Orienteering race 1:48:00 [4] *** 8.0 km (13:30 / km)
spiked:10/16c
1: I won a leg! Visibility was really great today
2: I cut back to the trail - doesn't look like much time lost. Miscounted reentrants, but it was mostly where expected
3: If there's a point in a ditch collection in Peach Mountain, it will confuse me. I was probably close on the first pass. Stupid screenless GPS logger wouldn't fire up. It was freshly charged. Why???
4: Not bad, just slow
5: Mostly followed a bearing and rolled with the terrain
6: Had a great line, probably saw the log on the first pass, but didn't register. Overshot, which was thorny, then hit the trail. Came back via the small depression, lots of thorny fight, realized it must be slightly west. Very tricky for me - probably 6-8 minutes lost here - that's most of the gap to third!
7: Ragged from the #6 hunt, it took too stupid long. I should've went with a little more compass, then I misread all the valleys in the area a bit. Sigh
8: I wonder if it wouldn't have been faster to take the turn right at the trail junction near 7, then go up to that road - there's almost no elevation change, versus the trail I took which was all elevation change.
9: Easy enough to read these features - up to the trail, contour a bit up to the trail, then drop down.
10: Approach from trail near dish was easier (on control pickup!) but I tried to go more direct, and just counted off reentrants.
11: Stupid botch. Went up to 13, which was fine, but then went out one high point to the west, so I ended up at the evergreen line and was going to cut back to the trail to the east to relocate when I found some features and cut back up hill. On control pick up, it was a three minute leg instead of 9!
12. I should've cut directly, but the hill scared me so I tried to take the trails, naturally missed the same one I missed last time! Then took the next trail north to the bend, and cut up hill. Spectacular visibility!
13. Cut to the trail, then came off the flat high part, counted off reentrants, not much trouble.
14. Andrew shows his speed, as he pipped me by 30 seconds on this long leg. I took the trail by the dish, then took the due south trail, then cut down and was able to read features to it. Slightly misjudged location, but easily found the right reentrant and went back up a bit.
15. Hard to see here. I was too far down the first pass, then mucked about in the odd plants until Alan came through. Then I was going to relocate from the trail, but decided I could try a high line, recognized the upper part of the reentrant, and cut back down, right as Alan also spotted it.
16. At least competitive. Not sure if trail was faster - I thought it would be more fun to slide down the gravel pit ridge. Was slightly north of my expectation.
F. My trademark sprint to the end, in the hopes of winning at least one leg. Success!
