1. 375m 2:49 1 0% 7:30   375m 2:49 1 0% 7:30 High.
2. 357m 5:32 1 0% 20 15:29   732m 8:21 1 0% 11:24 SW around the spur, found Van (who started 4 min ahead) as I left the road. Hesitated before the control; Van found it for me.
3. 597m 6:08 1 0% 10:16   1329m 14:29 1 0% 10:53
4. 342m 2:28 1 0% 7:12   1671m 16:57 1 0% 10:08
5. 216m 2:43 1 0% 12:34   1887m 19:40 1 0% 10:25
6. 124m 1:59 1 0% 15:59   2011m 21:39 1 0% 10:45 Van was slightly back until here...
7. 479m 5:12 1 0% 10:51   2490m 26:51 1 0% 10:46 ... but I did not hear him on this leg.
8. 282m 6:13 1 0% 3:25 22:02   2772m 33:04 1 0% 11:55 After I crossed the road, I got stuck in the mismapped green (trying to find the gap was a losing proposition). Got back into the white and missed to the S, finding another perfect redwood circle. As I recovered, Van came. The better route (taken by Bruce) was S of the green.
9. 434m 5:30 1 0% 25 12:40   3206m 38:34 1 0% 12:01 Went lower than needed, grazing the second-green in the process. Had to climb steeply up at the end. Van kept up, on the better route.
10. 281m 6:36 1 0% 4:20 23:29   3487m 45:10 1 0% 12:57 Van suddenly started to pull away?!.. I went a little too far left, and by the time I crossed all the reentrants, I could not see him. I misread the reentrants by one and spent time searching too low. Finally relocated once I saw the park road at a distance.
11. 231m 4:24 1 0% 3:05 19:02   3718m 49:34 1 0% 13:19 Could not understand anything among the mapped depressions, even though I had a good attack point (however acquired after some confusion), a U in the green. Relocated once I saw the park road.
12. 413m 5:00 1 0% 12:06   4131m 54:34 1 0% 13:12 Went through all the green. Nailed it. Van was there.
13. 225m 2:39 1 0% 11:46   4356m 57:13 1 0% 13:08 Chased Van.
14. 499m 7:32 1 0% 2:00 15:05   4855m 1:04:45 1 0% 13:20 Went high and approached from near the clearing, but could not identify the tree among other trees just like it. I was too far N, though. Relocated from the trail-stream junction to the SE. Van went straight, an inferior route, and got there just as I was done.
15. 291m 4:29 1 0% 1:30 15:24   5146m 1:09:14 1 0% 13:27 Went low. It was a very steep, green climb up to it. A whole 1'30 lost to the best split?!..
16. 337m 10:05 1 0% 5:20 29:55   5483m 1:19:19 1 0% 14:27 Went straight (after Van, who pulled away again?!..). In 1998, this leg went to the same X, but from around #14, so the high route was a no-brainer. Crossed the main stream and ended up on a very steep slope; the map showed a flatter part between the stream and the steep slope. Ended up slowly searching up the steep slope. Saw bikers on the park road, came back. As I was going down, I saw that the gradual slope was indeed there, just not starting as low as where I originally crossed the stream. I had been looking at this flatter slope and thinking it was on the other side of the stream. If I had gone on the road, I would have easily found it, just like in 1998.
17. 276m 4:49 1 0% 1:10 17:27   5759m 1:24:08 1 0% 14:36 Climbed the spur; there was no ridgeline (one was mapped), the slope just went on. I checked stuff out further along across the imaginary ridgeline, then came back—the ridgeline appeared lower on the spur. Found Van again! After all the wonderings!
18. 495m 8:26 1 0% 25 17:02   6254m 1:32:34 1 0% 14:48 Stayed on the trail too long (too far S), crossed the S stream; had to come back N.
19. 176m 2:57 1 0% 16:45   6430m 1:35:31 1 0% 14:51 Pretty frustrated, so was slow.
20. 107m 29 1 0% 4:31   6537m 1:36:00 1 0% 14:41
