On Alonissos island, Greece.

It’s pretty hot here but I brought running shoes so wanted to get at least one run in. Bought a hiking map specially (at Stanford’s in London, of course) and picked what seemed like a sensible 8k route.

It started off well enough, steeply up a hill on a narrow track but at least with good views, then over a reservoir dam and “down the dry river bed of a canyon”, as the guide had it.

Unfortunately, turns out the canyon was full of big and small rocks so it was 3k+ of downhill hopping and skipping with Abi in tow, who’s amazing on all surfaces except that one.

After what seemed a hundred false dawns we made it out eventually, to some more nice sea views and welcomed by the local mountain goats.

Type 2 fun, but great to get out and definitely an adventure.

Had a quick break halfway round, to look after the calf (and it also helped in the crazy heat.) Otherwise nothing to report except I’m desperately unfit.

Tennis 30:00 [2]

Tobi’s getting into playing tennis, and we’re lucky to have a “community court” down the road where you can play for £5 an hour.

A pretty mild affair so far but excellent fun.

GLOSS, Gunnersbury Park.

Steady jog to look after calf. Bit twingy but could have been worse. Navigation very shoddy but it was hot and some of the map was a bit sketchy

It’s stupidly hot and I’m very unfit. Not a great combination.

Cannizaro Park race, 5.2k

A monster park race with 37 controls and lots of back and forth plus ducking into bits of grot to get controls. Makes for a slightly crazy GPS track.

Good fun (and a nice area), maybe 45 secs total mistakes even though it was hard to keep the focus all the way through, plus my fitness is just appalling.

Ended up 3rd, about 4 mins behind Michael Crone, which I'll happily take all day long.

Cycling 20:00 [3]

Bike home from park race, with the novel addition of crashing into a car at a roundabout - I had priority but I should have double checked they'd seen me.

Fell pretty hard on my butt, but otherwise unscathed so dusted myself off, bent the bike back into shape and got on with it.

Home to orienteering. Half on bike lanes, part along a wooded brook. So much fun!

Orienteering 49:58 [3] 8.67 km (5:46 / km) +49m 5:36 / km

GLOSS+extension, Horton Country Park
6.8/75

There is a reason there aren’t many O events near London, and that’s because everything is overgrown with nettles / brambles / head high grassy stuff.

So this was a bit of an adventure, even more so as the planner was not afraid to “go for it”. I got round ok except for not seeing a tiny path once and getting properly stuck for 2 minutes. However, I should have probably heeded the advice to wear full length leg cover.

Running for 50 minutes feels like a long time right now, but at least I got round.

Cycling 34:14 [3] 9.99 km (3:26 / km) +31m 3:22 / km
ahr:118 max:155

Back home from the orienteering. Still so much fun!
