Event: SMOC Chilson

Prepping the house is every bit the misery I worried it would be.

On the upside, great course and run today at Chilson. If I heard correctly in my foggy state, seven seconds ahead of Igor...which means possibly stolen in the finish chute. Hooray for big tapers. Given the light attendance, that might be good enough for the win. Felt bad ditching on control pickup, but back to work.

Note

It's a trifle crude but should work. Maybe we'll offset that with a fancier breakfast.

Nitrogaine registration open!

Currently about 50 c, 44 km. New map looks great.

Note

Facebook likes now official doubled since the start of our campaign. We had about 340 prior, now above 680.

However, now that I look at participation, it's only up 10%, 60 versus 54 over last spring. 30% up total, but that's with an extra meet. But even 6 people at $5 covers the $30/week advertising, and maybe are some in the $10 range, so potentially 60.

Oddly, spring 2014 did well. Compared instead to fall 2014, this spring has been a quite large improvement, up from ~36 average ish.

All numbers are not scientific, since some meets pin punch white, etc. Also, there are a number of variables not factored in - my meet had potentially crap weather and was on some college graduation days, some meets are or are not on during U of M football, etc.

Great Crooked Lake course by the maestro of route choice. Even at sluggish post heat exhaustion type pace, I still had to be on my toes.

1. Checked a white point on the way! What was I thinking
2. Almost pushed myself left of the correct spur
3. To the trail junction, didn't see the faint trail, bearing
4. Very slow and cautious, didn't find runnable meadow so I went up and around
5. Was exit to left of gravel pit faster? To the right on my line was crazy slow. Stopped for a drink and Elena guided me to the control.
6. Need to qr - found an indistinct trail, may have bobbled around a bit.
7. An...um...intentional detour, then Elena again
8. Went around the depression via the road. Saw Shane.
9. Considered road north then due east, but I wasn't moving quickly so I went back the way I came. Then almost missed on swamp high - I had trouble settling into the scale - some things came up way fast, others took forever.
10. On line to the swamp, then said screw it and stayed on line through the marsh. Easy going at walking pace.
11. Oops, let guard down, ended up on horse trail, but maybe not too bad. Then a little sloppy on turn in, but checked up and saw it to my right as I headed north.
12. Here this one came up faster than I expected, but maybe I rounded off more of the swamp.
13. Stayed right (crossed bridge, trail to road). Slightly confused as to what I did, as I thought I picked off the small round swamp, but then came to the SW end of the small round swamp. Kind of messy, I wonder if left had better runnabilty. Shane again.
14 My single biggest error, behind Shane we both thought we turned in correctly, and climbed hills, but ended up on the really bit double bump hill. Easily corrected, just lost time and energy.
15. Along the ridge. Wish I was running fast. :(
F. Chugged in.

Interesting features - you could use erosion gully erosion gully between and have it be end to end rather than side by side.

Uncrossable swamp crossing shenanigans. Maybe I should not do this with an uncovered phone, but I live on the edge. I cannot deny my nature.

Walking 9:00 [3] 1.5 mi (6:00 / mi)

Lawn care.

For redemption of yesterday's imperfections, I sketched up more sensible courses for a potential fall meet, assuming I can get permitted for the non standard start.

Dropped off the W & Y, streamered a little bit of trail for W, and the F.

Broke several of my guidelines, regret doing so (course length, insufficient scouting). Survived less than thrived. Finally fouled up my first control number. :( Props to BNM for knowing she was right and my sheets were wrong!

One wonders about a Y+ or O- option. Take someone like Angel Simpson - way fast for an easy yellow, but she might be punished by Orange as she develops her skills. That is a big gap from "visible from trail" to "out on a big feature". Maybe something where the AP is visible from the trail, but the flag isn't necessary - eg, big hill next to trail, then on backside, or at bottom of bending reentrant that contacts trail. Then with some tempting shortcuts.

Or maybe offer "Orange with course notes" - a strategy guide of suggested routes/aps/handrails/etc.

Summer punch stick project?

http://smile.amazon.com/Plastic-Toggle-Spring-Sing...

^ string cinches, <$.20/piece

http://smile.amazon.com/Mandala-Crafts%C2%AE-Elast...

^ hot pink elastic cord, 70 meters ~10. Even at a half meter per (seems like a lot), that's 140 sticks.

Plus the pink should be more visible if someone still manages to drop one.

Ah....pre hosting jitters.

When you are sure there's not enough route choice on any of the legs, when you are sure the R & G aren't technical enough but are way too hilly, when you are sure Orange is too physical and waaaaay too long, and maybe Y and W aren't that great....

Got confused by some bandit trails and proudly hung a flag at one of the few unstreamered locations, walked up out of the feature, and where the heck? Didn't quite account for scale. New spot is better I think anyways. Must. Always. Scout.

Wonder if we need:

http://smile.amazon.com/Digits-Numbers-Luggage-Com...

or similar for the white/yellow flags. Could procure something and set up say, 10 flags earmarked for high vis points to prevent...migration.

Sure helps to have hosted here twice. Hammer down until overheating at Huron Meadows. Almost overran #1, thanks Melissa. Probably should have gone straighter to #9. By post race stories, I had the luckiest route to #14.

Walking 15:00 [3] 0.75 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Roclite #2

Surveyed the damage caused by a vandal or drunk. Seems someone drove into or through several of the chain link fences in our sub.

Walking 1:30:00 [3] 1.5 mi (1:00:00 / mi)
shoes: Roclite #2

Trimmed, edged, and mowed. It was like a Hanukkah miracle - with only 2/3rds of the gasoline needed to mow my lawn, it lasted the entirety.
