1. 447m 3:30 7 +56 36% 77.5 7:49   447m 3:30 7 +56 36% 7:49 Around on the right side, along the lake. I thought I was doing okay going this route. At the dam, 3 deer were shooting across. One got ahead of me but 2 others were scared back and jumped into the fence around Brookside Gardens. I ran up to the trail bend and in but was still short, having to climb slightly more through the muddy, wet, gully.
2. 595m 4:31 5 +48 22% 88.1 7:35   1042m 8:01 6 +1:29 23% 7:41 Out through the gully to the trail and across the dam; I did cut the corner on the trail intersection half-way across. I ran along the fence, passing Linus Hamilton going the other way. I pushed up to the trail and went along it, counting reentrants. I cut up a spur but hesitated when I couldn't see the control ahead where I expected it to be. I went on a little and then saw it.
3. 387m 2:44 3 +18 12% 94.3 7:03   1429m 10:45 6 +1:39 18% 7:31 I climbed to the right a bit, going around the field. I had to cut more to the left than I had planned but spiked it. I passed some others on their way out as I came in.
4. 133m 1:16 2 +21 38% 92.5 9:31   1562m 12:01 4 +2:00 20% 7:41 I hesitated on what to do for this; it seemed left and right routes were my choices to get through the green. However, I basically went straight. At the end I went slightly to the left. to get around some green, then in.
5. 543m 5:06 5 +1:17 34% 80.8 1:00 9:23   2105m 17:07 5 +2:46 19% 8:07 I was already getting tired. Out across the first trail, I continued to the next on a fairly straight bearing, then in. I reasoned that cutting acoss the forest would be slow with already being tired. Going up to the next intersection, I cut in from there and used the old ice rink building corner as a target but came through too high. I had to drop pass the control on the boulder group, then on to the control.
6. 468m 4:41 6 +1:02 28% 85.1 45 10:00   2573m 21:48 5 +3:38 20% 8:28 I came straight across all trails and then through what was mapped as fight green at the end. The "fight" was more of a medium to light greeen but it was slower than going around on the trail would have been. Mike Newman and Dan Do had just punched when I spiked it. Time lost is for the poor route choice.
7. 292m 3:16 7 +1:30 85% 66.7 20 38 11:11   2865m 25:04 4 +5:08 26% 8:44 To avoid mapped green, I went east to the trail instead of NE as the direct route would have had us do. Direct would have been better since Dann and Mike were already there when I'd gotten there. Once across the loop trail, I followed above the stream through what should have been light green. I hesitated a little but basically spiked it. Time lost is for the poor route choice.
8. 382m 3:02 4 +32 21% 87.0 7:56   3247m 28:06 4 +5:37 25% 8:39 I went about as straight as possible, with only slight wiggles to avoid thicker vegetation.
9. 621m 5:00 7 +1:25 40% 78.4 40 8:03   3868m 33:06 4 +7:02 27% 8:33 Straight out across the road and up through the mapped field to the end of it. I was much slower doing this than I would have been last week--I was easily tired today. After the field, I was on track but started doubting myself and misinterpretting the appearance of the control area. I was expecting one of the bigger ditches. While doing this, I saw another control in a ditch to my left; I backed-up to check it out, then corrected onward to the control. It was furher down than expected.
10. 323m 2:39 5 +49 45% 77.4 25 8:12   4191m 35:45 4 +7:51 28% 8:31 Straightish but a bit of a shift to the left to get through the unmapped green. This also helped me aim off on the trail. I followed the trail to the reentrant that crossed it. I found old rootstocks but had to double back to the newer and larger rootstock which was almost inside the reentrant. I think the control was hung on the wrong rootstock.
11. 555m 4:35 4 +1:23 43% 81.8 8:15   4746m 40:20 4 +9:14 30% 8:29 Up to the trail, then at the bottom, I left it from a bend to continue on bearing. I read the gullies on my right to confirm location but ended up just about hitting the trail west of the true location before turning back. Another guy ahead had made a similar mistake and got to the control ahead of me.
12. 229m 2:03 5 +35 40% 84.3 8:57   4975m 42:23 4 +9:49 30% 8:31 I went around to the left on the trail, reasoning that I was already tired and this was Wheaton, where the white woods are a slower. I left the trail at the stream intersection and followed the stream up. I crossed the stream to spike the control and some others were around too.
