Trek 4:00:00 [1]
shoes: Salomon S-LAB 3 XT Wings

After a week here on Vancouver Island, Leanimal and I decided it was time to get a little bit of a sweat going. Nothing too strenuous as we've got Weeanimal with us so we did a nice loop on the east side of Strathcona PP. Wicked views and it was capped off by a massive code brown at the halfway point - the joys of parenthood! Weeanimal was a trooper bobbing around on my back all day.

AR Competition race 16:00:00 [4]
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra 2

Wilderness Traverse - Efforts to retain Bob the Beaver for one more year were dashed early with a tough go between CP 2 and 3 in the opening trek. We missed our target WAY right and ended up on seemingly parallel features. Finally hitting CP3 and realizing that we had likely dropped about 1h30m to Team SisterhoodoftheTravelingSnowpants.com, we were pretty disappointed. What I hadn't taken into account was the Hansel and Goose factor.

On the bike, 3 flats, 3 busted bike computers, 1 bent derailleur, 1 non-functional small front chainring, and 1 totalled mapboard didn't stop Hansel from literally towing and pushing all 3 of the rest of us (well...mostly me) back into the thick of things by the end of the section. I was pretty cooked about 1/2 way into the trek and must have been shockingly brutal to tow (all 200 lbs of me) as much as he did...of course he wouldn't say how Phat I really felt at the end of his dog leash rig.

To the paddling next and although motorized transport is illegal, the next best thing is not...Goose and Hansel's Evinrude'esque power at each boat's stern. Our lightest teammate's seat busted about 5 minutes in (more good luck for us) but we shoved our packs underneath and voila, we were good to go at Goose's and Hansel's jacked up speed again. We managed to pick off a collection of teams just ahead of us and snuck past Beowulf and 7 Systems after CP9 at a shallow bit headed south. Into CP10 we learned that we were 2nd...what?!? 'Are you sure?'...Yup. Sweet.

Onto the trail run back to Stanhope, Leanimal tore up the track and we all held on while she set a torrid pace. As a last ditch effort to bridge a gap on Team SpungebobSquarePantalons.com ahead of us, we bushed it from CP13 due west to a snowmobile track that looked a little easier and shorter to the line. Nope, they spanked us by 30 minutes in the end.

In AR, teamwork is so key and I felt this full on from about hour 3 onward. RtNX killed me more that I would have hoped and I found it really tough to focus on the mental multi-tasking of navigation while keeping up to the pace we needed to go to be competitive. Muscle cramping was pretty bad at times but my teammates were always there to lend a hand, put food in my mouth, or tow me up a hill. Merci.

Another excellent race put on by Getawaystix and made even better with the helpful guidance of Bash. A sell-out crowd is a testament to the quality that you've put together. I think you'd better add a few slots to the roster for 2012 so as not to disappoint too many would be additional teams!

Road Ride 2:00:00 [3]

Sweet early AM ride with Goose. Attacked the hills with vim and vigor.

Trail Run 53:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon S-LAB 3 XT Wings

Turned the corner from RtNX. As though receiving strength straight into my legs from Bob the Beaver atop our mantle...just in time for Wilderness Traverse!

Road Ride 1:00:00 [2]

First bit of activity since RtNX. Nothing sore, save for the numb feet, but still not a lot of gas in the legs. Could definitely feel some of the lingering soreness I remember feeling late in the race. Must eat even more!
