Hammerfest from the get go. The Elite race had a foot orienteering section to start with 3 CPs, bike 25kms mostly on gravel roads collecting a couple CPs on-route to a bike drop where we did a 6 or 7 km trail orienteering section grabbing 6 CPs, then bike on some powerline single track which was really nice. Onto a sweet section of bike oreienteering on single track. About 10 more kms of road biking and one short bike drop to get a trekking CP and then back to the resort. We were supposed to go paddling next but they inserted another foot orienteering section and shortened the paddle due to high winds. At this point we were the first 4 person team, and about 15 minutes behind the leader. When we got to the water the winds had picked up even more: major white caps and relentless winds. Way out was with the wind, but the waves were just massive. Went around both buoys but didn't know whether to punch or not. Way back was just ridiculous. Canoe bow would submerge after cresting a wave and hitting the next one. We were taking on water with every wave. Finally 3 massive waves one after another did us in and we capsized. Got the rescue boat over who fished us out of the cold 10 degree water. There was no way for reeder/hermes to help us as they would have tipped as well. The paddle was cancelled thereafter. Got back to the finish and warmed up with hot showers.
The team did amazing. Chris was so strong - he was the lead of the pace line on bikes and helped tow Hermes on the hills. Hermes was so strong too, considering she raced a 50km ultra last weekend and agreed to sub in for an injurred Squirt. First race with reeder, and he lives up to his status of being able to compete on such skilled teams as MBR.
Results are not in due to the changes in the course and the cancellation of the paddle, but pretty sure we were first 4 person team in. A great sufferfest with the long distance and rationing of water - it was hot and dry.
A really fun course with some nice navigating and single track riding thrown in there. Sean and his crew did a great job, as usual.