13. 418m 6:03 10 +3:15 116% 50.2 1:10 2:23 14:28   5393m 48:26 4 +13:04 37% 8:58 I passed one of the others I'd seen at #12, then hit the trail, turning right. I had intended to go up the trail further but someone else cut in early, just after the first bridge. I was having trouble reading detail but figured it'd be easier doing this than trying to cross the stream later. I passed just by #9, but fatigue had me miscount the reentrants from there. I climbed early, then had to come back down and over to the rootstock.
14. 329m 3:36 5 +1:27 67% 70.1 15 33 10:56   5722m 52:02 4 +14:31 39% 9:05 I went fairly straight at first but crossed the stream near the big bend that's not shown very well on the map. At the big road track, the angle was wrong according to my compass. This got me climbing higher. I should have stayed closer to the stream. I didn't see him punch but David Onkst was leaving the area as I approached the control.
15. 305m 3:29 5 +56 37% 83.4 40 11:25   6027m 55:31 4 +15:27 39% 9:12 I went left to use the trail a little, then looking ahead it was greenter than mapped. I stayed on the trail until 2 more bends. David Onkst had taken a straighter route and I was feeling that he was getting ahead. I came up the hill well, hitting the trail at the intersection. I used the trail going west for a little to get around some green, then was on a good bearing toward the control. Alas, I saw David approaching from my right and saw a control next to him. I didn't check the code and misinterpreted this as being the control I needed to go to. I veered right to that control, then seeing the code, I corrected to the right control, behind David.
16. 404m 3:45 5 +1:00 36% 83.0 30 9:16   6431m 59:16 4 +16:27 38% 9:12 I aimed toward the side of the building and gained ground on David. After getting to the building, I decided it best to stay along the fence turning southward to get around the green. There was more than mapped so I had to go through it anyway when I again turned east. David was further ahead now but I gained again as I approached the stream. I also saw a control ahead. David had verbally griefed about being "tired of getting beat by me" but he had also seen a control at about this point. It was one I hadn't seen. I hadn't seen the ditch it was on so I ran to the wrong control in the ditch closer to the trail before having to correct.
17. 188m 3:54 9 +2:27 169% 45.3 1:50 1:46 20:44   6619m 1:03:10 4 +18:54 43% 9:32 I went straight at first, somewhat behind David but when it got greener, I cut left where it was whiter. I also used the trail briefly before jumping off again. I passed a nice unmapped depression, then hit the correct ditch. Unsure about being high or low, I ran lower to the bottom since I had detoured left earlier. Still not seeing it, I then went on to stream. As I got there, David was already coming back and told me that it must be behind us. I looked at my map, and knew I didn't want to be at the stream so I turned back chasing David. We saw it with David reaching it first.
18. 259m 2:16 2 +7 5% 100.5 8:45   6878m 1:05:26 4 +18:45 40% 9:30 With no trail to help, I aimed on bearing and hit the train track bend. I almost caught David here, but passed him soon after. I greifed about the control being in the area of mismapped cairns. However keeping straight from the train tracks got me there.
19. 205m 1:56 6 +25 27% 86.5 10 9:25   7083m 1:07:22 4 +19:10 40% 9:30 I pressed ahead after passing David with some excitement and renewed speed, on to the saddle. David had handicapped me already by running 5 miles to get to the meet site but he was seeing this as an excuse. On the saddle and out of the green, I didn't see the control and so I paused. I eventually went ahead and found it behind a tree, surprised that I hadn't been able to see it before.
20. 284m 1:20 3 +5 7% 97.5 4:41   7367m 1:08:42 4 +19:15 39% 9:19 David was right behind me so I pushed on a bit harder. I hit the bridge and seeing the reworking of the grounds ahead, I thought it best to just go straight. There was nothing marked out of bounds and the land ahead looked barren so I ran through it. David behind me said somewhat jokingly that I should get penalty points for crossing a garden area; especially with it being in front of the park manager's offices. I'm not sure but since it wasn't marked out of bounds on the map and there was no tape blocking the way, I don't feel so bad about it.
