I took the long way home from Ed's, which was maybe not the best idea on a school night.

Bum a little tired of the bike seat at ~19 miles. Hopefully the Rage is broken up a little.

Or somewhere thereabouts.

Biking (Mostly paved) 1:33:27 intensity: (36:39 @0) + (44:57 @1) + (9:25 @2) + (2:26 @3) 20.02 mi (12.9 mph) +39m

I have been neglecting the bike so I thought I would bike to Ed's to borrow his bike light.

Now that Ed's buying a house in Superior Township, I discover that you can finally get from 8.5 & Dixboro in South Lyon to his place in Commerce Township 100% on rail trail. Granted, some of that rail trail is sketchy, nearly single track in spots, covered in glass for 30 meters in Wixom, and very slow riding loose gravel for a mile or two at the end. But, cool. It would be a racetrack if paved.

Note

Woods look nice here, but the lot isn't very big.

~65 acres including other U of M parcel to the north.
7 PM

Walking 46:11 [0] 2.25 mi (20:32 / mi) +4m 20:25 / mi

Spousal walk with 10 lbs kitty litter & shovel handle to ward off unleashed dogs.

Biking 28:01 intensity: (1:34 @0) + (5:18 @1) + (11:39 @2) + (8:59 @3) + (31 @4) 7.46 mi (16.0 mph) +43m

Hammered to make up time, but went out too fast and faded. I think the place to make up time is the sandy bike push hill climb, not in my subdivision. Headache began shortly after takeoff and raged into well into the next session.
6 PM

Biking 1:24:31 intensity: (42:46 @0) + (24:49 @1) + (14:13 @2) + (2:43 @3) 14.9 mi (10.6 mph) +63m
ahr:123 max:160 shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

Badlands, much of Blue, and some lessons from Wyatt on pacelines.

Slower average pace in part as we stopped to judge Barbara's spectacular over the bars crash on her nemesis, a sandy Badlands reentrant along a ridge. I paced it out - 3.5 feet from where her front wheel stopped until the pile of Barbara - nothing in between but unblemished sand. I need to ride with a GoPro.
7 PM

Walking 1:13:12 intensity: (1:10:59 @0) + (1:04 @1) + (50 @2) + (19 @3) 4.6 mi (15:55 / mi) +80m 15:06 / mi
ahr:102 max:153 shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Flat hike around the Badlands. My Cascadias are too small. :(
9 PM

Biking 35:41 intensity: (11:24 @0) + (13:06 @1) + (10:19 @2) + (52 @3) 7.77 mi (13.1 mph) +50m
ahr:129 max:154 shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

Leisurely bike home. Pleasantly cool, very refreshing.

Amateur hour. Lost minute on #2, then 8.5 minutes on 75 second leg to three. Misread ponds and went on west side instead of east. ARGH.

Gave up big start time lead on Alex, caught him at 6, together through 11, other than two minute error to wrong island at 8 - just didn't check my compass and misread marshes. Hoped he would fade, and looked like he was falling off at 12 so I pressed. Clean until 16, too many spurs. Igor wins by five. Always a bridesmaid.

QR, warts and all:

3 PM

Orienteering (control pickup) 25:35 intensity: (25:00 @0) + (35 @1) *** 1.07 mi (23:55 / mi) +12m 23:06 / mi
ahr:103 max:132 spiked:4/4c shoes: Inov8 Roclite 319

Simple compass and pace to #3 would've saved many, many minutes.

Note

Crooked Lake strikes again - my truck is at Shane's. It wouldn't cool down. Who knows how much I bent the engine as I tried to eek out a few hundred more yards on each run up to 260°F. Then my family picked me up and complained that I smelled. I ran through a swamp! That's why I drove the truck!
