Event: SMOC Chilson

2 PM

Biking 2:43:53 intensity: (19:26 @0) + (1:40:39 @1) + (40:18 @2) + (3:30 @3) 24.09 mi (8.8 mph) +92m
ahr:124 max:160 shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

I started out with the idea of 38, which I quickly threw away when I got into the wind and realized I was dragging a bit anyway, plus I got onto two seasonal roads, which are awesome WT prep but not exactly 15 mph+ thoroughfares.

Also, given that it was mid 30s when I got up, I overdressed a wee bit but didn't have the sunscreen I felt I needed to pare down.

Enjoyable. I love the seasonal roads.

The photo does not capture the gorgeous rich blue above this farm:

I love closed bridges on seasonal roads!

I haven't figured out much about my new bike computer, so I was not using it for road browsing and I was lightly surprised to go by this river bend park, so I stopped in. Other pictures in my log are from this spot.

I wasn't sure if my rear tire was going to hold, since it's been weeping sealant, unfortunately while hanging above a stroller grrr, anyway I brought a floor pump just in case.

Running warm up/down 8:25 intensity: (16 @1) + (3 @2) + (11 @3) + (1:01 @4) + (6:54 @5) 0.66 mi (12:45 / mi)
ahr:182 max:203

Orienteering 1:25:31 intensity: (7 @0) + (28:25 @1) + (12:50 @2) + (15:53 @3) + (16:05 @4) + (12:11 @5) 5.5 mi (15:33 / mi) +193m 14:01 / mi

Pre ran a super fun red at Chilson. I always pictured Chilson as a perfect middle venue, and Tom went ahead and made a great long of it.

Was planning to stealth edit in my splits but naturally the watch stopped thanks to a button being squeezed by my wrist. If I can come up with a fair number I might do it anyway, although my time will be terrible since it’s quite hilly.

Also reflected on how much enjoyment Igor has given us with all of these great maps!

Running 24:56 intensity: (36 @0) + (11:33 @1) + (5:00 @2) + (7:06 @3) + (41 @4) 1.72 mi (14:30 / mi)
ahr:135 max:169 shoes: Brooks Ghost Swagger

10 minutes warm up

5 reps of Dead Man's Hill (now denoted by new Middlebelt Hill signs).

~35-40s up running
1:50-2:00 down walking on the wood steps

Then I walked to the car.

No overrev, just taxed fitness. Could have done more but pace would have dropped, plus maybe not a need to kill it on the first outing.

Orienteering 1:14:21 intensity: (6:30 @1) + (3:24 @2) + (24:15 @3) + (33:21 @4) + (6:51 @5) 4.96 mi (14:59 / mi) +177m 13:30 / mi
ahr:160 max:197 12c shoes: Roclite 315

Really fun course. While running it, I reflected on how cool it would be to move a misplaced c like Igor has, to have that complete confidence at speed.

Then I moved #10, which was on a smaller unmapped saddle instead of the big one. Hopefully I was right! Might be marginally too far into the reentrant, but much closer than the 50 odd meters it was off.

I took the waist deep marsh crossing to 6.

Mostly good other than wobbling around when contouring, need to clean that up. Fitness is unsurprisingly not where it should be.

No flutter is awesome - hitting a soft wall of “yeah I can’t keep this up” is so much better than “is this the end”.
