Orienteering race 22:02 [4] ** 2.5 mi (8:49 / mi)
spiked:14/14c shoes: La Sportiva C-Lite 2.0

We were hoping to get Sharon Crawford to join us for an 8-pt team, but she took the day off and stayed out of the rain. Jim, Pete, and I ran the 1st 3 legs, and DNF'd without a fourth runner.

I wanted to run short to go easy on my bum knee, so I did yellow. I finished 4th on yellow, but had a clean run, while everyone else lost time on 1 or more controls. I forgot to start my Garmin, so the distance is a rough estimate. I was in a lot of pain for most of the run, but my knee actually felt a little better toward the end. So I guess that is good news(?).

This was my first orienteering relay, and I think a relay would be a blast on a warm, sunny day!

Orienteering race 2:12:25 [4] **** 6.9 mi (19:11 / mi) +734ft 17:26 / mi
ahr:159 max:190 spiked:11/15c shoes: La Sportiva C-Lite 2.0

This was my first real night-o experience (other than walking a white course), and it was a good one. Overall, I had a fairly good race, with a few bad legs.

#3 was lousy... I ran confidently to the control, and it wasn't there. I lost 5:45 trying to find it, before finally going out to the power line to relocate. I should have taken my time initially! I had a little bobble on the way to #5... I came out to the road, checked to verify where I was, but verified wrong--ran the wrong way along the road about 20 meters. #7 was the longest leg of the course, and I had another big chunk of lost time. I missed my initial attack point, but most of my lost time was due to my hobbling gait on a long run, rather than the mistake. On #11, I had a plan to mainly skirt around some green, but on the way, I changed my mind, and cut through. I got in some thick stuff, and by the time I fought my way free, I was back on my original planned route. AP says I didn't lose time, but I definitely lost at least a couple of minutes there.

The takeaway lesson from the course is that it is hard to read terrain at night.
