BROC Course Setting

Poor route to the far SW control. Forgot there was an extra reentrant junction I had to pass before the main one. Then adjusted and attacked was S on the spur. Ironically my original mistake was actually the most direct route and I should have never corrected it.

Also set the 2nd beginner control on an adjacent reentrant 20m to early. I wasn't paying enough attention to the map and confirming where I had plotted it.

Had to go back and reset the control on PC. I thought I got to the right bend in PC but thought it was too early and leaving the control took longer. I drove back to move it after I got the first group started.

BROC Beginner course w/Nut/E
Nut is getting much more capable at navigating and can do a lot on her own. Orienting and knowing which way to go is becoming natural. She can pick up several (but not all) features on the map. We worked on taking bearings some today. She was struggling with motivation today a bit though. We opted to add one of the advanced points that was on the way but then got emotionally drained so we decided to drop a beginner point.

E was happy to tag along and learn some things too. She was good encouragement to keep going. She does have a hard time moving through the woods still though with her shorter legs.

Mountain Biking 34:19 [2] 7.94 mi (13.9 mph) +178ft
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

Given Earl's condition we decided it was best to portage the boat back ASAP and get back to the cars. From there we could make any decisions on more riding/running. So we road straight to Bennett Springs. Earl was moving slow on the flat ride along Carvins Cove Rd. I wasn't even able to pace him.

Road Running 36:02 [1] 2.55 mi (14:08 / mi) +42ft 13:55 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4 (DkBlue)

Dropped the bikes in the woods near the parking lot and then ran back to the boat on paved and dirt roads. Earl's energy/pace improved some towards the end.

Paddling (2p Kayak) 57:07 [2] 3.99 mi (4.2 mph)

Beautiful moonlit paddle back across the glass-smooth lake. Made 1 pit stop.
3 AM

Portage 31:33 [2] 1.37 mi (23:02 / mi) +197ft 20:16 / mi

Portaged the boat back up the trail to the cars.

Trail Running 47:20 [3] 3.97 mi (11:55 / mi) +667ft 10:17 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4 (DkBlue)

We had already pretty much decided at this point it was best for Earl to head home. This gave me the opportunity to get back to my bike for some more riding and ride it back to the cars so I wouldn't have to go pick it up.

I took the shortest route back to the bike which was up and over the mountain. Stayed as low on the ridge as possible though.

Felt good. Was able to run the whole way up and down.
4 AM

Mountain Biking 1:54:19 [2] 12.65 mi (6.6 mph) +1653ft
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

Ride back to the cars. I was hoping I'd be able to add some riding over towards Happy Valley but after 4Gorges I could tell it would be pushing my self-imposed time limit of 12 hours. I also didn't get in any big climbs. We had planned to ride the fire road up Brushy from Hanging Rock.

Enjoyed 4Gorges and Lakeside.

I saw tons of European Hornets (mostly on 4Gorges). They kept flying into my bike lights and therefore I kept riding into them. I think these might have been what stung me two weeks ago.

Carvins Cove Dusk to Dawn
Prepared this myself and Earl did it with me. Had planned to base out of the Boat Launch parking lot but I called on my way there to confirm feasibility and they said they closed earlier and we couldn't leave our cars there. I should have called earlier but the website did not indicate this at all so I thought we'd be ok.

We decided to start from Timberview instead. To make this work we had to portage the boats to/from the cove and use the paddle to get us closer to the trek which meant paddling back at the end and leaving our bikes at Bennett Springs. This wasn't too big of a deal though.

Earl ended up struggling quite a bit so we shortened the bike and came right back to the cars. I used the remaining time I had to go get my bike and ride it back. Everything worked out pretty well. I didn't do nearly as much biking as I wanted to though. And the pace was really slow for a good bit. This wasn't the worst thing since it's only two weeks to Nationals but I probably could have managed a higher pace and still been ok.

Legs felt good and strong!
7 PM

Portage 21:41 [3] 1.36 mi (15:56 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4 (DkBlue)

Portage to the Cove. Slight downhill.

Paddling (2p Kayak) 55:00 [2] 4.42 mi (4.8 mph) +13ft

Paddle across the cove. Passed by the boat launch shortly before boats were supposed to be off the water. No one else was on the water.

Almost landed in one spot but realized it made more sense to land closer to the parking area to shorten our trek to the boat.
8 PM

Trail Running 4:18:59 [2] 13.71 mi (18:53 / mi) +3187ft 15:29 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4 (DkBlue)

Trek up the ridge to Tinker and then across to McAfee's and down to the parking lot.

We shwacked up the ridge using some waypoints I picked. Ridge was clear and we found our points pretty easily. Earl started to slow on the final approach. We took a nice break to enjoy the view and cool breeze.

Earl continued to get slower along the ridge and ran out of water halfway. I was still good so I held back but he was getting to the point were he needed a lot. Luckily there was a spring at the campsite below McAfees. Earl filled back up and I replaced what Earl drank of mine.

We took another break atop McAfees, longer this time. And then we slowly descended, walking quite a bit.

Straley Valley w/Zitch
Z's first official run since surgery. On-leash. Took him the to FS road for sure footing. Will probably do this for a few runs before getting back into the woods.

I was stiff at the start. Felt better after a pit stop towards the end.
