Morehead State University Campus. Wanted to get started today but by the time I got down there, didn't have much daylight left, then had to go on to Carter Caves to meet up with Vladimir Zherdev who is finishing up the map there. Put in a little over an hour in the field and got off to a good start.

Audubon Christmas bird count INMO - Michaela Farm / Oldenburg (Indiana). Mostly auto birding but short walks along parts of the Whitewater River and Canal, and about an hour walking through the Tall Oaks area. Highlights included 2 bald eagles (one a first year immature) and 5 purple finch.

Morehead State Univ. A preliminary walk thru of the area, got a good feel for issues and potential for courses. Some areas will be a challenge to map well, because of multi level passageways, but if they can be unambiguously represented on the map, this campus should provide for a very interesting and challenging sprint.

England Idlewild. Red course designed by Addison Bosley. Good course, although I wasted several minutes looking for a slightly misplaced control that many other people saw from a distance as they approached the area. Splits show about 4 minutes lost on that control.

Rentschler. Scouting control locations and did a few minor map updates. Spent about 2.5 hours total but don't feel the few map notes were worth that much time, so I am logging an hour as just walking and only an hour of mapping.

Green course at Camp Belzer. Two counter clockwise loops of the camp. Overall a fairly easy course, although about as tough as can be done in Belzer. Only one major bobble which probably cost about 2 minutes. Starting the leg, I must have crossed one fork of the stream without thinking about it and ran up the wrong branch. Fortunately, about the right distance up the stream was a control from the second loop, and realizing it wasn't the right feature, I checked the code. My control 16 not 6 ?!?!. Couldn't believe I had followed the wrong fork, but recovery was quick and easy over the spur. Starting the second loop, the route choices were seeming pretty familiar, and my legs decided they didn't have enough left to keep running up the hills. Anyway, not the best run either physically or navigationally. Mintore edged me out by 9 seconds - there were several places I should have been able to make up that.

Streamering controls for Union County O training this afternoon - yellow course at Miami Western.

orienteering 31:11 [4] ** 3.5 km (8:55 / km)

Orange course at Miami Western, dropping packets of 5 cm by 7 cm brightly colored paper (cardstock) at each "control". The kids began starting 2 minutes after me at 1 minute intervals. Each one had to pick up one of the paper scraps at each control.

Meanwhile, the less experienced kids started on the yellow course, and had to write down a code letter from each bright pink streamer tape that I had placed earlier at the yellow controls.

Yellow: Nate (38:13), Matt, Riley, Nick, Andrew.
Orange: Alex (43:14), Noah M, Luke, Nathan, Jamie, Eric, Noah P, Brady

Thanks to Tracy Pavey for helping with starts and timing.
