Warmup 13:00 [1] 2.0 km (6:30 / km)

Only 2 mins of stretching today. Feel the effects of yesterday's expedition badly.

Orienteering 1:08:39 [3] 10.1 km (6:48 / km)
ahr:163 max:171 spiked:16/19c

The "A" final. Was clean (+/–) until a 6-min "event" at #13. All I said yesterday about the orthogonal base applied; during the "event", I was never too far from the #12–#13 and #13–#14 connecting purple lines. Jogged the remainder of the course at hr 155–160—unmotivated and tired from yesterday's 4 hours of rogaine training.
21:45 back (46%). Overall, 54th/111.

Warmup 13:00 [4] 1.0 km (13:00 / km)

Orienteering 44:14 [4] 6.9 km (6:25 / km)
ahr:170 max:177 spiked:14/10c

Svyatkin Memorial: the qualifying. The top 20 were to run in M21E on Sunday, and the rest, in M21A (notice: no B final: PC is making its way East). I knew I had no chance on Earth to qualify for Russia's top 20 (the Team was skipping the World Cup).
Had a decent race, except for a 5-min tour of the complete set of the first controls on all courses. I'm surprised I actually ran the rest of the 5.90-km race.
37th, 14:39/50% back (qualifying time was 36:40). Among all on the course, 57th/140.
The map was hard to interpret for me, as it seemed there was no orthogonal base to it. All the features were there, so for someone who was a good map reader, this was a great map.
I hate map reading. It slows me down. I try to do as little of it as possible. I look at the terrain around me instead and try to move quickly in a direction I like. I pick well-defined objects out of the terrain as I see them, and do only as much map reading as is necessary to locate those objects on the map. I then apply corrections to my direction of travel as appears necessary from this information. If the direction I'm headed in (as indicated by the compass) is off compared to what the map says, I'm in trouble.

Running with weights 1:11:23 [2] 13.0 km (5:29 / km)
ahr:149 max:163

Ran from the camp to Petäjärvi station in search for a bar/cafe with a TV to watch the World Cup Soccer 3rd place game. The bar was closed from 3 pm until 8 pm. No luck but good rogaine training (see comment). Of course, we only did this because nobody qualified for the E final.

Note

We walked back to the camp, through the woods. It was amazing how many people we found camped in the woods along the 12-km route, for a rainy Saturday, 110 km from St. Petersburg, no apparent civilization within those 110 km (see TV experience, above). Had tents/cars/people/boats/mtn bikers/shroom pickers in sight for almost all of it.

Running with weights 8:00 [1] 1.1 km (7:16 / km)

Some running on the way back. Raining.

Warmup 50 [1] 0.1 km (8:20 / km)

Svyatkin Memorial, north of St. Petersburg. Svyatkin was one of Russia's top orienteers in the late 1980's who died of heart problems in 1992.
Finding the event center was a part of the challenge today.

Orienteering 21:06 [4] 3.6 km (5:52 / km)
ahr:168 max:177 spiked:9/10c

The "SuperSprint" (a cross between a shortened Short/Medium and a model event): pick your start time but otherwise regular O. Nailed almost everything but clearly felt the yesterday's 12×200. 16th in M21 (38th overall/405 on the course), 3:36/20% behind.
Classic terrain of SE Finland/northern Leningrad Oblast. Quite depressed.

Easy running 20:19 [2] 3.6 km (5:39 / km)

To Avangard.

Medium pace running 19:47 [3] 4.9 km (4:02 / km)

A subset of Luchiks' interval training. They did 2×(1K + 600 + 200), alternating with 1K's at 4:00/km. I did what I could. The 4.9 km is what I did of the 1K's. Had intestinal issues, again.

Short intervals 9:00 [4] 2.4 km (3:45 / km)

The bursts of activity among the 1K's. I did 600 @ 2'19; 200 @ 47; 200 @ 37; 600 @ 2'26; 600 @ 2'13; 200 @ 38.

Easy running 4:24 [1] 0.4 km (11:00 / km)

Some walking while waiting for Luchiks to catch up.

Easy running 23:33 [1] 3.6 km (6:33 / km)

Home.
