Run race (Around The Bay) 2:55:36 [3] 30.08 km (5:50 / km)

Oh boy.. what a race!. Wanted to get ATB off my list as the oldest race in north america. Now I do but have to go back for some unfinished business! Goal was 2:30 & I fell wayyy short!

ATB was initially to be my B race but with the event past few weeks, was asked to make it a good long run - if only I could listen to others !!

First thing that came to my mind when hermes asked me how my race went was ` Like I was on a dinner date with princess of 'Kingdom of Misery' - couldn't leave as was hungry but couldn't go through with it either! Haha!

Signed up a little take & hence had the privilege of starting all the way back, behind about 7500 people - only took about 4 mins to get to the start line after the race start and had fun navigating through them before settling down.

Surprisingly enough run started really well hitting 3:42 minkm & 914bpm for the first time! First 11k was awesome avg 5 min/km as I was able to stick with 2:30 pace bunnies. Then when I was forced to stop for water at 11k waterstation, my legs wouldn`t fire & I lost my bunnies! Felt this weird pain in my glutes & couldn`t shake it for the next 9k or so loosing all the time I made & having interesting times all the way. I generally find it hard to stop & start again during a long run but this was nothing like ever before!
Then comes the big downhill followed by a crazy uphill part of which I had to walk!

Luckily found this girl 5k from the finish with head phones on & loud music. Road to finish now was mostly flat & downhill in the end - I found my perfect bunny. Didn`t realize she was on a relay team!. For the last 5k all I could see was her pink shoes & had to match her stride to stride - she was my first class ticket to the finish line! Her pace kept going up & up & so was mine from 7min to 4min/k. About 500m from finish her finish run kicked in & she left for dead! Had to almost crawl to the finish line in the last 100m.

All in all a good day - tons of people (literally!) & little painful but fun on the course. The more road runs I do, the more I like trails !!!

One of my fav workouts - how low can you goÉÉ

Main with 50 free starting from 65sec down to as low as anyone can go!. I got down to 51 - last one swimming & if not for the screw up with the flip turn, could have gotten 1 or 2 more.

Surprisingly felt great during the entire workout. May be the sleep or extra rest I have been getting.

Quads were a little sore from yesterday due to using big fins for some kick pieces. Plus order from the coach was do it only if I feel comfortable & up for it, which I did.
Main set of 6 x 2 mins at 8.5mph & 3 mins zone 1-2. Had to cut down on the warm down as was getting tired!

The last 10-12 days were a total write off. Came down with a flu & head ache! When I went to my doc, he asked for some blood work & ECG - totally throwing me of. When the results came back, there was nothing physically wrong. Been asked to monitor for another 2 -3 weeks and get back to him!

Flu & weird temp up and downs are gone now leaving me generally fatigued. I need to figureout what exactly going on now.

Day #2:

After a hard but awesome day on the course and fun times at the dinner, I decided to go over the map & plan for today. I felt really happy about my navigation yesterday & some how found it easier compared to back home! So at the start I was confident about the navigation today & would meet our goal today if we can pace it well.

Plan : 18, 15, 52, 83, 50, 62, 67, 66, 26, 36, 38, 23, 39, 49, 43, 44, 33
Actual: 18, 15, 52, 83, 50, 62, 67, 66, 26, 38, 23, 39, 49, 43

So, It was time to go east today and hence on to 18 with a small road run. When suiting up with snow shoes, saw getawaystix, herness, bash, bent flying past us - thought that would be the last time we see them for the rest of the day and I was right :).

We also had this coed team of two on snowshoes on our tail & wanted to lose them quickly. My team mate looked like he was feeling better today & was carrying a lighter pack - so we decided to start a little harder. 18, 15 were easy pickings. Animal-0 & Beez also had similar plan for atleast half the controls & they got to 15 seconds before us and were onto 83. Animal-0 provided us with some entertainment out of 15 & it was time to beat them to 83. While they went back to the trail, we got 52 quickly & very quickly 83. We got their sec after Animal-0 & Beez who came straight from 15 - we were on a roll today. Instead of going straight to 62, we decided to get 50 to make it easier on the way back. Got to 50 easily although there were a few tense moments with few stretches of this icy sheets on water. By the time we got to 50, saw the coed team who we had left behind crossing the lake right in the middle. That gave us some confidence the we sprinted across back to the trails and quickly got to 62. Now, we were racing with this other co-ed team where the guy was on skies and the girl on snowshoes. We leap flogged them to 62, 77, 66 & got them before them. The guy actually make skiing xc & through the crazy terrain so easy while the girl was pushing hard to keep up with him!

