Miami Middletown Campus - Course 2 - a zigzag through the hilly campus - back and forth, up and down.

orienteering race 18:52 [5] *** 2.2 km (8:35 / km)
15c

Course 1 started out a little woodsier, with controls in culverts and the drain of an overgrown marshy retention pond, then up the hill into the campus for a back and forth tour among the buildings.

weights / strength 20:00 [2]
weight:163lbs

Re-installed permanent course post at Rentschler. Unfortunately the half inch hole that the scouts had drilled through the base was not wide enough for the five eights piece of rebar I brought, so I had to carry the post out of the woods and take it to the ranger's workshop to borrow a drill. But it is in now, good and deep, with a nice rebar anchor, so I hope that it won't get pulled out again.

Orienteering training program for Butler County Metroparks and SWCD staff. Walked with them to a few easy controls after we went over maps and some orienteering basics.

mapping - field checking 2:00:00 [1] ***

Miami Middletown Campus. Checking control locations and making map updates. Unfortunately many of the lesser trails are very overgrown and if they don't get maintenance soon, they may disappear. Very disappointing. Fortunately, we won't need to use those particular areas for next weekend's sprints.

mapping - field checking 2:00:00 [1] ***

Started fieldwork on Tawawa Park. This should be an excellent area for future sprints, middle and maybe score O. Loads of trails, shelters, small lakes, and a very interesting mix of woods and open areas.

Checking control locations and updating East Quad area of Miami Natural Areas map. The area was originally mapped at 1:10,000 ISOM and I'm gradually trying to upgrade detail and symbols in the campus portion to make it more interesting for shorter sprint type races.

orienteering race 17:46 [5] *** 2.2 km (8:05 / km)
11c weight:164lbs shoes: Icebug 2012

Sprint 3 at Sharon Woods set by Cedarcreek. A fun sprint. Interesting to hear how much discussion there was about the need for map updates. I think perhaps we in OCIN have become too used to near perfect maps. Despite the few overgrown paths, changes to shapes of open areas, and a couple changed shelters and playgrounds, the map was quite adequate for the event.

orienteering 13:27 [5] *** 1.9 km (7:05 / km)

road running 47:00 [3] 4.5 mi (10:27 / mi)
weight:165lbs

Dropped off van at the auto shop then took an easy run home. Finally found the small nail that was causing an intermittent slow leak in one tire. ... Only when that side of the tire happened to be directly down. Oil change, high beam headlight, and airbag sensor.

Fairly constant pace with miles of 10:29, 10:33, 10:28, 10:20.

bicycling - road 14:30 [3] 3.9 mi (3:43 / mi)
shoes: Bontrager Touring

Home to auto repair shop to pick up van. Visited the self serve car wash on the way home and washed off quite a few kilos of Manitoba mud and sand.

Long driving day. Hudson WI - Oxford OH. Manitoba trip total distance 3600 miles.

orienteering race 2:08:00 [4]

Long course at Westeen Canadian O Champs on Hog's Back map. What a contrast to yesterday. Very sloppy race with loops, spirals, and random walks (ha ha) at almost every control.

In spite of that, good enough to pull off a second place finish but I was very dis-satisfied at how often I lost contact and how badly I blew bearings and interpretation of contours and vegetation. Granted, the pouring rain did not help matters, and definitely interfered with my vision (wet glasses), but that is no excuse for such a terribly sloppy race.

Saturday Aug 3, 2013 #

orienteering race 40:30 [5] ***** 4.1 km (9:53 / km)
10c shoes: Icebug 2012

Middle Distance race at Hog's Back, Spruce Woods Provincial Park, Manitoba. First place.

A little hesitant keeping contact on the first control. A little bit right on the long leg to the second one, but corrected with minimal loss of perhaps 10 seconds or less. Saw lots of people wandering aimlessly, but managed to keep excellent contact for the rest of the race. Lost 30 seconds or so on one in a reentrant when I came in a little too low, thought I could see the top of the reentrant and turned down to look behind big trees with no success. Ran back up over the top of the reentrant and found that it really leveled then continued just a bit farther and there was the bag. Grrr.

But seriously, I could not have asked for a much cleaner race in such technical terrain. Everything was clicking just right.
