store #1 would fit any skis at Store #2. Plus at that point I was barely going to have time to get a cup of soup and make band practice.

Hilary's suggestion to go up her way sounds great, but I don't think I have that chunk of time in the near future. :(

Very snowy jog out to the cemetery and back. This is pretty close:

2014 goals will sound familiar: Slim down, 60 mpw bike, 2x mpw on foot, some amount of rowing/paddling, 750 c.

Weight is somewhat depressing. Hopefully 200 is somewhat reachable roughly Cabin Fever time. Then 195 for Raccoongaine. Then 185 for the Fury, and finally 180 for WT. Took a selfie for reference and hopefully a nice A-B.
