Race Evaluation

NEOC - 2022 Masters Nationals: GreenY

bhall

1. compass and go, read the reentrant, was a little low but knew it.
2. Had a good start, got pushed a little higher than I would have liked by the green, but looked down and saw the lower cliff pointing NW which clued me in to where I had gotten to.
3. Started up towards the little hill top, had a moment of "oh shoot should I have been going south of the cliffs" but stuck on my path which was honestly fine. Steep slope, but I was not the first to do it. Little scary in the too-large-shoes... Wasn't exactly sure where I came down the cliffs so lost a bit of time there.
4. R Decided to go straight instead of trail to swamp which I think was the right choice, I just needed to execute it better. Ended up too far right, bashing through a lot of green when I could've been off in the white. Not sure how much time I lost from it.
5. All good
6. Trail, cut off when I could see the hilltop with cliffs, had a nice dip in the swamp, then found the rocks and open woods. All good other than the knee deep mud.
7. Went with the trail towards the start option which I think was the best route (though I haven't done split analysis of it). Had a bit of a moment when I got on an extra trail? Got on the trail in the wrong direction? I really don't know what happened but I recognized that it was not going in the direction it should have been, cut through a very small section of green and hit the trail that I was expecting to be on. Cut off the trail before the start and followed along the white woods (which were beautiful) and was able to very satisfyingly read the green blobs and got right to the control. Really enjoyed this leg.
8. R Wanted to hit the trail, which I did, but then took a bit to figure out where I was on the trail (didn't want to leave and go into the sea of green which was definitely smart). Did lose a bit of time there. Wasn't completely sure where I was once I got into the green anyways, but went up and got lucky seeing Tori coming into the control.
9. D R Decided to go left over the hill and around the green, but I couldn't tell where I was on the edge of the green so that ended up as going just directly straight through all of the green. Lost a lot of time there, and a lot of mental energy. I think that right in the little corridor would have been better.
10. R Went back out to the trail which I don't think was the right option. Probably lost a bit of time.
11. Ok, cut up right a little early and ended up on the hill top, but recognized it before I headed into the green so didn't have more of an adventure in the mountain laurel than I needed.
12. P Fine, a little hesitation because I didn't have a good picture in my head of were I was going but saw the control eventually.
13. D Was a little too far right on this one but I knew it.
14. P Left the trail too early because I couldn't figure out what was happening with the trails, then realized that I had left at the intermittent stream, followed along the hill side, got worried watching the WPs and a Canadian wandering but stuck to my gut and saw the control. I hope for their sake they were going to a different control because they were essentially standing on top of mine.
