Race Evaluation

UNO: Pawtuckaway Wicked Hard Night-O: WHNO

bhall

1. Alex and I said screw any weird cutting through, trail all the way to the ruin/pit thing, used the reentrant and all the people in front
2. Thought about going to the trail, not many people did so I just stuck up in the woods, found the stone wall and went up from there
3. Followed along the little pond/swamps to the big pond, headlamp died as we crossed the beaver dam, used the big hill and swamp off to the right and the little hill was pretty obvious
4. Edge of the lake then spur and compass, we hit it pretty dead on
5. Got a little further into the green at the edge of the swamp than we wanted to, this one was very much a compass and hope for me, and also a hang on to Alex
6. This is where everything went very wrong. Got straight to the trail, cut off, dropped the compass and oh lord. Was too distracted with my light and lack of compass to have any good idea of where I was, my pause messed up Alex, and we had to have a nice little hmm where have we managed to get to chat.
7. Up the reentrant which went well
8. To the trail, cut off at the bend, used the edge of the swamp/maybe just were completely in the swamp, and then the spur/reentrant to lead us up in. Pretty good.
9. Said lets get to the stonewall and run along that and then managed to hit the gap in the stonewall but luckily Alex was confident about where we were so all was well. I was still not thriving with the lack of compass.
10. This is when I finally got my head together a bit more, and also had stopped my GPS track so I could use the compass app on my watch for some sort of direction. We knew exactly where we were leaving the trail, then drifted to the pond, then went back a little bit too far right, got to the depression that looked mighty like a dry swamp but I was confident enough with the contours around us to guess the depression, and sure enough after going slightly up the reentrant in front and to the left of us we got to the control.
11. Had a lovely drift way too far left on this one, I noted it a little sooner than when we hit the swamp and should have said something but didn't. Luckily that was a very good catching feature so we could tell exactly where we were.
12. ahahahaha trail, cut off where we meant to, compass wasn't awful but we just ran straight past the area of larger rocks straight to the stream, had a little discussion about which direction the stream was flowing because we weren't sure if we were way too far right or left. Eventually decided it was big enough to be the stream between the big swamp and pond, went back and immediately saw the big rock by the control. Lost a lot of time.
13. Compass did not thrive on this one either. Wanted to go to the trail, ended up in the yellow. Got to the second bit of yellow and the hill was way steeper than we expected so there was a moment of hesitation before deciding it couldn't have been anything else. Got to the trail and then immediately had to cut off of it, but we were fine from there.
14. Ran straight for the trail, had a little wander on the trail to make sure we were leaving it in the right place, and then hit it pretty dead on (I think)
15. Trail trail trail, reentrant to spur
F. Of course I had to go and wham my shins on fallen trees right as I passed people's tents when I had been fine for the rest of the course...
