Event: Spring Fury

4 AM

Orienteering 32:00 [3] *** 1.8 mi (17:47 / mi)
spiked:2/3c slept:4.0 shoes: Roclite #2

Spring Fury with Tizoc. Maria was out for work. Schedules conspired and we were never able to do any practice together, so hopefully he and I would get along together on the course. Distance/time estimates to be refined later.

Our strategy was to stay near the front and then pounce in the final o section, so we started jogging to CP1 with the top 6-7 teams or so.

We did not have a solid exit from the trail heading to CP2, and then did not locate the dry ground between hills, so we cut through the swamp. Here I noticed Tizoc runs through the woods at night faster than I can navigate, so I need to be more assertive in restraining amped-up teammates. :)

Thankfully the swamp still got us to the trail, right where everyone was picking it up at the bend. Then around to the boardwalk, where I had to check up Tizoc so we could punch it. Then off to the boat ramp a few teams back.

Canoeing 1:09:00 [3] *** 7.61 km (9:04 / km)
spiked:5/5c shoes: Pirate Canoe

Followed glow sticks around the lake. Mostly were around Tony C, Chad V, and Scott E for this. And the White brothers hauled! They destroy on paddling legs.

I ran stern, mostly okay, occasionally distracted and veering. Tizoc navigated from the front and we tried to use cell towers for reference points.

Very cool to be paddling near the end of this leg when we could shut the lights off and still see well enough at dawn.
5 AM

Orienteering 42:00 [3] *** 2.0 mi (21:00 / mi)
spiked:3/3c shoes: Roclite #2

Exiting the boats we headed back to the boardwalk. We considered a swampy shortcut, but we were moving so well on the trail that we figured 6 mph > 1.5 even at 3x the distance penalty. This worked well - we saw MRA I heading back from #9, and then saw a lot of good people as we headed up the trail to leave for #10. Easily found the dry land between the swamps in daylight. Funny that!

Popped out at what we thought was the right spot for #10, no kayak, but we heard voices so we moved over a bit on the peninsula and found Boks. Tizoc gave me a tug to unstick me from the bog and get me swimming. That was a great AR swim distance for me - enough to be fun and not enough to be miserable.
7 AM

Biking 2:43:00 [3] 28.7 mi (10.6 mph)
spiked:7/8c shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

We jumped on our bikes eager to make a strong ride. And we rode strong. We saw MRA I up ahead in the distance after the single track, and then saw their bikes and them at #14. Game on!

We were excited, and banging off distances and directions.

Again we saw their bikes at 16, punched, and then it happened. We realized we had turned at 15 but not even thought to punch. No no no. Back we go.

On the ride of shame we waved to Tony and Mike. Hi guys. :( And Cooper and Michelle. "Interesting route choice!" said Coop. :( And Tony C and Chad and Scott. :(

2.8 miles extra each way. Not the worst place to ride, the gravel rolled alright and a little was paved. But it was at least a 25 minute problem, excluding the energy cost of an extra 5.6 miles. But, we decided to press on and hope for the best - we had two good navigators, so maybe the o section would play in our favor.

Lesson: Person without the map should have some pace/course notes going and be more aware. I was too lazy the night before to copy down the directions. "Nah, we'll be fine." Usually I can remember the course better - not sure why I failed there. Something to be more conscious of.

Pace fell after we got back to 16 again. I should have gotten Tizoc on tow a bit.
9 AM

Canoeing 2:29:00 [3] 12.0 mi (12:25 / mi)
shoes: Pirate Canoe

Holy crap, MRA I killed the paddle split. 22 minutes faster? Man!

I forget if we heard we were in 6th or 7th, but we figured we should just keep at it, and hope to do work on the o course.

Paddle was nice. I frequently grabbed water and doused myself to keep cool.

A few logistic improvements - I should have put my floppy hat in the paddle bag instead of leaving it in my truck - I got a bit of sun. And maybe sunscreen in the paddle bag. And I still need a better hydration/food plan for paddling.

But otherwise okay, no tips and we got around most of the logs alright. Especially okay given that the only other time Tizoc and I paddled together was earlier that day! And it was his first time with a kayak paddle (thanks, Barbara!).

