Note

Chase the Sun Trail Run, a fundraiser for the US Orienteering Team, was held yesterday. Thanks to Eric, Cristina, Melissa, and Valerie for all the work!
Here is the report: http://usa-orienteering.blogspot.com/2010/01/chase...

Orienteering race 1:12:00 [4] **** 9.7 km (7:25 / km)
spiked:14/20c shoes: 2009 VJ Falcons

TSN local event at Ironwood. Periods of excellent orienteering and full concentration mixed with meltdowns, mostly caused by distractions, such as sitting down to pull a cactus out of my calf or startling a herd of javelinas and having to wait for them to trot off. Fun orienteering, but a bit monotonous, as all the legs require just about the same strategy. Map later.

Running 10:00 [2] 1.25 mi (8:00 / mi)
shoes: 2009 VJ Falcons

Warm-up

Orienteering 1:27:36 intensity: (41:38 @1) + (45:58 @4) **** 5.96 mi (14:42 / mi)
shoes: 2009 VJ Falcons

Tucson Training Camp
O-Intervals on Catalina State Park in very strong wind and occasional rain. I ran them in a pair with Cristina. She got a head start of 1-2 minutes and tried to hold me off, which she did successfully 2 out of 4 times. The terrain was rough: rocky and prickly, with lots of cactus everywhere, but there were some nice parts too. Map and routes later.
4 PM

Orienteering 20:04 [3] ***** 1.94 mi (10:19 / mi)
shoes: Fall 2009 VJ Falcons

Tucson Training Camp
An attempt at doing the training race at Arthur Pack. I could not understand the map or find any controls. Got frustrated, jogged back to the finish and decided to try again.

Orienteering 30:13 [4] ***** 3.41 mi (8:52 / mi)
shoes: 2009 VJ Falcons

So I tried again, and this time it clicked. I was very careful on the first three controls, trying to understand which cactuses were mapped, which vague washes were shown, and how to interpret the 2ft contours. After spiking the first three, I sped up and pushed hard the rest of the way, orienteering well. This was my first satisfying orienteering session this week. About time. Map later.

I could not have summed up the weekend better myself: http://attackpoint.org/viewlog.jsp/user_3280/perio...
9 AM

Orienteering 1:22:23 [3] 9.0 km (9:09 / km)
shoes: 2009 VJ Falcons

Tucson Training Camp
Hanging controls for my training at Kentucky Camp. Messed up the scale and made everyone run 7.5km instead of the advertised 5. Embarrassing.
2 PM

Orienteering 1:12:14 [3] 6.0 km (12:02 / km)
shoes: Fall 2009 VJ Falcons

Route choice partner exercise with Eric on the Box Canyon map. Gorgeous location, hilly but runnable terrain. Tired.
8 PM

T.rex training 20:00 [1]

Climbing at Rocks and Ropes with Kat, Cristina, and Linda Kohn. Linda is a beast.

Note

Gave a talk to camp participants and a couple of TSN members (including Jaxon Rickel, a very promising junior) about my experience living and training with OK Linné in Sweden. This was followed by a talk by Raffael Huber (Swiss B-Team) about the benefits and responsibilities of being on the Swiss National Team, and a few other Swissy things. Great talk. Can someone help me start an orienteering high school in Hudson Valler?
9 AM

Orienteering 32:58 [3] *** 4.5 km (7:20 / km)
shoes: 2009 VJ Falcons

Tucson Training Camp
Day 1
"Track-O" at Sweetwater Preserve. Huge cacti everywhere, yeah!!
More later.

Running 25:00 [2] 4.5 km (5:33 / km)

Running the trail loop at Sweetwater after the Track-O.
2 PM

Orienteering 53:52 [2] 4.5 km (11:58 / km)

8 PM

Orienteering 32:31 [2] ** 3.61 km (9:00 / km)
shoes: Blue Asics 2009

Control picking on the University of Arizona sprint map at night with Kat and Cristina. Good training - I haven't been on an urban sprint map in a while and thoroughly enjoyed this.

Orienteering race 1:05:12 [4] **** 8.5 km (7:40 / km)
spiked:12/14c shoes: Fall 2009 VJ Falcons

Anza Borrego Day 2 - Blue course
Much better today. Two small mistakes. Didn't lose too much time searching for the missing control, but still a little frustrating. Map and analysis later. The desert is awesome, but I still have a lot to learn about orienteering here.
2 PM

Orienteering 30:00 [1]

Maze-O with Sandra and Peter Zurcher
