NAOC Middle - 5th

Ooooohhh boy, an emotional roller coaster today.

Was on a perfect line to #1 and I started reading ahead for the long leg to #2, looked up and saw a control and ran to it... 3/4 of the way there I was double checked my CD and realized I was running to a tree, not a boulder. Oops. Quick recovery and happy with how I re-focused for #2.

#2 I hesitated a lot about where I was on the slope, visiting many boulders en route. Realized that I had to keep going for the slope to start turning and then refocused really well for #3.

Stopped a bit early to #4 but a fairly quick recovery. Then as I was going to #6, coming downhill on an open, rocky and sticky rough open, I jammed my bad toe on a rock, which may have elicited some foul words. I had trouble after that focusing on my orienteering rather than the pain, leading to a big mistake to #7 and my head not really being in it the rest of the race. I think I was pretty close to #7, but being slightly off on my bearing on this leg + not really planning fully my attackpoint meant that the boulder in the bush went unseen... but I seem to have visited every other boulder in the area...

The rest of the race was survival mode, miss on #8, and lots of hesitations, just trying to get to the finish.

Overall, pretty disappointed with this race, but burying myself and making my injury worse is not worth fighting through the pain.

Super impressive run by Izzy!!

NAOC - Sprint - 2nd!

This was maybe the most fun North American sprint race I've done - hats off to Erin for the course.

Very clean and confident in the first bit of the course, then missed the spectator control running just past it ... underestimated the leg difficulty, reading ahead too much... brain fart? Not sure.

Then a likely sub-optimal route from 6 - 7, missing a staircase that I kept thinking in my head "I can't miss that staircase". Also ended up hesitating a bit on 7 as well.

Another sub-optimal route to 12 where I didn't see an opening in the artificial tape, and slow going uphill to 13. Legs were pretty toasted at this point.

Overall, I'm happy with this effort. I wanted to make sure I was planning ahead and pushing as much as I could given my lack of fast-paced trainings in the last month, and I succeeded in both. Definitely could have shaved off a few seconds to take the gold, but kudos to Evalin for the epic race!

Chasing start o-tervals team training! Took these at a moderate pace, working on acknowledging and using others but doing my own nav. A few misses but I’ll blame it on the old map :P
Shin felt better wearing these shoes and blister was alright.
Swim in Lake Tahoe afterwards!

Long training at Donner Summit, again with the beauty views and fresh wildflower and mint smells at the top!
Feeling more confident in the terrain but not as aggressive today, blister is ouch on the uphills and shin (tib post) has been a little angry on the long downhills. Just working on looking up on bearings and going through the motions.
Everything was pretty good despite a small error on 4 (the first time) where I went too far. Got it the second time circling back. Bearing to 6 was off as I decided to climb early for the sake of my blister and feet.

Operation don’t get a blister before NAOCs = failed… just a small one though!
This training had forest that was super fast and open or crazy dense prickly bushes… not the place for shorts and long socks today :/
Besides the dense vegetation, the area was nice and I was feeling more confident! Physically feeling great too.

First training in Cali! 2300m of elevation at the top of the map! Great views and a little snow too!
Took the first two controls to really get into the map, mainly slow going and trying to shake the travel legs. The hills were hard at this elevation but started to feel better as the training went on. Last half of the course was good besides stopping too early at 15.
Nice to be running in heat that isn’t super humid!
