Monday Apr 8 #

Note

Rest day. Legs are tired after three days of orienteering.

It was a great weekend.

Sunday Apr 7 #

10 AM

Orienteering race 43:00 [4] 3.0 mi (14:20 / mi) +140m 12:31 / mi
shoes: VJ Falcon Blue

OCIN - US Masters Champs, day 2. Looking for another really good run.
Thought I had a good plan to an easy #1 control. In reality, wasn't quite visuaizing the leg very well, plus got off my compass bearing. Ended up left of the control when I expected to be right. After 30-40 seconds of standing at the edge of a deep, narrow reentrant I realized where I was, just 20-30m from the comntrol. Ugh.
Similar issue with #3. Should have slowed down and navigated more precisely in the disc golf course area. Instead ran through the easy fairways and ended up way left of my line. Lost 5 minutes looking in the wrong reentrants before piecing it together. Ugh again.
After that it was a great run. Spiked the remaining, all rather easy controls. Terrain and orienteering were very similar to GAOC maps, count spurs and reentrants and run your line to linear features.
Six minutes of errors cost me big time, I was still only 4:05 out of first!
Shoulda, coulda, woulda...
Still managed an overall third place finsih for the weekend.

Orienteering race 44:29 [4] 3.3 mi (13:29 / mi) +70m 12:39 / mi
shoes: VJ Falcon Blue

OCIN - US Master Champs. Really good run.
A little slow going to #1 while I deciphered and pieced together the trails. Mis-read what I thought was a trail junction but was really just two trails passing near each other. Intended to use that trail junction as an attack point but since it didn't exist I just ran past it for another 50m. Then full stop for about a minute to decipher where I was. Not to far off, a good creek junction nearby (just 50m W of the control) led me right into the control.
After that the run went really well. Spiked every control. Post race analysis shows I could have had slightly better routes on a couple legs. But no time lost due to mistakes! Third place (again), 43 seconds out of first.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: VJ Ultra 2

Walking on the permanent course at Heuston Woods campground.
Green woods has reasonable visibility but definitely is slow running. Hills are steep, reentrants are narrow and deep.
Plan for the racing is to stay out of the green and out of the reentrants.
3 PM

Orienteering race 33:07 [4] 3.1 mi (10:41 / mi) +90m 9:48 / mi
shoes: VJ Ultra 2

OCIN - Middle distance race.
Went very well, turns out I was a little slow to the first control but I didn't think so at the time. Good route to #2. Went straight rather than 2-3 times the distance to go around the reentrant. Down and up the reentrant really wasn't so bad since it was only 2-3 contours and white woods.
Rest of run was really good O-wise until #11. Had trouble reading the map, probably mostly because of being tired. Lost ~1 min.
Finished third, less than 1 min out of first.
