Leisurely ride with dear brother. He hasn't been on a bike since July, so his lungs were confused. Still made it to our target, Hebron, Illinois, home to a Hoosier-esque winning of the 1952 Illinois High School Basketball tournament, despite an enrollment of just 98 students and before the tournament was broken up by school size.

Waited until the temps got into the 20s, then overdressed, and got out and around a bit past some old youthful haunts.

Plotted out a 4.5 mile loop, but felt good so I added a hill, and then the one road looked a lot closer from the top of the hill, but it all worked out. Did not feel cold with three layers and pants over tri shorts.

Not sure I know what to do with this - I trained with w4j and could still feel my toes the entire time.

Me | Superman (except I got rest and Superman didn't)

1. 2:34 | 2:33
2. 0:56 | 0:38
3. 3:40 | 3:12
4. 5:30 | 3:40 - mussed around, looped through, would have seen flag but less certain. Hardest point??
5. 2:29 | 2:53
6. 1:44 | 2:39
7. 3:14 | 4:14
8. 1:25 | 1:49
9. 1:29 | 1:22 - minor error, looped around and picked up reentrant from south
10. 1:24 | 1:44
11. 2:32 | 2:36 - Barbara's exit from 10 was faster
12. 6:29 | 8:18 - I took left, Barbara took right
13. 2:20 | 2:06 - As penance I took the creek line, but I found a trail and had no green bashing
14. 2:49 | 3:38 - popular skip, versus 7th place runner here
15. 5:28 | 6:22 - most skipped 14
16. 1:00 | 1:20 - rest advantage probably making a big difference now
17. 4:10 | 4:25
18. 2:02 | 2:56
19. 6:03 | 6:24 - Lovely marsh to run through!
20. 2:28 | 2:52 - Barbara hit the clearing first, had me worried I would lose one
21. 0:45 | 1:08 - I had a lot of time to sight the line
22. 2:03 | 2:14 - tried to go south and miss the fence, still found some fence
F. 1:08 | 1:11

Total: 1:03:42 | 1:10:14

Joe ran 1:06:03 with the benefit of a skip but without my five minutes' rest per control and route selection. :-) If given the choice, take five minutes of rest over a skip!!!!!!

Great training, and no resources required. "We don't need no stinkin' streamers" training.

Great training ride with w4j. Maybe one time we'll even have one when you don't freeze your toes off.

Originally thought about including some singletrack, but our many layers slowed travel and we opted to do Silver Hill up to Hell instead.

Not sure why my toes got cold. I think my bike shoes are slightly small; maybe a little bigger so there's some air around them would help. I had neoprene socks and shoe covers.

Running (Trail) 31:38 intensity: (19 @0) + (8:30 @1) + (16:29 @2) + (5:33 @3) + (47 @4) 2.48 mi (12:46 / mi) +5m 12:42 / mi
ahr:142 max:168 slept:7.5 shoes: Brooks Cascadia 8s

Returned to Franke Park to hit some trails I hadn't on the bike. I considered withdrawing from the Chill, but a few hills helped boost my temp. Thin knit gloves were a little too thin for 15 deg F until I got nice and warmed up. Explored any intermediate and hard loops offered, and ran over any log piles and skinnies. Pic and track in civilization.
