Race Evaluation

WCOC - Sessions Woods C-Meet & Sprint: green

dness

1. (I was either first or second to go out on the course -- making a lot of tracks in the first half). Crossed stream on trail up to first quasi-level, diagonally to control.
2. Conservative route -- not leaving trail until I was due east of the control.
3. Diag. to E-W trail, then S-N. Looked for distinctive trees, but more of them exist than mapped, so just guessed a good place to leave the trail.
4. Questionable route choice - W to try to pick up trail and take it all the way to the end, then S on other trail. Didn't even execute it that well. Met up with another guy here.
5. He went right, I headed for the reentrant due S. I liked my choice.
6. Went right by a bow hunter in a tree. Control was lower than I thought.
7. Didn't know if I could cut a big slice of the marsh, so I only cut a little slice.
8. To reduce snow pushing, used trail until after hill on left, around N of pond.
9. To trail as soon as possible. Left trail at first closest approach to maximize chance of finding a usable crossing as soon as possible. Going downstream, took a long time to find a crossing. (Perhaps finding a crossing upstream rather than downstream would have been superior?) Almost bagged it here because it was very treacherous. Picked up Glen on the climb up.
10. Followed Glen to contour on the trail. A laurel branch poked my eye and I spent a lot of this leg not seeing that well. Followed some tracks to a stream crossing that looked really treacherous, so I followed stream to bridge, then up. My thigh muscles were really hurting here.
11. Not a good route: NW to N side of reentrant. When I got to top, got confused as to what trail I was on and took the long way around.
12. Drifted a little to the left.
F. Thanks Charlie. I was hoping to redeem myself after a couple of miserable outings. My navigation today was OK I thought, but my legs weren't up to all the snow pushing.