12 PM

Biking 49:00 [3] 10.5 mi (12.9 mph)
shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

Bike sprint to the o course. Tizoc was a bit bike fatigued yet, so he tucked in the draft and we towed a bit on the gravel road, which worked great until I noted a collecting feature and he thought we would look at it more closely. He slowed and I didn't, and he forgot to let go. He was alright after the crash.

Last bike CP before the TA was interesting. I started to look at the lowest point, but Tizoc suggested going a little farther, and there it was. Quite swampy - when punching one of my legs went crotch deep which was unsuspected and a little creepy. I was able to pull myself out.

Orienteering 3:21:00 [3] *** 9.0 mi (22:20 / mi)
spiked:17/20c shoes: Inov8 Roclite 319

If there was ever a time to be on, it was now. This was our only chance at redemption.

We tried to jog as much as we could, but I was a little beat and hot, and Tizoc was struggling with cramping.

The pattern of points was devious - I could not figure out an easy clean sweep - mostly the decisions were around which to grab on the way out in the middle and which to save for the way back.

We went clockwise, mixing it up with the Greens, which was good because the trickier ones them being in the same area looking around is helpful. We were choosing different routes and ending up at the same time.

Gosh, Yankee was different. A month ago, visibility was enormous, and all terrain was easy to understand. With it greening up, it was much harder to see the shapes and understand.

Fortunately, still mostly okay. The more I practice, the luckier I get, and they were hung fair and in the right spots.

We had a big tactical decision as to which way to go around the lake, but Tizoc had run out of water and had used up my second bottle, so we hoped that we would find fisherpeople to give us some. It worked! A nice family topped off my spare bottle for him while I dunked my head in the lake.

I really started to drag, just fatigued in the last hour, but Tizoc was really keeping me up, especially when he was not cramping. I was a little worried about making the cut off, but we had already decided after the bike snafu that we would rather risk being overtime and DNFing than finish 7th with too few points to be at the top.

We were coming to the finish after our final point but hadn't seen anyone so our position was cemented...except we saw Michigan Adventure Racing and so we had to kick a bit. But that wore me out, so we walked when out of eyesight. Then Tizoc was back to high energy, so I grabbed his pack for a boost into the finish for the fastest O split, one of only three teams to clear the course.

I was surprised to hear we might be second, and then thrilled when it was finally confirmed. Woo hoo!

Very happy with the result - wished we could have not fouled up to give MRA I a better run, but lesson learned. Tizoc was a great teammate, 10/10 would race with again. Not bad for his 12 hour debut!

Dropping off the sewer bill. One wonders if community walkability would be enhanced by not needing to go 3200 m to get between places 500 m apart. But it does make for a sleepy back corner of the sub.

Isolated point that I probably could have done yesterday...visible from road but only if you were looking.

Meet notes:

At least with this facility, I should have applied earlier. While the 1-9 worked out better, a few other things suffered.

Despite my previous meets having a sum total of ~5 white course participants, today had more whitish type demand and with the venue change...and then loss of the eastern 1/3rd to construction, I lost some good white level stuff. I should have moved the start to the circle lot immediately south, which had better white loops. But since I was already behind on the permitting, I was trying to minimize change. Hopefully I didn't permanently deter a few whitish customers who had their hands full with the yellower points.

I should probably detail the registration process better for the next mass start - as, please check in by XX:XX, meet for briefing 5 minutes before. But with the small group and thankfully noting the time on the finish box after they left, it should be close enough.

Only 1.5 flag placements had any complaints.

Mary said it was not in the right one, no big deal, and then walked away. Wha?? When I streamered it, I walked to the two small erosion gullies approaching from the south, then went to the big one. Waller checked it, no complaints. When I dropped the flag I walked to it from the east, big one, two little ones. The only weird thing was the gps track shows my position as farther east than the circle, but this is a non lidar map and maybe a wee warped....also I see in setting the one on the peninsula the Garmin is showing considerable drift. (why?) So I figured map = master no worries. It would have been interesting to get more detail on her assessment.

The only one that I know was incorrectly clue sheeted was one where the triangle trail junction is not a triangle anymore, but it would be hard to screw up if you were there.

Someone asked about #10 red. It was certainly in the circle per gps, and hung high and in an open spot of that reentrant. And was vetted. So hopefully there abouts. I tried to be very fussy about where I was sitting relative to the ends of the spur and hill nearby.

