Adventure Racing race 7:40:00 [3]

It's been over two years since I've been able to log an adventure race! The last one I did was RockstAR in 2019 with Mike!

Amber and I were signed up for STT in May of 2020, and then had Alisha and Kristen join us to make a fun foursome for the Trek course on Saturday. I felt more nervous than I thought I should have because it had been so long away from racing.

We got real lucky with the weather and I'd say it was darned near perfect for racing. Kristen brought a kayak cart that we used to transport both of our canoes down to the water. It was a bit finicky, but still easier I think than carrying them both, especially up the hill at the end of the paddle!

The paddle went smoothly. It was a bit windier than expected at times, but lots of fun. Our transitions always felt efficient but unhurried. Given the staggered start times, I was surprised at how many other people we seemed to be around, especially at the beginning of the course.

I really enjoyed all of the bike sections, especially since Amber and I had unknowingly done most of the course when we were up there for a weekend in April, so none of the hills came as a surprise, and if anything they felt much easier at the end of a good biking season. The super mucky trail / hike a bike section wasn't as bad as I expected, and my "it never always get worse mantra" held true and it was over fairly quickly.

The treks were my least favourite. I was worried about my achilles, especially on the muddy downhills, and felt like I wasted a lot of emotional energy dealing with this. By the time we did the advanced trek, I wasn't really enjoying trekking and was happy to be getting back on the bikes for the short ride to the finish.

All in all, it was a fun, smooth, and successful day with great company. One thing that I haven't done a lot of in the absence of races is really suffer a bit out there on long days, so if there was anything that felt untrained, it was that! Cleaning up my gear at home yesterday, I was thinking about how much I couldn't wait for Sean to announce what next year would look like!

Paddling 45:00 [3]

Paddle back in on Sunday morning. Finley is always really sad when the trip is over, so we softened the blow with a nice lunch on the patio at Sawdust City. On the way home, he worked on his annual trip video that he always puts together. We felt very lucky to have scored such great weather and a stellar campsite!
