The Bulgarians feed me well again last night and I'm sufficently hydrated and recuperated from yesterday's race, sore, of course, but not as bad as from TT middle course. Mentally I feel calm and ready. Physically, however, I am not ready and I notice that I am running too fast the first few controls. And I don't stop...and I make mistakes. First on #4 where I unsuccessfully try to contour around the hills and lose contact with the map. And I proceed to really blow it on #6, not paying enough attention to the compass, so easy to get thrown of the proper direction in those sinuous "streams". No clue where I am, cliffs help but not enough, aha, a Russian girl, on the other hand, is big help, and I follow her to the control. No more mistakes I tell myself but the focus is gone and I'm still frazzled. I hit what I think is my #7, don't check control code, major fail as I find out at the finish. Rest of the course was slow but mostly accurate.
Quite dissapointed, of course. My performance was worse than I expected. Sulking does not do me any good, and so I take away from these races the motivation to train harder. This was a tremendous experience for me, my first world cup, a beautiful disaster that I will treasure as continue on this journey of becoming the best orienteer that I can be. Plus, this competition was great fun, hanging out in sunny Spain, making new friends, enjoying the amazing terrain and scenery, eating delicious food..
