Cycling (MTB) 15:00 [3] 3.0 km (12.0 kph) +100m
shoes: Blur

Warm up and bike check on the bit of the climb that was not marked the day before. Some more single track than what I found the night before but also some steep bits. Came back down the bottom of the downhill route which was interesting!!!! I bottled it at one point and had trouble standing up with the bike.

Relentless24. The plan was to experiment with a quicker start than I have used for my two other 24s. I set off running to be towards the front and still had the leaders in site up the top of the first big fireroad climb (only used on the first half lap) but was still behind last years winner Alex Slaven so not too stupid. I setteled in trying to be efficent but pushing on at a good pace rather than holding back at the start. Inital full laps were somthing like 43, 45, 48, 48,... need the full results to be sure.

I was hoping that my pace would fall back a bit and then be sustainable but in practice I just got slower ans slower virtualy all the way though and even with the faster start it still only took about 6 hours before Alex came up and lapped me. He then looked to take a long pit as he cam back past me at olmost exactly the same point the next lap.

One lap stats from last with lights lap.

Test lap for Relentless24. Good pace as I plan to start the race. More fire road than last year on a shorter lap but quite a lot the same or reversed from last year. Route was not marked properly yet up the start of the second bit of the figure of 8 and I retraced a bit but finaly found my way up to the correct track at the top.

A spin around three brooks in the dark again checking lights. No dodgy speed input stuff so looking better. Also got rear crossmax new spoke fixed and setup with the smart sam, seamed to be OK.

A lap around Cawm Carn in the dark to check out the lights and new front smart sam tyre (need spokes fixing on back before fitting there). Actualy quite a few people out. There were some finishing as I set out and I past a group of 4 while out. Still very wet not suprisingly so I was suprised how quick I did as I was not pushing stupidly hard.

Need to redo the contacts on the wheel sensor conection as I was getting too much spike and miss activity. I think 2 months on the back of the van in the weather has got them too corroded.

Orienteering race 32:43 [5] **** 5.1 km (6:25 / km) +100m 5:51 / km

VHI relay leg 3 of 4. Bev ran a short leg first and came in 3rd with the short pack. MarkS then did the middle leg and came in in the lead to hand over to me but with an English team just 30secs back. So I set off first 3rd leg but doing the long course with Charlie Adams also doing the long 30 seconds back. I lost half the lead at no 1 but then was OK and Charlie did not come by till no 5. he lead most of the way from there although I did take a few different lines on occasions. Jonathan Emberton apeared about half way around doing the Middle length. Coming back towards 16 I had to work hard to get back up closer to Charlie having droped about 100m back. Got within 20m by the flag but it's a good job Charlie knew where it was. Heading out of it though he was 45 degrees off line and I had to navigate myself back in the lead though the last 3 giving everything I had left. Came in 4th just behind jonathan but in front of charlie. 2 teams doing short for leg 3 had been in a good 5 minutes.

Fairly pleased with my run 2 minutes slower than the first leg long runners but still about as good as I could of done. Unfortunatly Alice on the last short leg did not have a very good run and we droped a few more places by the end.

Afan. Went to do penturch or whatever it is called. Having followed the wall diversion route (potential landslide danger) to the start there was a notice saying it was shut for harvesting which I ignored. There was big harvesting going on up the big double track climb and the track was all cloged with brashings. I ended up spending about 10 minutes pushing and carrying directly up through the wood. After that the track was all right but has clearly been shut for a while as the vegitation is encroching. the sidewinder bit was very wet with lots of pudels. Just taking it fairly steady as very wey and sliperly.
