Adventure Race 7:45:00 [3]

With one full year of racing under our belts, Escondido and I were really pumped to be back at RockstAR for what was sure to be a fun race. This year due to John's injuries, we had Matt join us last minute, and he pushed really well considering he was suffering from heat stroke/exhaustion and hadn't been training as much as we have been.

It was a beautiful day for a race and the seamless organization and energetic atmosphere from a racer's point of view made it even more enjoyable!

After getting a good spot towards the front of the bike pack, we pushed forward for the first stage of the mountain bike race. I wiped out taking one turn too fast/out of control on the dusty sand towards the beginning. Luckily no injuries, was easy enough to get going again. I was not in the best mindset for the bike and I think more experience on the trails and also racing will help me calm down and not get so frustrated. After we reached the road, I hooked into Escondido's tow and we charged on, even passing teams on the uphill - this really helped ease the pain I was starting to feel in my knee and also obviously helped us gain more power and speed as a team.

We made it through the bike in what we had hoped for time and without any repairs which was awesome. Back at the transition area, we changed shoes, grabbed some food and headed out for the second portion - trekking and paddling. Our original plan was to stay around the base at the south and pick up all the points and then maybe head north for more. But after spending about 40 minutes bushwacking without success of locating the flag, we switched gears and opted for our first plan which was to get all the points in the north section.

Heading out on the paddle, we were pretty strong across the lake and upon arrival, quickly moved to get our first CP and close to shore then set out to get the farther ones. We definitely improved from last year and were able to run this...also the salt tabs Escondido brought did provide some benefits to any cramping muscles. It was around this time that Matt started to feel the heat so we switched up the jog with a walk and kept on alternating for the rest of the race. With great nav from Escondido we managed to get all the CPs we had planned in good time and then made it back for check in at the camp.

The last hour and a half we moved a bit slower but still managed to work through our plan of getting the CPs closest to the hub. The slingshot was a bit dissappointing that you couldn't even get 1/2 points for attempting seeing as not many teams got that CP but at least we tried and if it's there next year, we might take a different strategy.

With a run to the finish line, we came in with 1300 points, and considering we had some small set backs it was a great finish and was enough to put us in 3rd place in the coed team of three for the 8 hour race.

A really fun race and thanks to my teammates Escondido and Matt for encouraging and helping me during the bike and providing good team work throughout...already looking forward to next year's RockstAR!
