Orienteering race (Orange Course) 26:55 [5] 2.8 km (9:37 / km)

US Relay Championships - Orange Course - Leg #2

Mitch ran first leg, Rob S. ran #3 and Rob H. ran #4. Overall was pretty happy with the run. One blunder was #5 - got a bit off on the bearing to the W, saw a control in a reentrant and made for it. Checked the # and - bzzzt - wrong answer. Headed east toward a collecting trail to start again. Luckily I hit on a control which was on my map (#6) and relocated from that - zipped over the hill to #5, back to #6 and caught the remaining controls cleanly.

Therefore, I was both hurt and helped by the large number of controls set out in the woods. I also wasn't using the compass, and that would have prevented the wandering off line that I experienced.

Great fun, though. Courses were well laid out and it seemed like everyone had a good time. Kudos to the crew!

Hiking 50:00 [3]

Hiking some trails in Powder Mills as a cool down and stretch out from the relay championships. Too nice a day to sit around.

Orienteering race (Red Course) 1:07:04 [4] 4.59 km (14:37 / km) +150m 12:34 / km
weight:207lbs

US Middle Distance Championships - Red Course

For my first A-meet, wanted to work on some basics and especially staying on the map. Was successful in that regard, although it probably slowed down my overall time.

Minor bobble on #4, tried to minimize contour lines, but ended up too far W of the control, but managed to relocate quickly. Remaining controls hit pretty cleanly.

Nice race and fun atmosphere. Will post splits later.

Orienteering race (Sprint 3) 26:01 [5] 2.6 km (10:00 / km)

US Middle Distance Championships - Sprint Course

#1 - #3 were fine. Then tried to go too fast & didn't pay enough attention to the map. Inexplicably took wrong direction out of #3 and ended up at the trout pond, then had to backtrack all the way along the powerlines to #4. Got caught trying to slog through a swamp on the way to #5, when going along the path would have been FAR easier, then went to #6, thought it was the wrong control #, checked out #14, realized I was just being stupid and went back to #6. At this point I settled down and started paying attention to the map - hmmm - what an idea. Remaining controls were better, but I had lost too much time at that point. Probably could have shaved 3-4 minutes off the total time.

I do this sort of thing on Sprints all the time. Need to work on it.
