Orienteering 1:33:36 [3] 10.31 km (9:05 / km) +230m 8:10 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

Trip out with the O maps of Moseley Green and Danby Lodge. Aim of going slow enough to keep knee happy and to try and keep off roads/tracks/paths/rides and stay in terrain to justify the lack of speed.

Never before realised just how bad the Moseley Green map is. Found lots that didn't fit, particularly on the hill where 121 and 122 were at the night-o. Refound 118 with no problems. 124 was indeed in a massive patch of unmapped open.

Struggled on the hill going into Danby Lodge so cut short and stayed on the west side only, which was very nice. Finished off with a tour of mine shafts at the top.

Lovely day. Went for a 10 mile walk after to enjoy the sunshine. Found an adder and a lizard.

Event: League 6

Orienteering race (NGOC League) 44:54 [3] 7.2 km (6:14 / km) +275m 5:14 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

NGOC League at Cleeve Hill. 6.7km blue.

Knew I didn't have the raw running pace to do very well today and struggled with the heat. Still, at least the knee felt better than it has done recently.

Orienteering was generally pretty easy and could see people most of the time. Didn't notice at the time that 3 was wrong but thinking afterwards I exited to the path to the east of where mapped.

Quite good on the harder bit around 5/6 - mostly from seeing people exit and then choosing to contour on 5-6. Went the shortest flattest route 7-8 and have a brief chat to David Palmer as we struggled to walk up the hill.

Went into 8 thinking it was 9 so good I checked map just before leaving. Hill did it for me in terms of running ability and felt like I was barely moving - helped by wind a bit on way back. Took 3 controls to overtake Nick Dennis, 6 for Greg/Tim/Andy and all of those were only down to them making mistakes.

Didn't get lured into blindly following on 15 as the paths were quite obvious. Still willing to follow but picked the person who went to the control rather than overshoot by 150m.

Tried a bit too hard towards the end as up against Phil Murray (for the second time in the race). Took advantage of the grass and the sunshine and collapsed at the finish for 10 mins or so to recover.

Results surprisingly good given not in good form at all and pace so slow. Running much worse than I did at Cranham but not disgraced anywhere near as badly.

Note

Seems that at Cleeve there were 21 M/W 20/21s there out of 140ish. As a percentage is that a record for any open orienteering race in recent years?

Run from Portishead. Trying to take it gently. Knee was pretty much fine until the marina then getting steadily worse. Too much hard running on tarmac.
