2013 Rage training starts today!

Service drive up to Island Lake, night single track until the bridge on yellow, where visibility was getting really good, brief snack stop in the parking lot, then blue out through the Badlands, but over to Rushton and then 8 Mile to 7 back to the house. Just squeezed it in before needing to get dear daughter up for her practice. I need to be more efficient about departure

45 deg @ start. I wore a light head sock until the trailhead parking lot, otherwise typical - wool socks, bike shorts, long sleeve wicking shirt. Toes were cold.

1 PM

Orienteering (Trainer) 2:00:00 [1] ** 4.1 km (29:16 / km)
spiked:8/8c slept:7.0 shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Another training session at Pontiac Lake. This guy seemed pretty comfortable off trail, so we warmed up with Y1, and jumped onto R2, R3, O1, RB, RC, Y2, and Y6.

It actually turned out to be a great exercise for me, as he hadn't had a chance for his permanent map to show up, so we'd go along with him holding my map, then he'd stop and ask where he was, so I got excellent relocation practice.

Note

Not many seemed interested in the SMOC intro to orienteering lessons during the summer, when scheduling was trivial, but now with the school year ramping up, suddenly there's lot of interest. Which is encouraging. Hopefully we can get it all to work out.

Note

I ordered some flags to use for training purposes. Cooper - game on!!

Biking (Mix) 38:44 intensity: (23:13 @0) + (12:38 @1) + (2:53 @2) 10.0 mi (15.5 mph) +16m

I was sluggish getting going (Dog #1 tried to wake me at 4...and did!), so I just went around Horseshoe Lake to the south with a couple bump outs on the way back.

RE: The Adventure Rage - I must steal Oleg's quote - he says it best. "All mistakes - incorrect reading of the terrain relief."

1 AM

Canoeing race 4:05:00 [3] * 21.0 mi (11:40 / mi)
spiked:1/1c

I got very nervous about cut off times. Race director thought we had enough at the time we put in, but it was going to be tight. We put out and tried to grind, but we only had so much speed.

Visibility was challenging - mist reflected our mega lights back in our faces. Also, getting sleepy, I kept seeing dogs and racoons in every plant or tree branch.

At the sole checkpoint, we met one team who had pulled out to warm up. They found the crude bathroom was 10 degrees warmer than the ambient, so they huddled in there.

We got very demoralized near the end. The natives feared we had overshot the take out. I checked the map, and we saw that a railroad bridge was just before the take out, and we did not have much time left to avoid a short course, so we paddled for all we were worth once we saw it, and got grace on the cut off.

5 AM

Biking (Bike walking) 4:15:00 [3] *** 14.0 mi (3.3 mph)
spiked:3/4c shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

I'm not sure if I should book the training against my bike or my shoes, since I spent so much time lifting the bike over logs or pushing it through sand so soft it's more suited for beach volleyball than roadbuilding. Brutal, just brutal. Oddly, we caught up to a few teams on the first point of this leg.

The major nav difficulty in this section was determing what two tracks, trails and roads were on the map, and which workn't. Many incorrect tracks go more or less in the way your compass hopes.

9 AM

Orienteering race 2:48:00 [3] *** 12.0 mi (14:00 / mi)
spiked:0/4c shoes: INOV8 285

My biggest tactical mistakes were made here.

1. In order to be a ranked team, we could have just biked in from CP 24 to the finish, completing none of the trek. This would have been SMART, and locked in our results, rather than throwing them to chance.

2. I completely misjudged the time and distance to cover the distance from CP 24 to Caberfae.

Since we had the option to collect a point or two to bump up our ranking, my hubris yelled, "YES!" And both of our keysters saw the prospect of no biking, and said, "YES!" Huge mistake - it would've been better to lock in our position.

BUT if I could read a topographical map, I would've been abele to get a point, and maybe not show up late. Six months of training and prep, all thrown out, because I could call enough enough and take what I had. No, I had to be greedy. ARGH ARGH ARGH

Jeff make a Herculean effort to propel his exhausted body to the finish line, but the road was just too long. ARGH

Distance estimated from pacemaker.

Note

I haven't slept yet after the race (trying to keep schedule semi normal), and I keep blinking and see really odd things when I type. Probably a smart move to stay here tonight than try to drive back.
