This is almost, but not quite, the longest I think you can do in this space without crossing or repeating. I missed the obvious bump out on the way out since I hadn't decided what I would do.

Seems either operator error or the USB at the hotel was less powered than I thought. Mapmyrun once I realized it.

Dropped off sick wife back at the hotel, then, for the first time in all of my years (that I can remember), I biked from Lake Geneva to Genoa City. I kick myself for not doing this throughout high school; I would have been a fit beast.

Hung up mini disco balls for night o markers at the controls specified below:

60 40 41 61 72
50 33 51 57 59
42 58 55

Likely to be removed by w4j and mm on their outing, so go soon or make arrangements!

Experimented with swamp crossings I hadn't tried before. Feet were a bit cold when I got home, but otherwise no harm done.

Unfortunately I played with the disco balls in my yard and they are maybe slightly less visible than is desirable.....oh well, just needs more skill.

Also my knot skills are weak, so check the ground if you think you are in the right place.

Spare maps available for pickup from my crib with notification.

I wish I could do this sort of thing faster. Maybe I need more terrain running practice; I shuffle along so lazily when running that high stepping over logs is draining.

ahr:86 max:118 shoes: Pirate Canoe

Mostly leisurely paddle up the Huron from Riverbend to the dam.

Those familiar with going upstream to the dam will note that it is not leisurely in the final approach to the dam, and it is all you can do to paddle against the current. If racing, I think it's faster to take out a few hundred yards downstream, and try to portage on the very small ridge.

Rick's son Dale ran a SUP up and down. In jeans and steel toe boots. No troubles! Also, no ear covering. Kids and their heat generation.

Water was down a full foot from our last outing!

We saw several others taking advantage of the nice conditions - a couple running down and up, a MCRA solo guy running up, and ~four short kayaks headed down from the fishing spot.

Note

It's a good thing SMOC's non profit, as my winter event was very non profitable! I've come close to break even before, but this one set new standards for red ink. All the more incentive to draw out more folks!

Running 55:39 intensity: (8 @0) + (27:24 @1) + (18:55 @2) + (6:24 @3) + (2:45 @4) + (3 @5) 5.29 mi (10:31 / mi) +17m 10:25 / mi
ahr:141 max:179 shoes: Brooks Ghost 5s

Snuck this in under the 17th. Felt colder than I would guess from the numbers.

Totally blew my 2014 bike target, but if I can average 3 miles per day until year's end, I can crack 1000 on my feet, woo woo.

Note

Oakland University looks like a sprint candidate. Some buildings, some woods (with a creek!) and the perimeter of the campus is over six miles.

One of my immediate coworkers is taking classes currently, may be able to help get permissions process started.

Note

I was trolling Big Lots, stumbled onto a 20 pack of disco ball ornaments for $6, so those will appear in a woods near you for night o training.

I was working on talking myself into or out of the Navigator Cup, then I winged the map on over here:

https://www.google.com/maps/@33.8178516,-85.568104...

and that looked like craziness that would be fun to run around. (Talladega National Forest).

A decent warmup. Soon squandered!

Walking 10:00 [1] 0.64 mi (15:37 / mi)

Debating one last pit stop. Then back. Then back again.

ahr:169 max:227 slept:7.0 weight:204.6lbs shoes: Brooks Ghost 5s

I had a perfectly prepared warmup, then the start was delayed thirty minutes to accommodate late arrivals. Grrr.

So I chatted with longtime AR friend Pam Bower, who was waiting for the 10k start.

I had a much more restrained opening. I was good through the middle, a few people starting to fall off. I tried to reel in a couple after 2.5 but I was hurting and fading.

Then my killer instinct failed me. I closed on the 2nd place female. She turned the second to last corner...and started walking.

I yelled, "c'mon, you got this. GO!"

She gave me a whuh? look and then freaking threw down like 5:30 pace to edge me out.

I am encouraged by what this time could mean for the spring with more consistent running over the winter.

Festively bringing it home

Note

Oddly I haven't obsessed much over tomorrow's 5K. Perhaps because it was assumed to be out the window until we stumbled upon its phoenix-like rebirth from the ashes of "this race is over!" by the former RD, perhaps because of afterglow from my glorious victory...

anyway, plan is simple:

Open no faster than 6:50, including the first quarter (unlike last year!)
Try to do another 6:50
Try to do that again
Last 0.1 sub 6.

Then PR in the spring.

Did not have nearly enough time between work and practice to bike over. Next best thing: jog Yellow from the carpool lot. I had the park to myself!

Note

Considering a small project:

Overlay yesterday's map in Google earth, pick off GPS coordinates for the controls + start/finish, then using the time stamps and control order from Or, make up psuedo gpx files for some/all participants. Then you don't get actual routes, but can at least see general people movement, and compare the differences.

Note

FB spoiler alert. Purple Pen distances for some routes:

Voit's route: 16.9 km
Eaton's: 16.9 km
Wonderful's: 16.3 km

So they quickly determined efficient routes, especially since both showed up after map delivery. Starts were the same, then they split up after Halfmoon Lake, then converged again around 60 and back through the 3 * 30 in the SE.

Biggest difference w/ mine is I did 45 early. I had the benefit of a lot more time, and even still my first draft pushed towards 18 km until I switched to 72-61 around the south end of the swamp.

73 was originally a bit more north, but then it seemed to make a boring road run too viable.

Outstanding control pickup team took care of nearly everything, except a minor parallel bobble at 50 so I parked at a boat launch and grabbed that. Garmin or AP is hosing me on climb; it was more than six feet!

Orienteering 24:21 intensity: (2 @0) + (10:47 @1) + (9:51 @2) + (3:41 @3) *** 1.91 mi (12:45 / mi) +13m 12:29 / mi

I forgot to give someone 58! And it's in the middle of bloody nowhere, so it took a while to retrieve. I was going to take Igor's Pickerel swamp short cut on the way back, but it was near an occupied hunting stand, plus then I sort of went at it and it was pretty soft.

Back on the board!

Garmin only thinks ~15 miles.

2.5 mistakes - both full mistakes were while wandering aimlessly on paths, the other was a big bobble with lazy compass and lazy ridge following.

I wish I could set faster. I should have staged backpacks to improve runnability over the duffle.

I started to panic and zip tied everything. Visibility is so high and many are not exactly tucked away. Here's to remembering knives for the control pickers.

Note

Pre registered sticks assigned, cleared, checked, and bagged
Pre registered folks into Or
Scoring verified and checked in Or (after I fixed a wrong control number)
Controls (plus two finishes) synced, official time is just slower than Sprint iPhone time, perfect for starting the race approximately right.
Controls mostly sorted for setting
Hopefully I don't forget a stake for the one control where I can't remember if there are any trees or not