#10 was too obvious of a skip. For any future goat events, I'll try to start planning earlier and make them less obvious, perhaps with outside paper course consultation.

And it turns out the biggest downside to a goat with a 53 minute winning time is that many of the finest control picker uppers are very understandably not always available to wait around 2.5 hours for the last score o person to trickle in. :) Rick and Dennis were superstars and picked up 18! of the 24. Awesome!!

Fastest on Red by weight.

1 - minor bobble leaving the start and then trying to get around the swamp, then it felt like I should follow the swamp more but I shouldn't have.
2 - Biggest oops. In hindsight, going up then turning left at the depression and following the dot ditch reentrant in would be better. Now sure why I drift so far east other than the running was easy. Then I passed by the circle, and someone thought the trail was a ride, then saw the swamp and "aw hell no" so I very slowly followed that black dot line back to the hill.
3 - pushed around a little by downed trees, then could not figure out which reentrant was which. Used the pine circle to check the right reentrant finally.
4. My favorite leg. That level of busyness suits me - enough to have something to work with, not so much you can't keep it together
5. Maybe on line was better, but I was on the ridge and saw the trail, so I used that and then all of the kids punching it to help.
6. Considered straight, but after #2 went with a solid trail based approach. Fun leg.
7. Exit imperfect, but fun to chase Wyatt and Barbra down the ridge/spur, then misjudged which trail, but figured it out. Didn't see 9, whoops.
8. Had been drifting right, so when I was at the bottom of the e marsh, I elected to check to my left to find the flag Mark had lowered.
9. Old familiar grounds, fun bit off the trail, nice woods
10. Slow mostly on bearing
11. Slow mostly on bearing
12. Impression was that I saw the flag too early, but I checked the code and let 'er rip
13. Initial impression was that trail was obvious, but I deferred climb and went north, hopped the fence, then ran over the hill (channeling Thierry's full speed no mistakes), short cut the swamp
F - Finishing kick through green stripe? Then I tripped when I busted out of the woods, but I had furious speed on the grass. Fast enough? Garmin claims I neared 14 mph (4:20 pace), have to see AP's take.

Still screwed up #3 on pickup! Same mistake too, missing north not finding the right reentrant, and then using the pine to adjust. The orange point on the hill was good fun, such nice woods there.

Brace prevent rolls, but makes my ankle roll inward a bit, which doesn't feel that great, maybe I can adjust it a little.

Note

Today's run gives some hope for a Clydesdale group award at my next running race. I could suffer up the hill and hold 8:00 for another mile in the 10K, I think, versus today. And I was 10 bpm less than the last ~5.7 mile race I did there, so there should be a little room for more power.

2013 results:

185-199 lbs (I'm over!) =

1. 6:48
2. 7:18
3. 8:40

200-219 lbs:

1. 7:05
2. 7:13
3. 7:59

Both are easier than running my age, which is 6:36 / 6:57 / 7:23. Fortunately 2012 looks similar, 8:00 nets hardware for big boned fellas.

vdot calculator says 7:15 pace should be possible from December's 5k, but I don't do enough miles so it becomes a bit of a crap shoot. :/

I should work up some sort of relationship so I can estimate performance better. If 10:30 pace is 135 bpm, and 8:00 pace is 165 bpm, what would that mean at ~175 for a 10k or 180 bpm for a 5k? Or I could just drop some faster miles in easier jogs and check out the HR I suppose.

vdot says I probably should get faster before I try a half - PR is 1:45, projected is 1:40...I would want to for sure beat 1:45 if I try again. A good friend's PR is like 1:43, so of course one aims to beat that.

Original plan was to bike up to Spring Mill Pond and bomb around with Cooper, but the weather was awful and I wimped out. Then it hailed shortly after the scheduled start, so I regretted my wimp out less.

Short ~0.1 mile walk, then about 3.5 mi @ 6 mph, then finished with 4 mph for the balance since I was quite warm.

Bash's brace suggestion inspired research, and a store near my office had another popular AP option for ankle sprains, so I used that while jogging. It was noticeable but not uncomfortable. Casual testing around the kitchen says it should fight against rolling it again.