From 66 straight to the road cross & onto 26. Our navigation was bang on & we didn't waste any time looking for controls! Then we saw DD & escandido (looking a little pale & all bundled up!) in the opposite direction but with a dog which threw me off a bit but I was soo burried in the map that I couldn't process the fact paul was looking a little pale & why they had a dog with them ! The dog was very friendly and I spent couple mins with him while my team make caught up to me but buddy decided to stick with them.

We got to the road crossing and now our good roll & luck was about to change! The land lady was running towards us. The coed team decided to continue on ignoring her & she came to us. We were on the banks but contemplating crossing the lake but she wanted us to stay away from water.
She had just seen this guy go under & they had a dog! I could figure out it was escandio who went under... The woman had seen the map & compass in my hand and recognized that we were orienteering and I didn`t want to deny that nor reveal any more info & hence decided to go up & around the lake which costed us a lot of time!

By the time we got to 26, we were already past our cutoff time & hence decided to skip 36 & go straight to 38. Got to 23 & 39 easily & then to 49. Animal-0 & beez had warned me that river at 49 was not crossable but I scouted around and found a patch to cross but my partner was not comfortable with it & hence we decided to backtrack which costed us some more time. We got to 43 easily & had about 50mins left & hence continued onto 33 but my team mate was little concerned and that he wouldn`t make it finish line on time. So we bailed on 33 halfway through & got back on the trail, walked back to the finish. We had about 22 mins to spare!

Came in 3rd in all male category but lost 2nd place by 8 points!
All in all awesome two days of racing, nice people all around and very good organization! Hope to go back next year!!!

Snowgaine race (CYNO) 7:36:00 [4]
rhr:58 slept:4.0 shoes: XA PRO 3D ULTRA

Started pretty late on friday with Animal-0, beez & got stuck in traffic and spent about 30 mins just a kilometer away from my place!

Decided to circumnavigate lake Ontario on this so & hence entered US from Gananoque. At the border no one else was there but for us & after a long time met this US border officer who was smiling!!! As soon as we said we are going to pulaski, he was like "you going for that race??". Apparently a few of us went through that border! While waiting for some paper work, these two big guys walked into the office inquiring about cow ( a real cow!) - leave the rest for your imagination!

Day#1 - After long drive and 5hrs of sleep, had a good start to the day when we saw about 10 or so familiar faces at the brakefast !

Got the the race headquarters about 75mins before the start and met my partner for the first time! Maps were handed out & we decided to go west today

Plan : 41, 64, 56, 85, 45, 21, 37, 65, 63, 53, 48, 55, 51, 43, 44, 33
Actual: 41, 64, 56, 85, 45, 21, 65, 63, 53, 48, 55, 51, 42, 34, 35, 22

Wanted to start easy & get to now my partner a little better - we decided to go west and got 41, 64, 56, 85 easily. And then long run to 45, this time on snowmobile trail. My partners's rental snowshoes kept coming off and we realized he was carrying little heavier pack and we slowed down a bit. Were able to get 45, 21 but skipped 37 to collect it on the way back. Got to 65,63, 53 easily and back on to the trail towards 48. By now I had transferred soem stuff from my partner's pack to mine & we were able to run on trails. Trailed Paul & Chris on the trail before they decided to go north along the stream to 48 while we decided to stick to the trail & attack from the east. DD & Escandido made it to the control 5 mins ahead of us. Now onto 55 - decided to take bearing but avoiding hills.

At 55, we were running behind on our schedule & hence decided to skip 37 and went to 51. Since we were slow, decided to stick to the trails & attack 43 from east and picked up 42 along the way. Since we were running behind on time & little concerned about not making back in time, we decided to get to 34 instead of 43 there by moving towards the finish. Got 34, 35 easily & on the way to 22, running free flew past us. So decided to tuck in behind then to the finish line. Got back in with about 22 mins to spare!
