ICO 2 hour night score O at Eagle Creek (east side). Got 22 of 24 controls for 668 of 697 possible points, good enough for 3rd place. Mattias cleared the course in about 1:30.

A decent race. A couple mistakes due to tiredness, and a good decision to skip 7 point number 20. The 5.5 minutes or so that I had left might have been good enough to get 22 point number 5, but it would have been very close, and any bobble could easily have put me overtime and cost me my highest 50 point control. As it turned out, getting 5 would not have moved me any higher, but blowing it would certainly have knocked me off the podium. Not that ICO had a real podium, of course.

Alex and Jordan teamed up for the 2 hour version, while Skyler soloed on the 1 hour.

Flagging control sites at Hueston Woods for next couple weeks of practices. A few minor map updates. I hate it when the mountain bikers block off a perfectly good connecting trail. I guess they are afraid somebody might shortcut in a race. Temporary race day flagging would be just as effective. Bah...

walking 40:00 [1]

Setting up compass exercise on school grounds. Got drenched by a brief but heavy rain shower. Of course, it was the rare day that I did not have an extra change of clothes in the car.

O' club today we worked mainly on compass skills. Had a featureless map (blank paper) with a very short (250-280 m or so) course of 6 controls. The first 3 or so legs were 25 to 35 meters; later legs increased to 50+ meters. Controls were a number (utility marking paint) on the grass - visible when you got close, but not from very far away. Pretty much an open field, but a couple of the tougher courses had to go through (or around) a copse of trees and shrubs.

attendance: 16 from the middle school, plus Jamie, Alex and Nathan from the high school.

NAOC Long. Same thick woods, same rough footing, but a lot more opportunities to run trails. Even though trail routes were sometimes much longer, they were safer and faster.

Pretty clean run except for the cataclysmic mistake of mispunching control 1. And didn't realize until after I finished. Enough said.

Finger still aches, ankle still hurts a little. Unintentionally startled Matej with a loud yelp when I jammed the ankle with a hard landing. (sorry, dude).

NAOC Middle Distance. Subtle contours, rough uneven footing, generally medium to low visibility through the woods. Mostly pretty clean, but one real bomb that I had to attack the control 3 times, which cost me 4 to 5 minutes. Felt like forever.

Did a superman on an ankle high wire fence going to number 3, OUCH!, then had to spend another 10 or 15 seconds extracting my leg from the fence (again felt like forever).

Crossing a beaver dam on the 10-11 leg, I looked across the pond at the guy (not The Guy :-) who was taking pictures from a knoll on the far side, smiled for the camera, and promptly did another face plant, jamming a finger in the process. It was numb for quite a while but is beginning to feel better now. Further along the same leg, I did a really fine roll of my left ankle, which left me thrashing on the ground. Had to take things pretty gingerly for a ways, but managed to pick it up a bit for the last few controls.

Walking in the middle / long model area. Probably would have elected not to do this at all, and just rest the ankle, but runner99, starlight, and bugaboospire all wanted to get in some more practice, so I just did an easy walk, mostly on trail, while they went out for some more serious training. Interesting area with very abundant wildlife, and I was moving slowly enough to enjoy the birds, squirrels, and chipmunks, in a really beautiful piece of forest.
