Trail Run 57:00 [3] 7.0 km (8:09 / km) +515m 5:57 / km
shoes: Salomon XT 6 SG

Threw on the heavy pack and made a run for it to the Pre Vernet in my new kicks. They're pretty stiff out of the box but given my experience with my other pair, I think they just might be Ecuador worthy. Good enough for late in the race when I need the extra support and foot wrapping.

Road Ride 3:30:00 [3] 86.0 km (2:27 / km) +2355m 2:09 / km

I left from Briancon and make the steady climb to the base of Col de Galibier. It was a brisk temperature but the sun was out so it was quite a treat for weather. The climb up Galibier is fairly steady until the last km or so...it gets to be around 13% but the quality of the road at that point is superb which makes a difference. The views from the top were pretty cool as I looked north into the Haute Savoie. From there, it was almost a 2,000m descent to Bourg d'Oisans. I got cold, admittedly a bit spooked in some of the long tunnels as visibility is sh!t and cars can get up on your backside quickly, and my speeds got quite big...as my new bike is so bloody smooth. I'll slowly get better at downhills but I'm not sure I'll ever be able to refrin from brake feathering too much.

Trail Run 4:30:00 [3] 21.0 km (12:51 / km) +1850m 8:56 / km
shoes: Salomon S-LAB 5 XT SOFTGROUND

Starting in Briancon at around 1,300m, I began climbing immediately. It didn't stop until I topped out along the ridge line is was on at 2,600+m. I was treated to perfect weather as I could see for Kms in all directions. Once at the Col I would be picked up at, I did an out and back of another mountain before Lee and Wee arrived for lunch. Stellar day.

Road Ride 3:00:00 [3] 53.0 km (3:24 / km) +2250m 2:48 / km

Probably not the best time to take a day off but I really need to get in some higher altitude training in before Ecuador. We set off for Briancon this morning and made the obligatory stop en route to climb Alpe d'Huez. It was very steep to begin with but leveled off after a few switchbacks. It was a grind for sure but as I didn't have any kms in my legs beforehand, it wasn't bad at all...says me who took twice the record time to climb the damn thing (somewhere between 1h10 and 1h15)! I climbed beyond the TdF finish to where the road ultimately ends higher up. There were some nice lookouts to the north. I turned and made the quick descent back down and set off east toward Briancon. More climbing, of course, and while it was a glorious day out, it was tough to really enjoy this part as there was so much traffic. Lee and Wee picked me up at the huge dam and we continued on. Big trail run at elevation tomorrow!

Road Ride 1:35:00 [3] 40.0 km (2:23 / km) +670m 2:11 / km

Up at the crack before what was going to be another long day for a climb to Col de Leschaux. It was dark for far too long and my hands froze on the downhill back into town. And as per usual, the stiff wind that I rode into once back along the lake was somehow restricted to only on the path I was on; as there looked hardly a breath of wind on the lake and the trees didn't move a cm.

Road Ride 4:15:00 [3] 87.0 km (2:56 / km) +2425m 2:34 / km

With my sweet new ride, I went for a tour de lac that was reminiscent of a route that the Harps and I did last May. I didn't suck wind nearly as much this time and I MAY have been able to keep up with him if he were riding today....maybe. I got a 60cm Cannondale SuperSix Evo Ultegra and while it fits differently than other road bikes I've used, I like it and it rides nicely. For the first time, I feel comfortable in the drops and it's a good combo of stiffness and dampening. To the dump with my old Devinci Silverstone and I can finally give back the 10 year-old steel road bike I've been borrowing.

Orienteering race 38:00 [4]
shoes: Salomon SpikeCross

It was a spike rich environment out in Cran Gevrier today. As per usual, however, I've been scarred with dozens of raspberry bush scratches. Perhaps my route choices weren't so hot after all.

Paddle 1:45:00 [3]

I'm making a habit out of these late night paddles. I'm sure I get some strange looks as I portage through the streets of Annecy le Vieux and do my put in / take out at a popular dock for lounging around, but I'm none the wiser as I can't really understand all of the slang and can't see their faces in the dark anyway.

Trail Run 1:25:00 [3] 9.0 km (9:27 / km) +705m 6:47 / km
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 3

Too many 11+ hour days of selling shoes in a row but managed to get the steam for a run up and down the Veyrier after I put Wee to bed. It was a beautiful night and was surprisingly warm atop Col des Sauts just before 22h00.

Paddle 1:05:00 [3]

Another post- putting- Wee- to- bed paddle session in the dark. It's kind of nice to have the lake to myself, save for the flock of cantankerous swans. I just don't trust those buggers.

Trail Run 3:35:00 [3] 17.0 km (12:39 / km) +1350m 9:03 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra 2

From my front door, up to Mont Baron and along to Col de Contrabandier. I dropped down the north side thereafter and had to bushwhack out to the highway. Crossed and started the climb toward the mtn above Naves before hitting a newly marked trail running racecourse that I figured had to go toward Naves. It was a great route and much more interesting single track than what I was on. It spit me out in Naves and the paddy wagon (eg. Lee and Mari) came and picked me up.

Paddle 2:00:00 [3]

Put Wee to bed and then headed down to the lake for a paddle down to Roc de Chere and back. I was going to cross the lake but thought better of it given the chop and total darkness. Smart Daddy!

Trail Run 5:30:00 [3] 25.0 km (13:12 / km) +2030m 9:23 / km
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 3

I'm calling this one the TTT route; Talloire - Tournette - Thones. Talloire is on the east side of Lac Annecy, La Tournette is the tallest peak in the region, and Thones is a town to the east on the other side of it. After a super long 20 minute drive to the start (yeah, I shake my head sometimes that we don't have to drive for hours to get to these types of places), I set off from Talloire. MapMyRide classifies the climb as an 'HC' and it certainly felt steep and challenging as I loaded up my 30L with weight and climbed for over 3 hours. It really was a perfect day out so T and shorts was all that was needed. On the way down the other side of La Tournette, it's a lot of scree and of course, I bailed...decently hard on my left hip, leaving a nice little bruise now. The other parts of the descent were sketchy in sections (eg. you fall, you're not getting up so easily) but incredibly picturesque. Amazingly, the 5-6k road run out to Thones wasn't so bad.

Road Run 57:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon FW15 Proto

Gorgeous day out and I managed to get out for a lunch time run in the countryside. What's cool here is that farmers don't seem to care if you run acres their fields.

Road Ride 1:17:00 [4] 37.0 km (2:05 / km) +340m 1:59 / km

6AM ride around the lake to start the day off. Perfect temperature. I was riding south and caught a guy; a rare occurrence around here. After I went slowly by him, he asked if he could draft off of me. Of course he could but after a couple of minutes, he went by to take the lead. I drafted for all of a minute or two and he went by again. This time, he took the speed up to 40 kph. Bizarre, given that I originally went by him at 33 kph. The traffic on the way back wasn't so fun and I had to fire a bird and a few choice words at some jacka$$ who decided to pass an on coming car, even when he clearly saw me. Thankfully, this is rare.

I had designs on going up to Col des Sauts but bailed as I felt sleepy and did a smaller loop instead. Putting Wee to bed and THEN heading out for training is mentally tough...I'm so weak.
