Buffalo Grove GC. First time here. Long walk from the train through the funky, shabby older section of Buffalo Grove. Then a big mall that is in desperate shape. Nevertheless the town fathers apparently want to rip out this GC to build another mall and office park in hopes of reviving the local economy.

Nice course. Played with a couple affable 70-yr olds who liked to talk. But I'm certainly glad I moved into the City 35 years ago instead of remaining out here in the NW suburbs to become a brain-dead arch-conservative.

Longwood CC, Crete. With Larry. Another cold, wet day. No one at the golf course, including the managers. So we teed off and played the front nine...who's to say no? Unless surrounded by a 10' fence, a golf course can be played by anyone, at any time. Just like an O map.

At the turn, we came in and paid our $15 green fees (fall rates) and continued. A pleasant day. Larry taking off for Singapore for the winter. So this may be my last social game of golf this year.

Edgebrook GC, Morton Grove. Was headed north to Libertyville at 8am on the commuter train, when I looked out the window and saw wet and gray...and approaching a forest preserve golf course that I could play quickly (par 66 - 4600yds) and get back home. So I got off the train and bushwacked through the woods to the gc and had a very nice low-scoring round.

Took 7 strokes off my PR for this course, set last year. All because of the par 34 back nine, where I bogied or parred every hole. All on a very wet, gray, cold day when I really didn't want to go up to Libertyville and pay $75 to play. Maybe Friday.

Playing with Larry tomorrow before he takes off for the Far East for the winter. Larry and his wife were at McCormick Place last night to watch Obama's victory speech. Said it was historic.

Glen Ellyn Village Links. Cold, gray day. But thanks to Standard Time, lots of light in the morning. So no problem getting an early start and being one of the first of very few to tee off at this nice suburban 27-hole course. No wind. Shot reasonably well. Took 9 strokes off my PR for this course.

This is just one of 90+ golf courses I can reach on public transit from my home in Chicago in a couple hours. As a result, I can play all season and not repeat a single golf course...and have a fresh challenge each time I tee off. It is like having 90+ O maps right outside your door...probably not going to happen any time soon, even in the nordic countries. So on yet another level, doesn't playing golf make sense?
