orienteering race 54:16 [4]
19c
Green course at "Area 307."
I wasn't too tired at the start (like the day before).
I managed to effort/pace better. But I was still slow. I told myself before the start that there was no speed that would be too slow as long as I was moving the right direction. That helped? I guess?
AP shows 0 seconds of mistakes. But that's generous. I drifted a bit on the way to 2. I was struggling a bit to make sense of what I was seeing on the map on the middle of the leg. It didn't really matter, but it felt confusing. I guess some hesitations and confusion would be worth 10 seconds?
I had two other little errors that cost minimal time. Leaving 11 I drifter a bit off the line - the hillside pulling me a bit to the right of the line. That's the sort of mistake that's easy to make but I don't usually make if I'm sharp. And I did something similar leaving 15 (corrected it by the edge of the circle).
The course started in flattish and very open terrain. Then it went in an area with shorter legs, more detail and lower (but still good) visibility. Finally, it went back to flat and open terrain with very good visibility. You could see features and markers from a long way away. It was just a matter of getting there. I could have used more of the rocky areas and fewer of the long open legs. It was, however, fun.
You wouldn't mistake the course or area for Scandinavia. But something about the way it was designed felt Scandinavian.
The lowlight of the day were meals - it took a very long time to get our sandwiches at the deli in Laramie for lunch. Then it was going to be an hour wait for food at Alibi pizza, so we found another option (Lovejoy's?). But it took a while to get there, waiting for a table and then get food.
