Adventure Racing (Wilderness Traverse) 15:30:00 [3]

Wilderness Traverse with Simpy, Double_Downon11, and IronParent as team BiT #4:

- This is hands down the best race of the year in north-eastern North America and a hugely competitive contingent showed up which was nice to see

- Love the fact that this race takes me places I’d otherwise not see (particularly the paddle stage and the coasteering)

- The course was tough, probably the toughest WT so far; but my teammates were great and so solid throughout; they were very fit and I felt inadequate

- Hack of the race was Double_Downon11’s suggestion to backtrack out of CP11 by 25 mins and take the roads via Parry Sound to CP12; even with a 50 minute bike hike into CP12 from the road and a 10 minute mechanical for DD_on11’s flat, I think we may get the fastest split on that leg

- Although my feet were ice blocks on the bike (especially the road sections), my body and hands held up to the cold temps just fine

- Simpy and I had a good system to share navigation and thus hopefully relieve nav fatigue; I navigated the paddle and Simpy navigated the bike and trekking stages (if we had two bike map boards I could have helped some more - Simpy's map board is somewhere in a ditch on the side of a highway!); the trek nav was really tough this year and even though there was one or two bobbles Simpy did such an amazing job with often featureless terrain (he absolutely nailed keeping track of our location in the dark on the coasteering)

- I smashed my helmet into DD_on11’s face pretty hard while trying to fix his flat tire, so hard he was wobbly and stumbled over into the bushes; it was captured on film by Brad and I just hope it never makes it to video; so sorry Chris

- I suffered from sleep monsters considerably from 11pm until 8am except when on technical bike sections (I actually fell asleep for a few seconds on a road bike section around 8am); caffeinated gels helped slightly but not enough; I found my energy really drained when I was tired

- Bob, Brad, Barb and the race volunteers (Wayne, Sally, Chetan, Iris, Amber, Bill, and many more I’m probably forgetting) really did a superb job and delivered a race that felt like a remote expedition

During the race I commented to my teammates that next year I’d just like to volunteer and perhaps man one of the remote CPs. Upon reflection the day after, however, I have the urge to get out there again and perhaps redeem ourselves from errors we committed this race. So I’ll hopefully be there next year racing again!

Biking (Road) 1:27:00 [3] 37.7 km (26.0 kph)

Tough first 50 mins as it was quite cold (11degrees to start) even with gloves, buff and light fleece. Gorgeous sunrise helped. May be my last ride in unless I think of acquiring cold weather riding gear.

Biking (Road) 1:23:18 [3] 36.0 km (25.9 kph)

Took one short cut through a construction zone since the workers were gone for the day. Felt fast in the cooler temps and easy winds.

Running (Humber trail) 52:00 [3]

Lunch time run. Did an out and back on the Humber West Trail.

Biking (Road) 1:30:00 [3] 37.7 km (25.1 kph)

Ride into work. Was chilly to start, but once the sun hit me it started to get better.

Biking (Road) 1:44:00 [3] 37.7 km (21.8 kph)

Much nicer temps compared to the past 2 weeks plus a not too bad westerly wind translated into a faster ride back home.

Biking (Road) 1:30:00 [3] 37.5 km (25.0 kph)

Beauty morning ride into work with the sun rising...but gonna pay for it this evening on the ride home in hot humid conditions.

Biking (Road) 1:56:30 [3] 37.5 km (19.3 kph)

Ride back from work. Started hot and steamy, but I didn't think it was too bad...until I was really low on energy with 30 mins left in the commute. Wind was not a help, again. I've got a good route down now, which utilizes, in the city, Claireville conservation area and the west humber trail. North of Brampton I take Innis lake road for a very long stretch.

Biking (Rail Trail) 2:02:00 [3] 41.0 km (20.2 kph)

Rail trail with erin from forks of credit to Orton on the cataract-elora rail trail. We covered half the distance of the trail on the out and back.
