Harvey chose to walk back, which is cool....figuratively and literally, because at his pace I don't generate as much heat.

Okay, that was a little brisk in the thigh area. I'll have to look at double layering. It was fine at 7 or 8 with similar other items (parka w/ hood, furry gloves, wool socks), but not today at 3. Harvey seemed fine, and was toasty when I got him out. He wore a coat and snowpants, and I put a warmed-in-the-house blanket below, and another warm blanket above him, so little airflow.

12 deg but with parka and gloves and hiking socks and jeans I was roasting on the speed walk to arrive on time. bare hand on the way back was fine since core was throwing off so many btus. Other than not wearing studs and so much hidden ice on the route I chose for the return, so glad I did not wipe out but some close calls.

Seems like I will take some notes on our camping successes and failures in order to improve for next time.

I think the biggest issue was I briefly gave Ed a false sense of my preparedness, so we both winged it a bit too much.

For example, I had my micro backpacking stove and fuel, and no ignition means.

Ed had his self igniting camping stove and no fuel.

Thankfully, Alswede is not an idiot and gave us a pack of matches. :)

I also ended up bringing way too much junk I never touched, and then a couple items I left behind might have been nice.

We didn't freeze to death or get too wet so all's well that ends well, plus more memorable than a Holiday Inn Express.

Extreme O!

Ed and I walked the short course. We knew short from before we started, owing to the long drive back.

We started with a compass and bearing to the platform, then headed off on shaded relief. I should have asked for clues as we ended up on the wrong side of the huge ditch and had to get wet feet and scramble. Sorry Ed.

Then it was on to a 1:5 with several blank sections. I think the people in front of us made an error turning too early on the wrong little stream. We did pretty well, and Ed figured out a blanked out area had a trail right to the second to last, so we made good time for walking.

Then it was a written instruction to follow some powerlines, where we caught up to some of the fitter younger teams, which was nice. Then some satellite for a bit, before the long/short split. We stuck with short, as it was taking even longer than planned.

USGS here, which is nicely fair, so you can sort of eyeball, like "there are only two hills, and it's 35 = 1/3rd and 4/5 = 1/2 of the way through the square so this one.

Then a little bit of math from an information sign to get a direction to head on a trail, then a rope scramble up a steep bank, then a park map to.....

Possum toss! Four tennis balls, 10' or so, get one ball through one of the possum face cut outs (think photo board). I was close but missed three times before clutching the fourth. Only other team to be successful was Peng's friend JieYi, who got it on the third try, citing her basketball experience.

Then a quick 5 or so on 1:10 back to the S/F, including one wet foot under the bridge, before the giant flag and done.

Quick shower and a 12 hour race back to Michigan, successfully with no tickets!

Now a longer blue! It started with a long uphill climb. As I neared the top, I heard a distressful noise. Some disturbed sort of wailing. Was someone injured? They weren't blowing their whistle. I couldn't make out any words. Should I investigate?

I ultimately decided someone was running hounds, phew.

I continued about, trying to avoid climb when I could. I have been on this map...and lost..before...so I used caution in the downslope of fanning spurs with and without creeks. Peng used less caution so I caught him at #4.

#8 shows an error, but really it's because it's a 4 index * 5 contours/index * 5 meters per contour = 100 m climb up a spur. Eventually I realized this was their main trick - have you climb to get tired, then send you across the spurs, then send you back down so you make a tired overspeed error in the parallel spur confusion.

I got enough back to edge out Peng for SMOC Blue bragging rights on the combined, but not enough to whittle back Minto's massive Saturday lead.

Fun stuff, but maybe Red is enough unless I were to get in mega running shape.

I was able to shuffle a little bit for the first hour, then ran out of run power and then Minto passed me, which was sad as he was 8 minutes behind. The final hills were tough and I almost miss punched as I got to a cliff in the right reentrant, failing to notice it was 2 m instead of 1 m, but did notice the wrong number. Spot check of bearings to things seemed plausible, but then decided to push a bit more up the reentrant and saw the next line of cliffs. I should bring a magnifier for 1:15!

Fun sprint. Nice map and campus. I can tell I don't sprint enough as I thought I would be fenced out and wasn't, so the next time I tried to go straighter and got walled out, haha. Not enough top end to mix it up in the ranks.

Not that bad for 8 degrees.

I had Harvey wear snow pants, boots, and a coat over a hoodie, and kept the blanket indoors. He said his fingers were a little cold over our 11 minutes journey; also he doesn't wear gloves nor keep hands near his body or in pockets.

18 degrees + backing up carelessly = not a great start. At least it happened after drop off. I haven't found a source for just this part, which then gets silly buying an entire arm to replace it. I wish I was handier; I'd whip one up in stainless and be done.

3 PM

Walking 20:06 [1] 1.36 mi (14:47 / mi) +1m 14:44 / mi

Pushed the stroller with the front wheel in place of the bar.

I ordered the replacement. Shipping is generically listed as "ground" and probably subject to, whenever an employee bothers to wander somewhere to grab it and ship it...so biking might be a few days out.

If we were not in this hectic life phase, it might be interesting to fab up some other options. Easiest might be a wood ball, easy to drill and run a screw in, then do likewise on the in-arm part, and probably holds up well enough for neighborhood use. Most elegant might be some sort of stainless job coated plastic-dipped on the ball end. Could even notch it to make a fuse again, and then make the fused part easy to replace in case of damage.

In hindsight I should have ordered additional ones.

Also I wish I knew how to build wheels, as I'd troll for another one of these and then put fat tires on the bike, there has got to be clearance for at least 4" tires.

Ultra light powder slowing falling, which made things a little more cautious since that on ice is slick.

Might put studs on the free bike since orange bike is still out of commission, then pull with the redline cx bike on nicer days, I think that would work.

Meant otherwise, but at least it was a nice day for a walk, and only like two sidewalks were icy garbage. See yellow asterisk:

Time to try a new battery in the old heart rate strap. Numbers are from Apple Watch instead of the 50 bpm average.

That was colder and harder than I thought. Also, my apparel is not dialed in. But I am trying a new-to-us experimental dish, so I thought I should anchor it with Tier 1 bread (Great Harvest garlic cheddar) to appease my customers.

Cold wasn't bad. Studs would have been nice, but I seem to have either buggered the threads on the orange bike, or have the wrong nut for it. Fingers crossed a semi local shop carries those....

Note

In for GNC. Sunday WRE is too long for me, so trying regular blues, I think I can shuffle through in the limit.

Driving down w/ Ed after being scared by a security line pic of ATL. He's in for co-op Extreme O short course, should be a good time. We haven't gone together in forever. He has FAR more raw talent than I ever had, would be fun to see him pick up the sport if he was ever interested enough to do so.
