North country orienteering
Total solar eclipse rogaine -6hr
Pleasant lake state forest

NCO planned this rogaine for a Monday in a park in the path of totality. They said they were hoping for 10 participants and got 36! Half hour allowed for planning, and a staggered start. Everyone would be racing during the 2 hours of eclipse including the 3 minutes of totality.

Planned a clockwise route with a decision point about 2/3 in, but didn’t have enough time to really figure out distances so it was just a guess. started with what I assume most people saved for their end game, so was pretty alone from the start. Got distracted thinking about how nice it was and overshot the fourth control. By 1.5 hours in it was clear I was moving too slowly to clear, and I also realized my end options were terrible. I decided to cut a loop of four pretty early on, largely because I had just crossed a sketchy beaver dam and didnt feel like crossing it again. I chose a new decision point and continued on my way.

When I got to that decision point, 51, I was still a little behind time to do the whole loop, but well ahead of my original end point, so I did some quick math and decided to cut another loop of 5 and try to finish the rest farther north. I got to experience totality just after control 50, on top of a wooded hill. The clouds had rolled in (literally just for the 20 minutes of totality), but it was still a dramatic change in lighting very quickly, to nearly pitch black except for a ring of360 degree light at the horizon. Very very cool. I took a moment (3 minutes, actually) to just soak it in and enjoy the experience while I waited for the light to come back, and it came back just as quickly as it had disappeared.

The northern loop was my first time on a real trail all day,a nd it went much quicker than my guesstimate, so I re-evaluated a couple end game options. I ended up just adding one 40 pointer back in. I probably had time for another 60+70, but it would have made it a long slog back to the finish, and since I was far from clearing it I couldnt muster up the motivation, so i just turned back and finished it out a little early.

Overall really happy with how the race went. Im nursing a slight knee injury, and I was really worried about making it worse doing a 6 hour race (because I absolutely destroyed it doing a 12 hour race a few years ago and it took months of rehab). I decided just to walk, which I think was the right choice, but In these woods, with almost no trails, I'm honestly not sure I could have moved that much faster anyway. My nav was good except for 2 flags where I lost a few minutes each, and a couple bad route choices. Im figuring out food again, and fueled probably as good or better as I ever had. Gage has re-introduced me to a bunch of kid snacks that are great race food - belvitas, cheese sticks, applesauce pouches, fruit snacks. I think i was trying to be too adult in the past.

Ended up coming in 5th out of 24. Not too shabby. And got to experience a total solar eclipse while doing my favorite activity. Surreal.
