Miami Whitewater put out last 6 stands, delivered SI units to 5 other controls. Did a check of a few others where I had found tracks (human) while putting out controls earlier in the week. Off trail traffic in this park is low enough that tracks merit curious inspection.

Setting controls at Miami Whitewater. Snow depth varied from 4 or 5 inches to 8 or more depending how sunny or shaded the area. Found a Great Horned Owl on a nest, so had to move two controls that were too close.

Miami Whitewater. About 8 inches of snow. Many park roads remain closed, so there's a lot of extra distance in setting controls. Put out 11 in the woods stands, and checked 4 other control sites that I passed. Ran short of daylight and didn't get as many done as I had hoped.

O' training at Union County. Set up a map puzzle relay in the 6/7 grade hallway with several obstacles that had to be jumped over or rolled under.

Red course at Bear Creek set by Mintore. Temperatures stayed below 10 F and the winds kept the apparent temperature well below zero.

Red consisted of a 3.1 km brown (38:00), followed by a much more rugged 3.9 km course (1:04:33)

orienteering 5:50 [3] 0.3 km (19:27 / km)

One of Thurston's A-maze-ing training activities.

Possum Creek. The usual thick vegetation and obligatory wet foot stream crossing. Temperature started out at 32 F, but plunged through the 20's on bitter north winds, which also brought a couple brief snow squalls. Wind chills around zero and the brief but blinding snow drove more than one competitor to early retirement.

At one point, I popped out on a trail, paused to verify I was on the correct one, and as I looked down at the map, some kind of critter popped around the bend in front of me and flew past at warp speed, catching me totally by surprise.

Half expecting to see a bolting deer, I looked up quickly enough to catch a quick glimpse of Luke Bantz scampering away. Its a good thing he missed me - at that speed, the collision would have been akin to a Formula One hitting a brick wall! Couldn't believe I had been caught so unaware!

UC training at Mounds. Ran with the camera, leapfrogging the kids to get some pix for the yearbook. It didn't take long for them to start making jokes about wormholes and asking if I knew how to apparate. Hey, they just needed to go faster!
