Intended as penance for sleeping through the narrow ski window this morning, it ended up as more so than imagined. My throat felt all close-y, my Arthur dog kept crossing in front of cars, and stomach discomfort peaked at the midway mark.

But it is important to remember that it matters not if I hit some arbitrary pace or not, or what my average heart rate was, but rather it matters that I went very slightly farther than w4j.

Installed studded tires at 814.6 miles on bike. Then helped wrangle logs at one of the Amish farms.

Headed out to test the studs. Figured I would be out thirty minutes, then I felt warmer and went seasonal road hunting. Did a bad job finding seasonal roads, but did a great job finding sketchy bridges. Lowest point was taking the wrong seasonal road and ending up...back at the opposite side of sketchy bridge number one, which I had declined to cross on the way out. I looked some more at the deer drag marks, figured I weighed less than man + deer, and made my way.

Not sure if studs worked or roads weren't too bad (some ice), but no near falls, woot woot.

GPS track Sunday.

Registered for Run Like The Dickens 5k in two weeks. Can I crack 21 with smarter pacing and more pain tolerance?

Lakeview 5k Turkey Trot.

Lined up about twenty small children off the line. Very concerned about the course, not even sure if immediate left or straight at the start. But we had a lead car so decided to keep an eye on that.

I spied a couple of xc looking high school age boys, so I figured I would hang onto them and just make sure I was first of the older guys.

Whistle blew, very quickly it was a dozen ten year olds, a woman, a 40s ish man, and me, around 6:40 pace. The kids naturally died off by 400 m and I took the lead by about the third block. This is exciting! I might win, unless those xc boys light it up!

Lead female was hot on my heels. I could easily hear her footsteps, so I wondered if she was letting me do the work. But by halfway, they had faded off, and it was just me and the pace car.

With about a mile to go, I hear clapping too soon after I went through, so at the next corner I peeked to see a young boy 50-100 back. Not enough if he's fit, as I had faded to low 7 pace.

But he had not gained much by the last 800 m, so thought I might be able to hold him off even if he charged.

Then there it was the final two turns, then a short downhill to the finish. Overall winner! Time wasn't blazing, but I'll take it!! Super thrilled.

Met Waldo and Niess May at Placeway for some cold weather paddling. Apparently during hunting season, as we were close to gun fire around the third bend. Glad 2/3rds were wearing blaze orange hats.

Good stuff, but I either need to start bringing toe warmers or get warmer footwear. My hands were comfy in sealskin gloves covered by windproof/waterproof mitten shells.

The entirely of the canoe's exterior above the waterline had a thin layer of ice when we finished!

It looked a lot warmer than it was:

Dang near out of gage on this height marker!

I just had a hallelujah, finding by accident an unmapped feature I was hoping to see, when a loud cracking noise scared me. A big chunk of a big tree broke off and landed where I had been 1-2 minutes earlier. Yikes! Flagging is dangerous business.

Did relocate the water stop for my convenience, tidied up one of the relocations, and the rest of the un surveyed ones were great, some nice woods.
