Note

After seeing some low blood sugar rage from a wife who thought she might eat before 7 pm, one wonders how to encourage folks to come back earlier, so that one doesn't pick up the last flag at 5:50 pm. The official policy seems to be 12-3, at least on the website.

Viewing the real times, three people finished after 3:30 on red (one nearly at 5!). 50% of the people who did finish green finished after 3:30. Yellow and Orange weren't so bad; most of the finishers are at least around 3.

Maybe the trick is to have a more o-interval style course, so you can do a rolling set of picks earlier while people are still out. We had one juicy clump with the 2nd to last red point in it, so we waited a bit.

Or put the "After 3:00 pm? Head back!" on the map at key points.

Or maybe we should just say, for realz, pulling flags at 3:30, if you aren't back by then, please just come back, we have families, and you won't find any flags anyway. Or "unless you have explicit clearance, bail out at 3:XX." Then you still can let reliable flag picker uppers start late.
9 AM

Running 2:52 [1] 0.34 mi (8:26 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 319

Ran start punch up for Mark's pre run. He had a 5 meter penalty since I held it in a different spot than Mike set up his table.

Running 2:52 [1] 0.34 mi (8:26 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 319

And back to the registration table.
10 AM

Biking 12:00 [1] 1.8 mi (9.0 mph)
shoes: The General

Various trips with and without trailer from registration to the start.
3 PM

Orienteering 45:42 [2] *** 2.55 mi (17:55 / mi) +104m 15:54 / mi
spiked:6/6c shoes: Inov8 Roclite 319

Very nice set of controls from red and orange. And the terrain made sense. It helps that I had no pressure and had visited most spots. And it was the second nicest set of terrain on that map.

Probably could have gone faster if I didn't get a dozen phone calls about lost car keys, people getting or not getting rides to A2, and people not back yet.
5 PM

Biking 7:29 [1] 0.67 mi (5.4 mph) +1m
shoes: The General

Bike out to pick up the last two controls. Stashed bike at a bathroom and hoped the horse peeps weren't around.

Orienteering 9:57 [2] *** 0.61 mi (16:20 / mi) +2m 16:10 / mi
spiked:2/2c shoes: Inov8 Roclite 319

#5 red was much easier from the north. Just get to the hill, and string the clearings together. Also picked up the other water control.
6 PM

Biking 7:29 [1] 0.67 mi (5.4 mph) +1m
shoes: The General

Bike back to the car.

Note

Had dear daughter time sync all the controls we are using. I might hold #46 back to finish getting it set up, then hang it Saturday. The new flags are so crisp and fresh!

Note

Also, the other day I saw Island Lake's bobcat tree grinder, which looks like this rather than the brush hog style. It was over by where the powerline crosses the rail trail on the east side.

Should be a great section of the course. Hopefully Tony can find 'em all!

Paddling in the canoe with Jeff while Cooper paddled his kayak. Jeff and I tried to focus on technique based on some article he read. It was working; we traveled at a good rate for us without much effort.

Then hammered for home at 96. I wish I could do the last bit for about 90 minutes instead of 9 minutes; we'd terrorize the short races.

I think Lew messed up when setting the course, because it seemed like there were accidentally two or three sections with enjoyable, runnable woods.

1 - fine
2 - don't know why I checked wrong reentrant before crossing trail, whoops
3 - Should have gone north of swamp at road. Looked up correct reentrant but didn't see it, then doubled back for it
4 - Ugh, slow going
5 - Executed well
6 - Criminy, that swamp is not crossable there! I bailed when I got crotch deep. :| Then when I finally got there, I stupidly looked for a reentrant instead of hilltop, Hilary straightened me out
7 - Probably my best route choice of the day, longer but more runnable and a more reliable attack
8 - ARGH, misread the unreadable thick vegetation covered contours, drifted north and recognized nothing, finally figured it out up at the number 10, so I bailed to fix. Damn near missed it with bearing, as veg was thick.
10 - Okay with this, probably faster to go straighter
11 - Verified the one thing just to be safe
12 - ARGH, bobbled an easy one, but at least caught it right on time
13 - Finally, dark green that was more runnable than the light green
F - not much in the tank. :|

Picking up a few very easy controls.