Awesome course, just not fit enough. Ankle started rolling in pain en route to 3. Really had to concentrate on landing with it counter rolled. Big stuff up on 8, too low I think....twice. Ouch got ten minutes of error. Then clean but just not fast despite open high speed runner's course. Igor in 1:11??

1. Took road, I think the west trail would be better, but I left frantically. Used trail junction.
2. Look at me, I'm awesome
3 Look at me, I exit very poorly. And miscount spurs. I can pretend this was from intense ankle pain. It's not, but I could. I would later improve this, now to focus on a routine in the future (approaching control, refold, align compass lines to north lines (adjust bezel), point thumb line in intended direction)
4. Not sure of best line. Also Mike Ryan and I saw a turkey or a heron, hard to tell at speed.
5. I need to be marginally faster at these short legs
6. Up and over. Use the unmapped trail w of 5.
7. Didn't short cut enough, meh.
8 ARGH. Missed too low, twice. Should have gone on the ridge proper instead of skirting around it a little. Or climbed the tip top hill. I am pretty sure I saw a semi-hunting blind lower than the control above me on one of the two paces. Frustrating, F capitalized. Well, onward and upward
9. Wee bit of drift down the big spur. After punching I would focus on better exits.....
10. YEAH ROCK THAT OUT
11. BANG WATCH ME NOW
12. I dodged elevation.
13. HOOAH
14. YEAH
15. Maybe trail was faster but off trail was fun. Drifted around thicker bit, but not too worried. Probably should keep exits in check even when they are less crucial.
F. Average speed, 9.5 mph (thank you, downhill finish). I saw sub 5:00/mile.

I repeat myself, but I should really get into 10k/half shape so I could have the power and fitness to move on the ones when I can move.

Ankle only feels off at the extremes today. Maybe a light jog later, and then a timid red run? Eye on the prize for 5/31 but I don't want to miss the final AliC SMOC course!

Also, sketched up a possible Peach Mountain alternative for the Michigoat. So much easier than Highland... :)

Right, wrong, or otherwise, we went into the dirt road neighborhood. It's not too lumpy. There were discomfort free moments, and moments with a little ankle ache, but nothing sharp. Exuberant push off is not the order of the day right now. Tolerable, we'll see how this feels tomorrow.

Excellent course by Mike Keating at Yankee Springs.

My only quibble is that a flip map start with a skilled person starting immediately after gives them a heck of a clue what direction to go while they figure out the right direction. :)

1. Did well, stayed on compass, found the awesome creek, then around into the reentrant.
2. Crap exit, should have stayed more on line. Fun marsh to crash.
3. Crap exit again, saw the saddle between and picked the right one to go into.
4. Crap exit, but read terrain well and got back on. Hardest control to find?
5. A good exit? Wowser. My favorite leg. I decided to go up and over, eschewing either trail route. Easy to use last bowl/reentrant as AP and glide into the rentrant.
6 - ARGH. I hit the rockpile on the spur, and should have been easy peasy to hit, but I got sucked into the wrong reentrant, misread the hill, and hit the road. Where I rolled my ankle hard. Took another crack, nicked the circle but missed it again, relocated off the depression to the SW and walked on a bearing at it. Amateur hour! Five minute error. :(
7. Slooppy to trail, sloppy on trail, then good at the end when it mattered. Fun control!
8. Tempted to check out the cliff, but I was racin'. Saw it from the hill, which redeemed my route choice.
9. Fun leg, but I was getting tired, should have been faster. Nice woods east of the marsh.
10. Another great leg. Less great when I hopped a log, landed on my left foot, and rolled it again. Ouch! That made me cringe. And limp. Shoot, can I finish the course jogging? This hurts. Then, for good measure, wobbled it again.
11. Easy but cautious.
12. Crap exit, but a fast route even if too long.
13. Straight up, nice area.
F. Tried to hammer, but the Dow-Corning boys from Midland heard me crashing and just flew. I should have dug deeper, but their 10 m lead jumping to 20 m demoralized me a little, plus they were fresh off walking orange. Barbara says they are runners.

I had originally considered a short course afterwards, but I thought my ankle would appreciate rest.

