Another question for the group:
Looking to buy a smaller pack for sprint races (8-24 hrs).
Intrigued by Ultimate Direction FastPacks.
Does anyone have any experience with these or any other recommendations?
This year I used the
Salomon Skin Pro 10 Set for 8 hr races since it's really comfortable for running. I'd want more volume for 24 hr races. I've still got some older packs that will work but if I were shopping for 2020, I'd look at whatever replaces the Salomon Skin Pro 15 Set. (I think they may be updating the design.)
My technique here is to be terrible at packing, then you can use a 24 hr pack for short races and your expedition pack for 24 hr races.
I just picked up a Salomon ADV Skin 12 pack. It's awesome and would would work for something in the 8-12 hour range, probably even 18. Maybe 24 but only if someone else on the team had a larger pack for extra clothes.
Hey! No pack is necessary if someone on your team has a big enough pack, brilliant! I have fallen victim to this many times... same goes for water capacity. I always seem to end up thirsty and out of food.
I use the Salomon ADV Skin 12L pack for ultra trail races. It's a great pack but I haven't used it for AR because I think bushwhacking could be hard on that fabric. Some of the other Salomon packs are more durable - but the ADV Skin packs are super light and comfortable.
Thanks guys! I'll probably end up getting more than one, as I need something like an ultra-running vest for a couple of burly trail runs I'm doing this year. Any other suggestions are very welcome!
Good plan! I would never admit how many "more than one" packs I have. :)
