orienteering race 1:10:49 [4]
12c

I recorded the time to the second because sometimes seconds are important.

Green course at Remarkable Flats.

Another clean run with AP giving me 22 seconds of errors (all on the run in). Again, it wasn't quite that clean, but it was a fairly clean run.

On the way to 4 I saw a flag on a large boulder that's about 100 meters west of the large boulder I was looking for. But I went over to check it. I said out loud "that's not our control" just before I got to it. It wasn't and checking it probably didn't cost more than 10 seconds. But it was not good to check it. For some reason I just felt a little unsure. I was annoyed with myself.

I wonder about the route to 7. I went a bit left of the straight line. But I thought about going farther left and using more open (as opposed to rough open). Danny went that way. But I can't really compare routes because he made a big mistake at the control.

I was worried about 9 as I got into the area near the control. I had to force myself to not going checking everything that looked like a cliff. It seemed like a lot of people were looking for the marker about 50 meters too far to the west.

The course was fun but I was tired. The last bit from 11 to the finish was a lot of climb (maybe 10 lines over about 500 meters).

Lots of fun.

orienteering race 54:16 [4]
19c

Green course at "Area 307."

I wasn't too tired at the start (like the day before).

I managed to effort/pace better. But I was still slow. I told myself before the start that there was no speed that would be too slow as long as I was moving the right direction. That helped? I guess?

AP shows 0 seconds of mistakes. But that's generous. I drifted a bit on the way to 2. I was struggling a bit to make sense of what I was seeing on the map on the middle of the leg. It didn't really matter, but it felt confusing. I guess some hesitations and confusion would be worth 10 seconds?

I had two other little errors that cost minimal time. Leaving 11 I drifter a bit off the line - the hillside pulling me a bit to the right of the line. That's the sort of mistake that's easy to make but I don't usually make if I'm sharp. And I did something similar leaving 15 (corrected it by the edge of the circle).

The course started in flattish and very open terrain. Then it went in an area with shorter legs, more detail and lower (but still good) visibility. Finally, it went back to flat and open terrain with very good visibility. You could see features and markers from a long way away. It was just a matter of getting there. I could have used more of the rocky areas and fewer of the long open legs. It was, however, fun.

You wouldn't mistake the course or area for Scandinavia. But something about the way it was designed felt Scandinavian.

The lowlight of the day were meals - it took a very long time to get our sandwiches at the deli in Laramie for lunch. Then it was going to be an hour wait for food at Alibi pizza, so we found another option (Lovejoy's?). But it took a while to get there, waiting for a table and then get food.

orienteering race 55:55 [4] 5.2 km (10:45 / km)
12c

Green course at Laramie on a map called "Sugar Hill."

I was tired at the start.

I started the course too fast and had to walk already after a couple of hundred meters. The altitude is just difficult.

AP shows me with 20 seconds of errors (and all of that is on the run in). That's generous. I think I lost about 10-15 seconds on the 2nd leg by drifting off line a bit more than intended. I was a bit hesitant on 4 after I emerged from the light green - maybe another 10 seconds?

On the last third of the course I had a lot of trouble getting the pace proper for the altitude. I pushed a bit too hard and felt light headed (and was quite light headed at the finish).

Overall, it was slow but clean with really only one mistake (drifting off the line on the way to 2) but time lost to running/walking.

running 40:00 [3]

I did not sleep well. But I woke up before the alarm, so I got myself out the door for a jog.

Headlamp jog (for about half of the time). My legs felt good. That was a nice surprise.

running 40:00 [2]

Morning half-headlamp jog. Nice out. I went slowly (which kind of goes without saying these days). There were a lot of spiderwebs on the little bit of trail just north of Clinton Parkway.