Sweet Le Mans start then three points of any order bike o. Best route choices in the race. Paul deferred to me, so I plotted a route out around the hills to #2, then #1, then #3, and then out through #4.

I am pretty sure we were first to #2. Then we charged to #1, not too many teams there yet. Cooper said teams dispersed in every direction! I thought about shortcutting by the swamp, but it might be wet and the dog leg was fast.

Then over to the Cooper trail and almost missing the Cooper two track to #4 because of the photographers.

We arrived in first at #5, woo woo. Set hopefully a good pace on the portion of yellow. There was a mowed and well-worn xc running trail connecting 7 to the paved path, so we took that for speed.

We arrived at TA1/CP 8 in first.

Walking (Transition) 2:27 [0]

Tried to be quick, but Tizoc and Co. really swapped fast. I forgot the maps on the bike, but Barbara generously took my pack while I doubled back. +60 s?

Until the railroad bridge, a nice sleepy paddle. I wonder if portaging one of the corners would have been faster, but meh, all good.

Then after the train bridge, the deadfall made things tricky in a few spots. I would not be surprised to hear of tipping. Paul stayed calm and we stayed in the boat.

For one of the trees, we tried to go around on a tiny little channel, but grounded on some sand, so I jumped out and pushed around. Then Paul dropped the hammer and almost left without me. Water wasn't too bad for wading.

Arrived at TA2/10 in 2nd place.

Probably should have hit the lap button earlier. Took longer than 100 seconds to get the boats out and gear loaded onto the trailer.

Paul assumed control of the maps. He wisely used solid attacks generally from trails that were accurate. Insider knowledge may have been helpful knowing what most of the junctions should look like. :)

Paul also set a brisk pace. He's going to be a threat at SMOC here soon. He was cruising 8:00/mile on the trails. The AR vets were huffing along behind. "Does he ever slow? Guess not, better dig!" Good stuff.

First three were right on trail, then we got to the good stuff. Saw Tizoc leaving #14, so only a few minutes back. Nice woods to #15. To #16 yes there was green, but bearable....slow but not prickery. Impressively, Paul's bearing dropped us directly on the flag, super spike.

Then out to the Badlands. We went CCW. We could see footprints but no Tizoc. Definitely wet feet crossing the very full marsh that bisects the area.

Finished 2nd overall, first four person coed. Woo woo. Nice team chemistry.

Out to Waterloo HQ for a no flag red run.

1 - 2:40 (12) nearly overshot, didn't see the probably easier road line.
2 - 7:08 (9) also did not see the road line. Also could not tell which. Had there been a flag, having checked all of them, I would've been out faster I think. EDIT: Bugger, I see I was short of the target on the QR. :(
3 - 4:05 (8) Holy cow this is not a strong start.
4 - 2:30 (9) why am I so bad
5 - 4:58 (4) I still need to figure out the ridge after ridge contour shapes. Also I drifted a bit west, but not too bad.
6. - 3:03 (3) I should have been faster, didn't realize I knew the spot and should have hammered over
7 - 3:32 (5) Needed a flag here. I have trouble deciding what the knoll is unless it's super pronounced.
8 - 7:41 (6) I thought I did alright, until the end, hit the right ditch, thought it was the one before, caught by the green to double back.
9 - 6:41 (4) Some meandering switching routes. Probably should have toughed out the straight bit, but kept drifting for easier running. Putting a control in one of the more subtle depressions here would be an interesting leg
10 - 4:33 (6) Again with the knolls. What was it here?
11 - 6:10 (6) Just slow, I hope I went through the right one. It seemed close enough, and I was running out of time. :/ EDIT: Not the right one. I thought I was slightly west of that open area, whoops. :(
12 - 5:07 (4) Lots of switching of routes. First I thought road, then powerline looked okay, then not okay, then okay, then the marsh looked deep....
13 - 3:58 (5) Not much too it, just not fast enough
14 - 9:24 (5) Felt okay about it until I saw that I last 3! minutes to the fastest split. Maybe better to go up the road for the trail? I was slow through the light green.
F - 3:27 (1) FTMFW. Probably should have been straighter, but I got a nice bit on the road that approached 10 mph. Training Center says 10.5 mph max, woo woo. It feels like flying and I love it.

1:15:04 (4***) <--- not sure how long to fix #2 and #11.....
