Secret mission in Leeds...

AIRE Yockenthwaite

The weather forecast was horrendous and it was correct.
Weather in the valley at parking / assembly was fine, and it was still no problem on the ascent to the start.

All the maps were stuck together in the box, but once that obstacle was overcome I hit #1 and #2 fine (although the trig for #2 was visible from #1...)
#3 Weather still ok. Drifted west and hit the hole east of #14, but this did at least give a good attack point. 30s
#4 Dropped far too low despite having noted that I only needed to descend 3 or 4 contours and thinking as I ran downhill ‘I am going too far downhill’... 2m
#5 This looked tricky, so I made sure I followed the linear hills into the flag. Spiked. The wind and rain were picking up and the mist was coming down by this stage.
#6 This would have been a trek in good conditions, and as I ascended the weather was getting progressively worse, especially after crossing the wall. Visibility was very limited and it was difficult to open my eyes sufficiently to read the map detail with the driving wind and rain. The marshes were much vaguer than shown, and despite getting within 75m or so of the control, it took me another 8m to locate it.
#7 Progressively becoming more difficult to see and hold / fold map. 2m
#8 Decided that continuing is not sensible given how cold I am; resolve to visit a few controls on the way back.
#9 Hit this one quite well and very briefly consider attempting to finish the course, but after falling flat in the peat and realising even my legs have gone numb, the priority is getting off the hill asap.

Shame about the weather – it appears that it was better earlier on as all finishers on the Black started before 1045 – 7 retirals and only 5 finishers.

Looked at purchasing some new shoes but none were suitable, hence forced to run in trainers... Not ideal.
Pleasant day and area, though took it very carefully on the limestone pavements / generally rocky terrain.
Route choice, rather than fine navigation, was the order of the day, although selecting the best route was complicated as a result of localised rock patches (correctly unmapped, but presenting an appreciable impediment to running).

#3 Right choice I think.
#6 Wrong choice. Runnability higher up was better than expected and the hill was not as steep as it looks from the map making both other main options superior. 2m
#7 I ended up one valley north somehow, but a handily placed control on the crag confirmed this permitting quick rectification. 20s
#10 Nothing between the two routes here I would guess.
#11 Lots of different options here; I stuck to the simplest, but was very hesitant at each decision point. 1m
#14 Went high out of #13 but this was a waste of effort as #14 was very low. 15s
#17 Maintained height (and think this was the best route) but suffered contouring on the rocky ground.

4th, only 8min down on Schorah who must have been cruising.
