Backcountry skiing (BackDrop) 4:00:00 [2] 18.0 km (13:20 / km) +1390m 9:37 / km

Rogers Pass with Courtney, Atsuko, Mike and Brook. Unfortunately Brook was under the weather - caught something from his kids - so he ended up going back early. I wasn't sure what to expect for conditions after the recent storms so the plan was a bit nebulous. Once we got there decided on Ursus Trees but it seemed like a fair number of people were going there with very few tracks going to Balu so switched the plan. Weather and hazard seemed better than I thought they might be so took advantage to ski some alpine terrain. We did one run on Balu and then one run from the ridge into the lower part of 8812. Snow was ankle deep but soft and easy to ski. Nice cruisy runs mainly. A few times the light did get flat but nothing too bad.

Classic ski 1:02:00 [2] 11.0 km (5:38 / km) +250m 5:04 / km

Snuck out at lunch for a nordic ski. Dog loop was a little slow with a skiff of fresh wet snow. Some holes are opening up too with the warm weather. The upper trails were in much nicer shape.

Classic ski 1:15:00 intensity: (55:00 @2) + (20:00 @4) 15.5 km (4:50 / km) +250m 4:29 / km

Masters nirdic - only four of us tonight - Matt, Courtney, Suzanne and myself. Took the dogs on a warm up loop to start then to Evelyn's for some tempo work. 1-2-3-4-3-2-1 minute zone 4 with same time for rest. Couldn't keep up with Matt up the hill but pretty similar on the flatter bits. Snow was better than expected despite the rain. Would have been a good day to test out my new Finite structure tool but didn't get organized in time.

Backcountry skiing (Coomback) 2:00:00 [2] 9.0 km (13:20 / km) +675m 9:42 / km

Morning ski - mainly with Russ as the rest of the gang were feeling a bit under the weather for various reasons. Two runs on the west side - a bit more mellow but nice to check them out again. Then skied out to the sleds. Starting to snow a lot more heavily as we left. Would be curious to find out if the new snow and warmer conditions woke up the Dec 2nd layer there. It was so nice being in nice wintery conditions at Jumbo - sad to get back to the trucks and have rain, green trees and slush on the road. A little over 30 minutes out - was more comfortable that I wouldn't lose the sled or Russ so could go a bit faster.

Backcountry skiing (Coomback) 5:00:00 [2] 19.0 km (15:47 / km) +1980m 10:23 / km

Another day of exploration this time north of the cabin. We had skied into the bowl north of the little summit above the cabin on our first trip here years ago but never since. Overcast with light snow through the course of the day but enough visibility to make it into the alpine. Used the ramp where the cornice is pretty small and then went down the right drainage (which was new to me). Nice mellow alpine slopes and then some steeper slopes with occasional pillows on the lower bit. Very nice line. One ice waterfall about 2/3 of the way down can be bypassed to the left (although we skied it). The crossed the big avy path and climbed to the next shoulder. This is a common RK run so again took advantage of some nice glading and the fact that they aren't skiing yet. Then went exploring setting a new up track to the cabin via a bench above the main drainage - fun to see that it did go. Didn't love the upper part of the track where we had to zig zag up a short gully but it worked out. Lucas and I then went solo for another couple runs - one from the summit onto the ridge separating the cabin bowl with the bowl we had skied for the first run, and another from the ridge knob. First run was a cool ramp into a little couloir that joined the bowl from the first run while the second we went down the ridge before doing some pillow hoping to make it into a lower glade. Good stuff and all new runs to me.
